Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exploration of the planets is the modem counterpart to the exploration voy ages of old. To reach the new world Columbus had to secure funding from Queen Isabella, outfit his three ships and set sail on a long journey. To explore the Amer ican Pacific Northwest, Lewis and Clark had a similar task of obtaining funding, purchasing equipment and going to points unknown, even though their path was across land and not sea. Today our journey is through space, rather than across land or sea, but we still travel with ships, now spaceworthy craft, rather than seaworthy. Our spacecraft are smaller than the ships of yore, crammed with electronics rather than provisions because man cannot go along on these journeys. We now rely on robots to be our eyes and ears at these distant worlds. Nevertheless, some aspects of exploration have not changed over the centuries. People are still fascinated by these unknown worlds and desire to explore them, and the process of obtaining the large sums of public moneys to finance these journeys still requires much pleading with authorities.

Download or read book Mod lisation exp rimentale de l atmosph re de Titan written by Patrice Coll and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOUS AVONS CONCU ET DEVELOPPE UN PROGRAMME EXPERIMENTAL SIMULANT LA CHIMIE DE L'ATMOSPHERE DE TITAN, EN TENANT COMPTE DES INADEQUATIONS DES SIMULATIONS REALISEES JUSQU'ALORS AVEC LES CONDITIONS ENVIRONNEMENTALES DE TITAN. LE DEVELOPPEMENT DE CETTE EXPERIENCE CONSTITUE LA PLUS GRANDE PARTIE DE CE TRAVAIL. LA CHIMIE AINSI SIMULEE PRESENTE DEUX ASPECTS : PHASE GAZEUSE ET PHASE SOLIDE (AEROSOLS). PARMI LES COMPOSES GAZEUX (44 HYDROCARBURES ET 24 COMPOSES AZOTES), C#6H#2, HC#5N ET C#4N#2 SONT INSTABLES A TEMPERATURE AMBIANTE. LA DETECTION DE C#4N#2, SEUL COMPOSE IDENTIFIE SUR TITAN MAIS JAMAIS AUPARAVANT DANS LES EXPERIENCES DE SIMULATION, VALIDE L'ENSEMBLE DE NOTRE PROGRAMME EN DEMONTRANT SA REPRESENTATIVITE DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT DE TITAN. CES RESULTATS SONT ENSUITE EXTRAPOLES A L'ATMOSPHERE DE TITAN GRACE A UN MODELE SIMPLE. DES ANALOGUES D'AEROSOL (THOLINS), PROTEGES DE TOUTE CONTAMINATION, SONT EGALEMENT SYNTHETISES LORS DES SIMULATIONS. LEUR RAPPORT EN NOMBRE D'ATOMES C/N VAUT 2,82 ET LE RAPPORT C/H 0,8. LA MICROSCOPIE ELECTRONIQUE REVELE QU'ILS SONT FORMES DE CHAPELETS DE SPHERES, CHACUNE DE DIAMETRE D'ENVIRON 0,3 M. NOUS AVONS ETABLI QUE LA FORMATION DES AEROSOLS EST UN PUITS IMPORTANT POUR L'AZOTE SUR TITAN, COMPARABLE AU TAUX DE PRODUCTION D'HCN. L'ETUDE DE CES THOLINS CONFIRME LEUR INSOLUBILITE MINIME DANS LES HYDROCARBURES, CONSTITUANTS ATTENDUS DES LACS DE TITAN. CE DEPOT DES AEROSOLS A LA SURFACE NE CONDUIT DONC PAS A DE NOUVEAUX PROCESSUS CHIMIQUES. PAR CONTRE LEUR SOLUBILITE DANS LES NITRILES (QUELQUES MG.ML#-#1) SUGGERE UNE RELATIVE FACILITE POUR LES NITRILES A CONDENSER SUR CES AEROSOLS. CECI A DES IMPLICATIONS SUR LES PROFILS ATMOSPHERIQUES DES ESPECES NITRILIQUES, AINSI QUE SUR LES PROPRIETES DE SURFACE DES AEROSOLS. LES ANALYSES STRUCTURELLES NOUS ONT CONDUIT A EMETTRE L'HYPOTHESE D'UNE BASE DU TYPE POLY-HCN, SUR LAQUELLE DOIVENT SE JOINDRE D'AUTRES ESPECES (HYDROCARBURES EN C#2 ET LEURS POLYMERES, PROPANE ET ACETONITRILE PRINCIPALEMENT).

