L'originalité du système repose sur l'utilisation d'une membrane échangeuse d'anions et sur l'utilisation d'un combustible liquide autre que le méthanol. Le travail réalisé concerne donc l'étude de faisabilité d'une telle pile en associant des études fondamentales et des travaux plus technologiques. Divers paramètres de fonctionnement sont étudiés lors du fonctionnement d'une pile à combustible éthylène glycol/air et borohydrure de sodium / air. L'étude de la réaction de réduction de l'oxygène est réalisée en milieu alcalin sur différents catalyseurs. Il en ressort que les alliages à base de platine ne sont pas tolérants à la présence d'éthylène glycol. Par contre, les nanoparticules d'argent dispersées sur carbone et le macrocycle CoTMPP sont totalement insensibles à l'éthylène glycol. Malgré une activité inférieure, ces catalyseurs sont plus adaptés que le platine à une pile à combustible alcaline à électrolyte polymère échangeur d'anions.
