Book Harnessing Solar Heat

Download or read book Harnessing Solar Heat written by Brian Norton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems engineered by man to harness solar heat in a controlled manner now include a diverse range of technologies each serving distinctive needs in particular climate contexts. This text covers the breadth of solar energy technologies for the conversion of solar energy to provide heat, either as the directly-used output or as an intermediary to other uses such as power generation or cooling. It is a wholly updated, extended and revised version of “Solar Energy Thermal Technology” first published in 1992. The text draws on the own author’s research and that of numerous colleagues and collaborators at Cranfield University, University of Ulster, Dublin Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and University of Nigeria. The initial chapters deal with relevant fundamental aspects of solar energy meteorology, radiative heat transfer, material properties and energy storage. Solar energy collectors are discussed in detail before a set of chapters deal with each of the full range of applications. The early chapters consider: the solar energy resource, its distribution in geographical, spectral, skyward geometrical and temporal domains; the physics of solar energy absorption, transmission and loss at surfaces; and techniques for storing collected solar energy. Specific collector sub-systems are then discussed in chapters seven to nine. For each system, practical issues are discussed and a proven analytical procedure for predicting performance described. Similarly analyses are presented in the concluding chapters on solar energy systems. These range from dryers to greenhouses to systems that render buildings solar energy systems in themselves and the associated design issues. The context for any use of solar energy is the prevailing climate. This text, being global in scope, definates the most appropriate regions for particular technologies and applications. It is a research-orientated academic work citing publications on the peer-reviewed literature covering engineering and applied science topics intended both for student use, as a reference tool for teaching solar energy and for those researching solar thermal applications in universities, industry or national/commercial laboratories. Insight into the challenges of implementation including practical constraints and operational considerations are provided to aid those undertaking feasibility studies, technical assistance, training assignments or operating testing facilities.

Book Refrigeration

Download or read book Refrigeration written by Mikkel E. Larsen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refrigeration is the process of removing heat from an enclosed space, or from a substance, and moving it to a place where it is unobjectionable. The primary purpose of refrigeration is lowering the temperature of the enclosed space or substance and then maintaining that lower temperature. This book reviews research on refrigeration including an overview of up-to-date developments and technology in the field of magnetic refrigeration at room temperature (RTMR); an alternative approach based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to determine thermodynamic properties of refrigerants; solar powered sorption refrigeration and air conditioning; the modelling of chilling and freezing processes and others.

Book Models of Thermochemical Heat Storage

Download or read book Models of Thermochemical Heat Storage written by Christoph Lehmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermochemical gas-solid reactions, as well as adsorption processes, are currently of significant interest for the design of heat storage systems. This book provides detailed models of these reactions and processes that account for heat and mass transport, chemical and physical reactions, and possible local thermal non-equilibrium. The underlying scientific theory behind the models is explained, laboratory tests are simulated, and methods for high-performance computing are discussed. Applications ranging from seasonal domestic heat storage to diurnally operating systems in concentrating solar power facilities are considered in these models, which are not available through any other sources. Finally, an outlook on future developments highlights emerging technologies.

Book A History of Refrigeration Throughout the World

Download or read book A History of Refrigeration Throughout the World written by Roger Thévenot and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The evolution, trends, and applications of the mechanical aspects of refrigeration are traced from 1755 to the present day. The information is intended to appeal not only to engineering students and refrigerationists, but to the general reader as well. The history is divided into 4 epochs. The first, before 1875, discusses natural refrigeration, thermometry, the development of the concepts of heat and thermal processes, and the 4 families of refrigerating machines. The second epoch, 1875-1914, covers the industrialization of refrigeration and its first applications to brewing, food preservation, storage and transport, and non-food applications such as air conditioning and cryogenics. The third epoch, between the wars, introduces the compressor, refrigeration in daily life, and further developments in established areas. The final epoch, after 1945, documents the explosion of refrigeration technology, its spread throughout the world, and its thousands of uses, from desalination of sea water tofreeze-dried foodstuffs and medical applications.

Book Unified Signal Theory

Download or read book Unified Signal Theory written by Gianfranco Cariolaro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-23 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unified Signal Theory is an indispensible textbook dealing with the theory of deterministic signals; a topic of fundamental interest to graduates and senior undergraduates in the areas of information engineering (telecommunications, control, systems theory and electronics), astronomy, oceanography, earth science, biology and medicine. The unified theory follows an innovative approach – that of combining all signal classes into just one. The fundamental signal operations (convolution, Fourier transform, linear systems, sampling and interpolation) are established simultaneously for all the signal classes. This unified approach avoids the repetition of similar concepts consequent on other approaches’ separate treatment of definitions and properties for each signal class. Modern wavelet ideas are developed in harmony with the rest of the text. Unified Signal Theory provides: • exercises and examples, to give the student practice; • solutions which are available for download and save the tutor time; and • a choice of two suggested reading paths depending on the level of the student, for an enhanced learning experience. The advantages of the unified approach are many: it permits a global vision of the topic, it is economical in teaching and learning, and it can be adjusted easily to fit new applications. This textbook presents the theory in five chapters, and goes on to demonstrate specific applications such as fast Fourier transform implementation, sampling and reconstructions of signals, and multicolor modulation systems, in a further six chapters. Mathematical concepts are introduced conceptually within the body of the book with more rigorous treatment being reserved for the appendices.
