Chez l'enfant, la denture apparaît en constante évolution. Les périodes d'éruption dentaires sont nombreuses. L'échantillon de l'étude Milord comprend 1945 enfants âgés de 4 à 12 ans, sélectionnés parmi 22 écoles du Puy-de-Dôme et répartis en classe d'âge. 11 investigateurs ont recensé sur cette population d'enfants la présence de la dent, temporaire ou permanente, sur l'arcade dentaire, et la présence d'un contact inter-arcade. Nous abservons qu'à l'âge de 10 et 11 ans, les enfants ont tous la dent 46. 87,7% des enfants de 10 ans présentent la dent 46 en contact avec la dent antagoniste et 89,1% des enfants de 11 ans. Il existe un décalage important entre l'âge d'éruption de la dent et l'âge d'apparition d'un contact inter-arcade, qui coïnciderait avec le temps nécessaire à la dent pour parfaire sa mise en fonction. De nombreuses études se sont penchées sur la détermination de l'âge d'éruption dentaire, mais peu d'entre elles se sont intéressées à la mise en fonction de la dent, c'est-à-dire la mise en contact d'une dent mandibulaire avec au moins une dent antagoniste. Le but de notre étude est de décrire l'âge d'éruption dentaire et l'âge de mise en fonction des dents permanentes dans une population d'enfants français.

Book excerpt: Les données administratives et dentaires ont été collectées à partir des dossiers des patients. Une radiographie panoramique était observée au négatoscope pour noter la formule dentaire de l'enfant ainsi que les germes présents. Des critères d'inclusion et d'exclusion ont été déterminés ; ainsi, sur 10.138 dossiers examinés, 5.848 ont été retenus pour l'exploitation des résultats. Les données ont été notées sur une fiche de saisie avant d'être enregistrées avec le logiciel SPSS 10.0 pour Windows. Résultats : L'analyse de ces données nous a permis d'étudier à la fois d'ordre d'exfoliation des dents temporaires mais, également, l'ordre d'éruption des dents permanentes. Les résultats ont été exprimés sous forme de tableau ensuite convertis, dans un souci de clarté, en histogrammes, chacun représentant, à un âge donné en années, le pourcentage des différentes dents présentes sur les arcades. La synthèse des histogrammes relatifs aux dents temporaires et de ceux relatifs aux dents permanentes nous a permis de déterminer la formule dentaire à chaque maxillaire aux différents âges étudiés. Nous avons comparé nos résultats à ceux référencés dans la littérature. L'âge d'exfoliation des dents temporaires et l'âge d'éruption des dents permanentes différaient peu des résultats obtenus précédemment dans la littérature.
