Le système phonologique du jeune enfant se construit progressivement sur la base de ses expériences en perception et en production. Une évaluation précoce semble indispensable pour limiter les conséquences des éventuelles difficultés phonologiques sur les acquisitions ultérieures de l’enfant. En clinique, on constate parfois des difficultés dans la production des consonnes finales chez le jeune enfant, dès 3 ans. Néanmoins, les orthophonistes manquent de repères développementaux et d’outils d’évaluation spécifiques concernant la production des consonnes finales. L’objectif de ce mémoire est d’une part de fournir des repères développementaux sur la production des consonnes finales chez les enfants francophones de 3 ans, et d’autre part d’établir un outil d’évaluation exploitable en clinique, à partir du protocole expérimental utilisé. Ce protocole consiste en un échange basé sur le jeu, durant lequel l’enfant est amené à produire des items-cibles (repris du protocole de Hilaire-Debove & Kehoe, 2004). Nous avons dans un premier temps enregistré 30 enfants francophones tout-venant âgés de 3 ans à 3 ans et un mois. Nous avons ensuite enregistré un enfant pris en charge en orthophonie pour des difficultés phonologiques. Les résultats montrent que la majorité des consonnes finales produites par les enfants tout-venant de 3 ans sont conformes aux productions de l’adulte. On observe un effet du type de consonnes sur les productions des enfants. L’analyse des productions de l’enfant pris en charge en orthophonie révèle un décalage d’acquisition au regard des normes établies à partir de l’échantillon, et permet de démontrer l’utilité clinique du protocole. Il serait intéressant que l’outil d’évaluation proposé puisse par la suite être étalonné et devenir un outil standardisé.

Book excerpt: Although speech-language pathologists are expected to be able to administer and interpret oral examinations, there are currently no screening tests available that provide careful administration instructions and data for intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)
