Les spectres Raman de N2H4 et N2D4 cristallins ont été enregistrés à diverses températures entre - 70° C et - 195° C. Les dédoublements des fondamentales, le grand nombre de modes de réseau observés et la non-coïncidence probable des fréquences Raman et infrarouges sont en désaccord avec les structures cristallines obtenues par diffraction des rayons X et des neutrons. Les résultats infrarouges et Raman suggèrent une structure à quatre molécules dans des positions générales (sites de symétrie C1) , d'une maille monoclinique de symétrie C2h. Les quatre liaisons N-H de l'hydrazine ne seraient pas équivalentes dans le cristal; les molécules seraient déformées, mais rien ne nous permet de favoriser une conformation plutôt qu'une autre. La possibilité de coexistence d'isomères de structure, comme dans le cas de N2F4 ne peut être écartée définitivement, quoi qu'elle semble assez improbable. Spectres de vibration de N2H5HC2O4 et de N2D5DC2O4 à l'état cristallin. On a étudié les spectres infrarouges et Raman de N2H5HC2O4 et de N2D5DC2O4 cristallins à température ambiante et à la température de l'azote liquide. Un spectre Raman en lumière polarisée d'un monocristal de N2H5HC2O4 nous a permis de déterminer la symétrie de ses vibrations actives en Raman. Les spectres de vibration de N2H5HC2O4 à l'état cristallin confirment les résultats obtenus par les méthodes de diffraction, à l'effet que ce sel est composé d'ions N2H5+ et HC2O4- . La plupart des vibrations fondamentales de chacun des deux types d'ions ont pu être repérées. Le nombre de bandes observées en Raman et en infrarouge, et la non-coïncidence de leurs fréquences, sont en accord à la fois avec la symétrie de chacun des ions dans le cristal et le caractère centrosymétrique de la maille primitive (C2h) qui contient deux molécules. Cependant, nos résultats indiquent que le couplage entre les vibrations identiques des différents ions est, en général, relativement faible. La région des spectres où apparaissent les bandes dues aux vibrations de valence N-H est passablement dense et reflète bien la grande variété de liaisons hydrogène dans le réseau cristallin. D'autre part, alors que les spectres du dérivé deutérié, a température ambiante, sont compatibles avec la structure cristalline proposée pour le composé hydrogéné, ceux à basse température ne le sont pas. Nos résultats suggèrent, pour N2D5DC2O4 une transition cristalline lente, possiblement reliée à une réorientation progressive des ions dans le cristal. Il serait intéressant d'étudier ce changement de phase par diffraction des neutrons. Spectres de vibration de N2H6SO4 cristallin On a enregistré les spectres Raman et infrarouge du sulfate d'hydrazonium à l'état cristallin à 30° C et à - 190° C. Un spectre Raman en lumière polarisée d'un monocristal de N2H6SO4 complète cette étude. Nos spectres sont en accord avec les résultats obtenus par les méthodes de diffraction, en autant qu'ils indiquent sans ambiguïté la présence dans le cristal d'ions déformés. Nos résultats ne reflètent cependant pas le nombre important d'unités de réseau contenues dans la maille élémentaire, la raison étant que les ions semblables sont isolés les uns des autres dans le solide .

Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed.
