Book Eton College Lists 1678 1790 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eton College Lists 1678 1790 Classic Reprint written by R. An. Austen Leigh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton College Lists, 1678-1790 MY object in publishing the present volume is to supplement as far as possible the records of the School previous to 1791, when the School Lists first began to be printed. Before that date, in the absence of any printed record, it has been hitherto almost impossible to say whether any particular boy was at Eton or not, and it is my hope that the lists here printed with the accompany ing index may to some extent remove this difficulty. The present volume contains lists for the following years, viz.: 1678, 1698 (printed in Appendix 1706, 1707, 1718, 1725, 1728, 1732, 1742, 1745, 1747, 1753, 1754 and 1756 - 1790. 'i should not have presumed to print so incomplete a collection, had I any expectation that by a longer delay I might be able to discover an appreciable number of the missing lists. But taking into consideration the fact that Etonians have been collecting these ms. Lists for some seventy years, and moreover that during the last four years I have done all in my power, both by circulars to Old Etonians and by public advertisements, to discover further lists, I think it better to publish at once those in existence than to defer publication indefinitely. For it is, I fear, hardly probable that a complete set of lists even for the first half of the 18th century will ever be brought together, though I am not without hope that this volume, by exciting interest in the subject, may lead to further discoveries. Book The English School Volumes I and II

Download or read book The English School Volumes I and II written by Malcolm Seaborne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain has a rich heritage of school buildings dating from the later Middle Ages to the present day. While some of these schools have attracted the attention of architectural historians, they have not previously been considered from the educational viewpoint. Even schools of little or no architectural interest are important sociologically, since the changing architecture of schools reflects changing ideas about how children should be educated and organized for teaching purposes. Documentary material relating to education is often fragmentary, and buildings may thus constitute the only real source of knowledge about the development of particular schools and can also throw light on general educational history. Originally published in 1971 and 1977, these books are, therefore, not only a major contribution to architectural history but also a study in the development of educational ideas and practices from the fourteenth to the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the adventurous life of the stylish and scandalous Elizabeth Chudleigh, Duchess of Kingston—a woman whose infamous trial was bigger news in British society than the American War of Independence. “Bridgerton fans take note: For sheer incident and drama, Chudleigh’s story rivals any episode of the popular Regency-era Netflix series. And it’s all true” (The Washington Post). As maid of honor to the Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Chudleigh enjoyed a luxurious life in the inner circle of the Hanoverian court. With her extraordinary style and engaging wit, she both delighted and scandalized the press and public. She would later even inspire William Thackeray when he was writing his classic Vanity Fair, providing the inspiration for the alluring social climber Becky Sharp. But Elizabeth’s real story is more complex and surprising than anything out of fiction. A clandestine, candlelit wedding to the young heir to an earldom, a second marriage to a duke, a lust for diamonds, and an electrifying appearance at a masquerade ball in a gossamer dress—it’s no wonder that Elizabeth’s eventual trial was a sensation. Charged with bigamy, an accusation she vehemently fought against, Elizabeth refused to submit to public humiliation and retire quietly. “A superb, gripping, decadent, colorful biography that brings an extraordinary woman and a whole world blazingly to life” (Simon Sebag Montefiore, New York Times bestselling author), The Duchess Countess is perfect for fans of Bridgerton, Women of Means, and The Crown.
