Book excerpt: Ce travail porte sur la synthèse et la caractérisation de revêtements nanostructurés à base de nitrures de titane et de zirconium obtenus par évaporation par arc électrique sous basse pression. Cette technique et les phénomènes qui lui sont rattachés sont décrits dans un premier chapitre. Après les descriptions du dispositif expérimental et de quelques techniques d'analyses, nous présentons l'élaboration et la caractérisation de revêtements de nitrures de titane et de zirconium enrichis en bore puis de revêtements de nitrures de titane enrichis en cuivre. Les couches nanostructurées Zr(Ti)-N-B/BN dures (50 GPa), exhibent des composantes polaires d'énergies de surface faible (6,5 mJ.m[exposant]-2) et une excellente imperméabilité associée à une forte inertie chimique vis à vis de l'aluminium fondu. L'étude de revêtements TiN/Cu vise à apporter une contribution à l'explication de l'existence d'une augmentation substantielle de dureté des films minces composites céramiques-métal "mou".

Book excerpt: Les traitements superficiels de nitruration et de carburation des alliages de titane permettent une augmentation de la durée de vie des matériaux travaillant en conditions d'usure et d'érosion.L'utilisation d'un laser continu de forte puissance (5 kW) a conduit à la réalisation de tels revêtements par traitements en atmosphère réactive (nitruration par diffusion d'azote) ou par apport de matière solide (carburation par graphitisation ou injection de poudres). L'obtention de structures caractéristiques est liée aux forts gradients de concentration et de température mis en jeu lors de l'interaction.L'apport de matière peut être réalisé avec ou sans passage par l'état liquide. La présence d'un bain de fusion au cours du traitement se traduit par une microstructure dendritique de la zone fondue, révélatrice d'une surfusion de constitution au refroidissement. Le plasma créé à la surface de l'échantillon varie dans sa forme et sa composition avec les paramètres d'essai. Ces variations peuvent être reliées à un changement dans les structures obtenues.La diffusion assistée par Laser consiste à faire agir le substrat à l'état solide avec une atmosphère réactive. L'étude de la couche de nitruration obtenue révèle une variation rapide de la teneur en azote dans l'échantillon. Des mesures quantitatives de la concentration en élément diffusant ainsi que des essais de dosage isotopique ont permis d'approcher un mécanisme de croissance de la couche.Le traitement superficiel de l'alliage TA6V par Laser permet donc d'obtenir des revêtements de nitrure de titane par diffusion d'azote à l'état solide et de carbure de titane par dilution de carbone dans le substrat fondu ; l'adhérence et la compacité des couches améliorent le comportement de pièces mécaniques vis-à-vis de l'érosion et du frottement.

Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