Book Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment written by Simon Parsons and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suitability of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for pollutant degradation was recognised in the early 1970s and much research and development work has been undertaken to commercialise some of these processes. AOPs have shown great potential in treating pollutants at both low and high concentrations and have found applications as diverse as ground water treatment, municipal wastewater sludge destruction and VOCs control. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment is an overview of the advanced oxidation processes currently used or proposed for the remediation of water, wastewater, odours and sludge. The book contains two opening chapters which present introductions to advanced oxidation processes and a background to UV photolysis, seven chapters focusing on individual advanced oxidation processes and, finally, three chapters concentrating on selected applications of advanced oxidation processes. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment will be invaluable to readers interested in water and wastewater treatment processes, including professionals and suppliers, as well as students and academics studying in this area. Dr Simon Parsons is a Senior Lecturer in Water Sciences at Cranfield University with ten years' experience of industrial and academic research and development.

Book Scientific Babel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael D. Gordin
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-04-13
  • ISBN : 022600032X
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Scientific Babel written by Michael D. Gordin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English is the language of science today. No matter which languages you know, if you want your work seen, studied, and cited, you need to publish in English. But that hasn’t always been the case. Though there was a time when Latin dominated the field, for centuries science has been a polyglot enterprise, conducted in a number of languages whose importance waxed and waned over time—until the rise of English in the twentieth century. So how did we get from there to here? How did French, German, Latin, Russian, and even Esperanto give way to English? And what can we reconstruct of the experience of doing science in the polyglot past? With Scientific Babel, Michael D. Gordin resurrects that lost world, in part through an ingenious mechanism: the pages of his highly readable narrative account teem with footnotes—not offering background information, but presenting quoted material in its original language. The result is stunning: as we read about the rise and fall of languages, driven by politics, war, economics, and institutions, we actually see it happen in the ever-changing web of multilingual examples. The history of science, and of English as its dominant language, comes to life, and brings with it a new understanding not only of the frictions generated by a scientific community that spoke in many often mutually unintelligible voices, but also of the possibilities of the polyglot, and the losses that the dominance of English entails. Few historians of science write as well as Gordin, and Scientific Babel reveals his incredible command of the literature, language, and intellectual essence of science past and present. No reader who takes this linguistic journey with him will be disappointed.

Book Minerals as Advanced Materials II

Download or read book Minerals as Advanced Materials II written by S V Krivovichev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers that are devoted to various aspects of interactions between mineralogy and material sciences. It will include reviews, perspective papers and original research papers on mineral nanostructures, biomineralization, micro- and nanoporous mineral phases as functional materials, physical and optical properties of minerals, etc. Many important materials that dominate modern technological development were known to mineralogists for hundreds of years, though their properties were not fully recognized. Mineralogy, on the other hand, needs new impacts for the further development in the line of modern scientific achievements such as bio- and nanotechnologies as well as by the understanding of a deep role that information plays in the formation of natural structures and definition of natural processes. It is the idea of this series of books to provide an arena for interdisciplinary discussion on minerals as advanced materials.

  • ISBN : 0520942604
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book Alien Ocean written by Stefan Helmreich and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alien Ocean immerses readers in worlds being newly explored by marine biologists, worlds usually out of sight and reach: the deep sea, the microscopic realm, and oceans beyond national boundaries. Working alongside scientists at sea and in labs in Monterey Bay, Hawai'i, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the Sargasso Sea and at undersea volcanoes in the eastern Pacific, Stefan Helmreich charts how revolutions in genomics, bioinformatics, and remote sensing have pressed marine biologists to see the sea as animated by its smallest inhabitants: marine microbes. Thriving in astonishingly extreme conditions, such microbes have become key figures in scientific and public debates about the origin of life, climate change, biotechnology, and even the possibility of life on other worlds.
