Book excerpt: This book explores the importance, and construction, of ethnic identity among college students, and how ethnicity interfaces with students’ interactions on campus, and the communities in which they live. Based on qualitative interviews with White, Latina/o, African American and Asian students, it captures both the college context and the individual experiences students have with their ethnicity, through the immediacy of the students’ own voices.The authors observe how students negotiate their ethnic identity within the process of becoming adults. They identify the influences of family, the importance of socio-historical forces that surround students’ educational experiences, and the critical role of peers in students’ ethnic identity development. While research has begun to document the positive outcomes associated with diverse learning environments, this study emphasizes and more closely delineates, just how these outcomes come to be. In addition, the study reveals how the freedom to express and develop ethnic identity, which multicultural environments ideally support, promotes student confidence and achievement in ways which students themselves can articulate. This work is distinctive in eschewing an ethnic minority perspective through which Whites are the primary reference group, and the standard from which all ethnic and racial identity processes evolve; as well as in considering the influences that growing up in a multi-ethnic context may have on ethnic identity processes, particularly where the “other” is not White. This perspective is particularly important at a time when students entering universities are more likely to come from highly segregated high school environments, and will confront ethnic and social differences for the first time in college.This book is intended as a resource for researchers and practitioners in psychology and higher education. It offers insights for student affairs and higher education administrators and leaders about the ways in which their campus policies and practices can positively influence the development of more supportive campus climates that draw on the strengths of each ethnic group to create an overarching pluralistic culture. It can also serve as a cultural diversity text for upper division or graduate courses on pluralism. Moreover, understanding students’ ethnic identity, their personal growth, and adjustment to college, it is central to preparing individuals for life in a pluralistic society.

Book excerpt: Much of the past studies on Asian international students in U.S. institutions have focused on issues of adjustment or acculturation, and its implications for therapy. These studies have contributed significantly in understanding factors that account for their adjustment to a new culture. However, past studies have focused on these issues with little consideration for the variability within Asian international students. The current study focused on one of the factors that contribute to such variability; Third Culture Kids (TCK). According to Pollock & Van Reken (2001), TCKs are "A person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the culture, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCKs life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background" (p.19). This exploratory quantitative study compared levels of ethnic identity of TCK international students of Asian descent and that of Asian international students who do not have extensive experience of living overseas. In investigating the ethnic identity between these two groups, it was hypothesized that TCK international students would have lower level of ethnic identity. The study hoped to introduce and gain a better understanding of the TCKs, and identify possible implications of the results for psychotherapy. Participants included male and female international students of Asian descent enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the U.S. Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) by Phinney (1992) was used to measure the level of ethnic identity of participants. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to investigate the hypothesis that traditional international students would have stronger ethnic identity compared to international students who are TCKs. In doing so, number of months lived overseas during adolescence were the independent variable, and ethnic identity was the dependent variable. Homesickness and Contentment Scale (HC) was used to assess emotional and psychological adjustment of all participants. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to investigate how ethnic identity affects emotional and psychological adjustment, along with other factors that may affect adjustment.While there appeared to be some linear relationship between months lived overseas and ethnic identity, results of statistical analysis suggested no significant differences in ethnic identity between the two groups studied. Results were similar for the second hypothesis that examined the relationship between ethnic identity and adjustment. Financial status and gender were entered into hierarchical regression analysis as variables, but neither of these variables were significant factors.Implications of the study for multicultural therapy, as well as suggestions for future study are discussed.

Book excerpt: Multiracial individuals are a sizable and growing population, and yet there is a dearth of research focusing exclusively on their distinct experiences, especially pertaining to pervasive social exclusion (i.e., racial discrimination) and cultural belonging. Given that multiracial individuals may experience racial discrimination from U.S. ethnic/racial minority groups and Whites, how they cope is an important area of inquiry. Whereas ethnic/racial identity (ERI) has often been found to psychologically mitigate the negative impact of racial discrimination on well-being among racial/ethnic minorities, fewer studies have examined this association among multiracial individuals. The current study investigates whether ERI moderates the association between racial discrimination and mental/behavioral health outcomes, and whether this association varies by multiracial individuals' self-identified ethnic/racial group affiliation (as multiracial, monoracial minority, White, or nonracial). Secondary analyses were conducted from a nationally-representative dataset that included multiracial college students (n = 696) of diverse racial backgrounds. ERI was conceptualized as ethnic identity affirmation and belonging, and its impact with racial discrimination on depression, generalized anxiety symptoms, social anxiety symptoms, self-esteem, binge drinking, and risky sexual behavior were assessed. Regressions and multivariate analyses were conducted (i.e., ANCOVAS, MANCOVAS, and hierarchical regressions) to test associations among predictors and outcomes, and to examine the interaction of ERI x racial discrimination x ethnic/racial self-identification. Only one significant, 3-way interaction of small magnitude for social anxiety was detected. For students identifying as multiracial, racial discrimination predicted social anxiety at high levels of ERI, whereas for students identifying as White, racial discrimination predicted social anxiety at low levels of ERI. For students identifying as monoracial minority, main effects of racial discrimination on anxiety and depression symptoms were found, as was a significant, positive association of ERI with self-esteem and a significant, negative association of ERI with social anxiety. For students identifying as multiracial, ERI was significantly and positively associated with self-esteem, and significantly and negatively associated with social anxiety. Although little evidence for the buffering effect was found, results suggest that ERI may be a useful construct for multiracial individuals. Future research on multiracial individuals should continue to investigate the bearing of ERI on experiences of social exclusion.

Topics of interest may include identity development, worldviews and belief systems, parenting styles, interventions for promoting resilience and persistence and strategies for enhancing more accurate diagnostic and treatment modalities. Today’s world is comprised of multiple and intersecting communities that remain in need of psychological models and interventions that support and promote both individual and collective mental health. We believe that utilizing unidimensional conceptual models (e.g. focusing solely on race-ethnicity or gender) no longer adequately addresses psychological concerns that are dynamic, complex and multi-faceted. The proposed Handbook will focus on timely topics which historically have been under-addressed for a number of diverse populations.

In particular, the associations between minoritized students' ethnic identity, college-level support and social and academic adjustment in these institutions were explored. The study confirmed the developmental significance of Phinney's achieved ethnic identity for college Students of Color regardless of institutional context. Support from both ethnically and not ethnically affiliated sources was consequential for minoritized students' college adjustment. The study also affirmed the importance of general social support from peers and faculty over and above ethnic identity for minoritized students' social and academic adjustment. Contrary to predictions, no differences in regression paths for ethnically and not ethnically affiliated sources of support were found between two institutional contexts. The study extends Phinney's theory of ethnic identity development to the study of college adjustment and offers practical implications on predictors of minoritized student college adjustment.
