Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hidden costs of artificial intelligence, from natural resources and labor to privacy and freedom What happens when artificial intelligence saturates political life and depletes the planet? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? In this book Kate Crawford reveals how this planetary network is fueling a shift toward undemocratic governance and increased inequality. Drawing on more than a decade of research, award-winning science, and technology, Crawford reveals how AI is a technology of extraction: from the energy and minerals needed to build and sustain its infrastructure, to the exploited workers behind "automated" services, to the data AI collects from us. Rather than taking a narrow focus on code and algorithms, Crawford offers us a political and a material perspective on what it takes to make artificial intelligence and where it goes wrong. While technical systems present a veneer of objectivity, they are always systems of power. This is an urgent account of what is at stake as technology companies use artificial intelligence to reshape the world.

Book excerpt: Introduction I write this book aims to let readers to feel that future artificial intelligent (AI) technology whether it could be applied to which aspects to satisfy our life need. I shall concentrate on predicting (AI) technology can be applied to these several aspects: education, business, transportation, space tourism, medical health these five aspects. This is my opinion, it is not absolute true. However, I shall follow our nowadays (AI) technological development trend to explain how I predict how (AI) technology will be invented to applied to these five aspects to satisfy consumer individual and businessman individual both needs, even I shall explain how to (AI) tool to predict consumer behavior in psychological function successfully. . However, I shall explain why (AI) manufacturers need to concern ethic matter, if they do not concern ethic or moral matter, any future (AI) industry development will be encountered failure. So, I bring this two questions: (1) Why do ethic or moral matter is important to influence any (AI) industry development success? (2) What will be caused negative influence to (AI) consumer comsumption desire if any (AI) manufacturers do not concern (AI) ethic or moral matter? First part, I shall explain how and why (AI) technology can be applied to space exploration missions and space tourism development. Will artificial intelligent space exploration bring long term economic, entertainment and technological benefits? What factors will apply (AI) technology to assist space tourism leisure development? How to apply (AI) technology to solve any challenges during space travelling boats fly to space to encounter sudden accident. This part concerns whether artificial intelligent technology can be used in future space development. Firstly, I shall explain how human can apply artificial intelligent technology to space development which aspects. Then, I shall indicate how scientists need to follow what steps in order to achieve (AI) space robotic technology can be used in space technology to develop more successful. In this part, I shall also explain what benefits or strengths that (AI) space robotic technology can bring to assist space development as well as what disadvantages or weaknesses if (AI) space robotic technology can not be used to assist space development. I shall conclude whether (AI) space robotic technology will be real one tool which can assist space development, when human chooses to adapt to work and live and space tourism entertainment activities with (AI) space robots together in our future (AI) space robotic technological societies. Second part, I shall explain how future (AI) technology can be applied to business and health service aspect. The research questions: Can AI grow productivity? If AI can grow productivity, how can it raise ? If productivity raised, can it raise economic development ? How will (AI) influence human job change? Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology is for the progress in critical areas, such as health, education, energy, economy inclusion, social welfare and the environment. Thus, it brings this question: Which (AI) workers be instead of traditional human workers in these different new markets? In recent years, machines had been used to be human's tasks in the performance of certain tasks related to intelligence, such as aspects of image recognition. Experts also forecast that rapid progress in the field of specialized artificial intelligence will continue. Then, it also brings this question: Does (AI) exceed that of human performance on more and more tasks? If it is truth, will some of human jobs to be disappeared? (AI) will be instead of human some simple jobs, then unemployment rate to the low skillful and low educated workers will be increased.

Book The Ethics of AI and Robotics

Download or read book The Ethics of AI and Robotics written by Soraj Hongladarom and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence is the most discussed and arguably the most powerful technology in the world today. The very rapid development of the technology, and its power to change the world, and perhaps even ourselves, calls for a serious and systematic thinking about its ethical and social implications, as well as how its development should be directed. The present book offers a new perspective on how such a direction should take place, based on insights obtained from the age-old tradition of Buddhist teaching. The book argues that any kind of ethical guidelines for AI and robotics must combine two kinds of excellence together, namely the technical and the ethical. The machine needs to aspire toward the status of ethical perfection, whose idea was laid out in detail by the Buddha more than two millennia ago. It is this standard of ethical perfection, called “machine enlightenment,” that gives us a view toward how an effective ethical guideline should be made. This ideal is characterized by the realization that all things are interdependent, and by the commitment to alleviate all beings from suffering, in other words by two of the quintessential Buddhist values. The book thus contributes to a concern for a norm for ethical guidelines for AI that is both practical and cross-cultural.

