Book Divine and Moral Songs for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Divine and Moral Songs for Children Classic Reprint written by Isaac Watts and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine and Moral Songs for Children My Friends, It is an awful and important charge that is committed to you. The wisdom and welfare of the succeeding generation are intrusted with you beforehand, and depend much on your conduct. The seeds of misery or happiness in this world, and that to come, are oftentimes sown very early; and, therefore, whatever may conduce to give the minds of children a relish for virtue and religion ought, in the first place, to be proposed to you. Verse was at first designed for the service of God, though it hath been wretchedly abused since. The ancients among the Jews and the Heathens taught their children and disciples the precepts of morality and worship in verse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Aspiration and Song I am much indebted to the pioneering labors of Dr. Stanton Coit and Miss Troup - and particularly to Miss Troup for permitting me to use several of her beautiful tunes. From all living authors of words or music printed here, I have sought permission to use their work, and wish to make grateful acknowledgments to those who have responded. Other features of Moral Aspiration and Song will 'explain themselves, and, I trust, justify themselves. If in anyway and to any one it is a reminder of higher things or a help in attaining them, I shall be amply rewarded for my pains. I wish to thank my friends, Miss Hester E. Hall and Mr. Albert Scheible, for valuable counsel in selecting the music and for practical help in preparing it for the press. Book A First Series of Church Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Series of Church Songs Classic Reprint written by Sabine Baring-Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Series of Church Songs A want has been long felt for a collection of Church songs to supplement the Hymn Book - songs with a distinctly Church and religious tendency, without being hymns. From the workshop, the kitchen, and the stable, we hear the most sacred words warbled lightly, because they have become familiar in church or chapel wedded to taking tunes. The English people, for lack of national Volkslieder such as the Germans possess, have become a hymn-singing people; and the hymn is sung regardless of the character of the words, because the people are cheerful and want to sing. Of late years Messrs. Sankey and Moody, and, later still, the Salvation Army, have introduced religious songs which have at once become favourites, because the airs have been secular, and, in some cases, the words rollicking. The result has been a distinct lowering of the reverence of the people for holy things and holy words. Sacred aspirations and names, at which angels and devils bow, are trolled out or roared to music-hall tunes, sometimes by tipsy men, and often without thought. The tendency of these songs is not only to irreverence and profanity, but also to encourage heretical views of the scheme of Salvation. Justification is upheld as a sentimental outgush of excited hysteria, not as the gradual growth of a spiritual life; and this mischievous teaching poisons the sources of the moral conscience. The language of the poetry has been freely altered, so far as was necessary to adapt the poetical to the musical cadence. Care has been taken that the feel ings of no class of christians should be offended. It was deemed inexpedient to prefix musical rules, because they will be found in the Church music books in every family where music is thought to be worthy of attention. Equally unsuccessful in his endeavour to obtain distinction as a courtier, and equally dissatisfied with the abuses and the immorality which prevailed in the royal court, no less than in the halls of justice, he ultimately directed his views to the church; a change which appears to have been the result of a mental struggle between the desire of secular advancement and objects of a higher nature; and which was obviously adopted, more from an awakened sense of the importance of divine truth, than from any hope of worldly advantage.
