Book Brokered Homeland

Download or read book Brokered Homeland written by Joshua Hotaka Roth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with an aging workforce, Japanese firms are hiring foreign workers in ever-increasing numbers. In 1990 Japan's government began encouraging the migration of Nikkeijin (overseas Japanese) who are presumed to assimilate more easily than are foreign nationals without a Japanese connection. More than 250,000 Nikkeijin, mainly from Brazil, now work in Japan. The interactions between Nikkeijin and natives, says Joshua Hotaka Roth, play a significant role in the emergence of an increasingly multicultural Japan. He uses the experiences of Japanese Brazilians in Japan to illuminate the racial, cultural, linguistic, and other criteria groups use to distinguish themselves from one another. Roth's analysis is enriched by on-site observations at festivals, in factories, and in community centers, as well as by interviews with workers, managers, employment brokers, and government officials.Considered both "essentially Japanese" and "foreign," nikkeijin benefit from preferential immigration policy, yet face economic and political strictures that marginalize them socially and deny them membership in local communities. Although the literature on immigration tends to blame native blue-collar workers for tense relations with migrants, Roth makes a compelling case for a more complex definition of the relationships among class, nativism, and foreign labor. Brokered Homeland is enlivened by Roth's own experience: in Japan, he came to think of himself as nikkeijin, rather than as Japanese-American.

Book Transforming Ethnic and Race Based Traumatic Stress with Yoga

Download or read book Transforming Ethnic and Race Based Traumatic Stress with Yoga written by Gail Parker and published by Singing Dragon. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the foundations of Restorative Yoga for Ethnic and Race-Based Stress and Trauma by Gail Parker, this workbook offers a range of self-care practices that strengthen the psychological immune system, increase resilience, and support post-traumatic growth. Ethnic and race-based traumatic stress is a worldwide phenomenon. Regardless of race and ethnicity we are all impacted by its damaging effects, from those who are wounded to those who do the wounding. We are witnessing health care disparities based on race and ethnicity that are causing great suffering, and also witnessing a global awakening to the pandemic of racial violence and its pernicious effects on all of us. Transforming Ethnic and Race-Based Traumatic Stress with Yoga is a self-care study guide where each chapter includes a reading for contemplation on an area of ethnic and/or race related traumatic stress, an illustration of a Restorative Yoga pose with instructions on how to get into it and accompanied by positive affirmations to repeat while in the pose. This is followed by a therapeutic journal writing instruction with blank pages for journal entries to reinforce the affirmations and to identify the psychological, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of the posture presented.

Book Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema written by Joanne Bernardi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema provides a timely and expansive overview of Japanese cinema today, through cutting-edge scholarship that reflects the hybridity of approaches defining the field. The volume’s twenty-one chapters represent work by authors with diverse backgrounds and expertise, recasting traditional questions of authorship, genre, and industry in broad conceptual frameworks such as gender, media theory, archive studies, and neoliberalism. The volume is divided into four parts, each representing an emergent area of inquiry: "Decentring Classical Cinema" "Questions of Industry" "Intermedia as an Approach" "The Object Life of Film" This is the first anthology of Japanese cinema scholarship to span the temporal framework of 200 years, from the vibrant magic lantern culture of the nineteenth century, through to the formation of the film industry in the twentieth century, and culminating in cinema’s migration to gaming, surveillance video, and other new media platforms of the twenty-first century. This handbook will prove a useful resource to students and scholars of Japanese studies, film studies, and cultural studies more broadly.
