Book Ethical Judgments of Business Students

Download or read book Ethical Judgments of Business Students written by Michael Huston Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any unethical decision can have a negative impact on a company's productivity, profits, stock price, employee morale, and public image. Ever since business ethics began garnering public attention via the scandals of the 1970s, the principal response for remedying the situation has been to turn to educators. Recently, an increasing number of studies, articles and interviews have focused on ethical attitudes, behavior and the factors (i.e., age, gender, major) that contribute to individual differences in ethical beliefs and judgments. Little research, however, has been conducted examining the effects of factors affecting the ethical judgment of students attending Christian colleges. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist across age, gender, academic major, and religiosity as relates to ethical judgment of business students attending a Christian liberal arts university. Survey data of 280 students was collected from a Christian university located in West Tennessee. The student's responses to six ethical scenarios were measured via Reidenbach and Robin's (1990) Multidimensional Ethics Scale (MES). Subjects were also asked to complete Gorsuch and McPherson's (1989) Intrinsic/Extrinsic-Revised (I/E-R) scaled comprised of 14 items designed to measure religiosity. No significant differences were found in ethical judgments based on gender and major but a scenario effects was observed suggesting that moral intensity plays a significant role with regard to ethical intent. The significant results of this study suggest that older students are more ethical than younger students. Furthermore, significant results suggest that the more intrinsically religious a student is, the more ethical they seem to be.

Book Managing Business Ethics

Download or read book Managing Business Ethics written by Alfred A. Marcus and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Business Ethics: Making Ethical Decisions teaches students how to navigate ethical issues they will encounter using the weight-of-reasons approach applied throughout the book. This decision-making framework’s goal is not to faithfully apply particular philosophical perspectives on what is right, but rather to solve ethical problems. The authors underscore the need for employees at all levels to carefully consider the ethical implications of their actions using this approach and it can be applied at the individual, organizational, and stakeholder levels. Chapters provide a case to walk through application of the framework and mini-cases allow students to practice applying this framework on their own. A wide range of real-world case studies are presented, featuring companies such as Facebook, Google, Wells Fargo, Volkswagen, and Amazon. This practical, down-to-earth text also delves into topics not covered extensively by other books such as slow and fast thinking, the inherent conflict between the individual and organization, conformity, and the difficulties of speaking truth to power. Students are offered ample opportunity to engage in thoughtful reflection, discussion, and application as they grapple with ethical issues big and small. Included with this title: The password-protected Instructor Resource Site (formally known as SAGE Edge) offers access to all text-specific resources, including a test bank and editable, chapter-specific PowerPoint® slides.

Book Attitudes toward Business Ethics

Download or read book Attitudes toward Business Ethics written by Michael Sauerbrey and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1,0, Aarhus School of Business (Marketing und Statistik), language: English, abstract: Business is essential for the development and well-being of a society. However, business does not exist in a vacuum, but is simultaneously dependent on a number of stakeholders, be it employees, customers, investors, interest groups, or the government. In this sense, an extensive and critical debate about the role and conduct of business, and their associated corporate responsibilities in the community, is taking place among academics and practitioners alike. Thereby, it is essential to consider that the practices of corporations are first and foremost resulting from decisions and behaviors of human beings. Business students in their role as future managers are likely to be faced with critical ethical decisions in their daily work routine. Thus, investigating their moral mindset about aspects of business ethics is of great importance. Therefore, the purpose of this master thesis was first of all to critically reflect the academic literature, and present a theoretical framework that addresses valuable concepts with regard to the good life and the just social coexistence of business and society. In a second step, a comprehensive empirical research was conducted, which studied the attitudes toward aspects of business ethics among 1.271 business students in Denmark, Germany, and the United States, using a self-report online questionnaire. Participants evaluated a wide range of questions regarding the moral dimensions underlying the relation of business and society. They were furthermore asked to specify primary and social corporate responsibilities, to define a well-run company, and to state personal criteria that are relevant for them in a notional job offer situation. Gathered data were analyzed on differences among nationalities, as well as on distinctions within the three countries in terms of gender, academic level, age, and business ethics education. Findings revealed optimistic and critical effects alike. Attitudes differed significantly among the three countries in a high number of aspects. Females showed stronger ethical attitudes than males. The impact of a business ethics course was positive, but varied in intensiveness among the three countries. Similarly, undergraduate and graduate students signified differing effects that intensified with age. In general, business students indicated their importance for social factors, and responsible corporate behavior. However, they prioritized career aspects over social criteria ... Book Approaches to Learning and Ethical Judgment of Business Ethics Students

Download or read book Approaches to Learning and Ethical Judgment of Business Ethics Students written by Zaza Eliza binti Mohd. Redza and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is threefold. The first and second objectives are to explore the approaches to learning the Business Ethics course adopted by students and to examine the relationship between learning approaches and academic performance in respect of the Business Ethics course. The third objective is to examine the factors that affect the ethical judgment of the students. A questionnaire survey was administered to 209 students taking a Business Ethics course in a higher learning institution in Malaysia. The Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) was used to assess the learning approaches adopted by students, whilst the study used the Business Ethics Final Examination result to measure the academic performance of the students. Ethical vignettes obtained from Emerson and Conroy (2004) were used to capture how students evaluate the ethical behaviour depicted in the vignettes. For the first objective, the results indicate that the majority of students, both male and female groups, prefer to use a deep approach in studying Business Ethics and there is no significant difference in the approaches to learning adopted between male and female groups. For the second objective, the findings reveal that there were significant positive relationships between the deep and strategic approaches and the final examination, while a significant negative relationship was found between the surface approach and the final examination result. For the third objective, it was found that Business Ethics result and year of study were factors that have a significant effect on the ethical judgment of students. In terms of theoretical implications, this study contributes to the literature on approaches to learning by using ASSIST, as, to date, not many studies use ASSIST to measure the approaches of students to learning. In terms of practical implications, this study may provide guidance to educators to adopt effective teaching strategies to improve student learning by encouraging the right approaches to learning in order to improve the academic performance of students. This study may also assist accounting practitioners and future employers in recruiting prospective employees, as factors, such as Business Ethics result and year of study have a significant impact on the ethical judgment of students. Employers may want to emphasis these two factors in the process of hiring future employees to ensure that the employees they employ have an appropriate level of moral reasoning and ethical behaviour.

Book Making Moral Judgments

Download or read book Making Moral Judgments written by Donelson Forsyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating new book examines diversity in moral judgements, drawing on recent work in social, personality, and evolutionary psychology, reviewing the factors that influence the moral judgments people make. Why do reasonable people so often disagree when drawing distinctions between what is morally right and wrong? Even when individuals agree in their moral pronouncements, they may employ different standards, different comparative processes, or entirely disparate criteria in their judgments. Examining the sources of this variety, the author expertly explores morality using ethics position theory, alongside other theoretical perspectives in moral psychology, and shows how it can relate to contemporary social issues from abortion to premarital sex to human rights. Also featuring a chapter on applied contexts, using the theory of ethics positions to gain insights into the moral choices and actions of individuals, groups, and organizations in educational, research, political, medical, and business settings, the book offers answers that apply across individuals, communities, and cultures. Investigating the relationship between people’s personal moral philosophies and their ethical thoughts, emotions, and actions, this is fascinating reading for students and academics from psychology and philosophy and anyone interested in morality and ethics.