Download or read book AI Ethics written by Mark Coeckelbergh and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of the ethical issues raised by artificial intelligence moves beyond hype and nightmare scenarios to address concrete questions—offering a compelling, necessary read for our ChatGPT era. Artificial intelligence powers Google’s search engine, enables Facebook to target advertising, and allows Alexa and Siri to do their jobs. AI is also behind self-driving cars, predictive policing, and autonomous weapons that can kill without human intervention. These and other AI applications raise complex ethical issues that are the subject of ongoing debate. This volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series offers an accessible synthesis of these issues. Written by a philosopher of technology, AI Ethics goes beyond the usual hype and nightmare scenarios to address concrete questions. Mark Coeckelbergh describes influential AI narratives, ranging from Frankenstein’s monster to transhumanism and the technological singularity. He surveys relevant philosophical discussions: questions about the fundamental differences between humans and machines and debates over the moral status of AI. He explains the technology of AI, describing different approaches and focusing on machine learning and data science. He offers an overview of important ethical issues, including privacy concerns, responsibility and the delegation of decision making, transparency, and bias as it arises at all stages of data science processes. He also considers the future of work in an AI economy. Finally, he analyzes a range of policy proposals and discusses challenges for policymakers. He argues for ethical practices that embed values in design, translate democratic values into practices and include a vision of the good life and the good society.

Book Legal and Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence from an International Law Perspective

Download or read book Legal and Ethical Challenges of Artificial Intelligence from an International Law Perspective written by Themistoklis Tzimas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the legal regulation, mainly from an international law perspective, of autonomous artificial intelligence systems, of their creations, as well as of the interaction of human and artificial intelligence. It examines critical questions regarding both the ontology of autonomous AI systems and the legal implications: what constitutes an autonomous AI system and what are its unique characteristics? How do they interact with humans? What would be the implications of combined artificial and human intelligence? It also explores potentially the most important questions: what are the implications of these developments for collective security –from both a state-centered and a human perspective, as well as for legal systems? Why is international law better positioned to make such determinations and to create a universal framework for this new type of legal personality? How can the matrix of obligations and rights of this new legal personality be construed and what would be the repercussions for the international community? In order to address these questions, the book discusses cognitive aspects embedded in the framework of law, offering insights based on both de lege lata and de lege ferenda perspectives.

Book Artificial Intelligence for a Better Future

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence for a Better Future written by Bernd Carsten Stahl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book proposes a novel approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics. AI offers many advantages: better and faster medical diagnoses, improved business processes and efficiency, and the automation of boring work. But undesirable and ethically problematic consequences are possible too: biases and discrimination, breaches of privacy and security, and societal distortions such as unemployment, economic exploitation and weakened democratic processes. There is even a prospect, ultimately, of super-intelligent machines replacing humans. The key question, then, is: how can we benefit from AI while addressing its ethical problems? This book presents an innovative answer to the question by presenting a different perspective on AI and its ethical consequences. Instead of looking at individual AI techniques, applications or ethical issues, we can understand AI as a system of ecosystems, consisting of numerous interdependent technologies, applications and stakeholders. Developing this idea, the book explores how AI ecosystems can be shaped to foster human flourishing. Drawing on rich empirical insights and detailed conceptual analysis, it suggests practical measures to ensure that AI is used to make the world a better place.

Book Investigating the Impact of AI on Ethics and Spirituality

Download or read book Investigating the Impact of AI on Ethics and Spirituality written by Chakraborty, Swati and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to appear in everything from writing, social media, and business to wartime or intelligence strategy. With so many applications in our everyday lives and in the systems that run them, many are demanding that ethical implications are considered before any one application of AI goes too far and causes irreparable damage to the personal data or operations of individuals, governments, and organizations. For instance, AI that is fed data sets that are influenced by human data collection method biases may be perpetuating societal biases with implicit bias that can create serious consequences. Applications of AI with implicit bias on recidivism prediction models as well as medical algorithms have shown biases against certain racial or ethnic groups, leading to actual discrimination in treatment by the legal system and the medical systems. Regulatory groups may identify the bias in AI but not the source of the bias, making it difficult to determine who to hold accountable. Lack of dataset and programming transparency can be problematic when AI systems are used to make significant decisions, and as AI systems become more advanced, questions arise regarding responsibility for the results of their implementation and the regulation thereof. Research on how these applications of AI are affecting interpersonal and societal relationships is important for informing much-needed regulatory policies. Investigating the Impact of AI on Ethics and Spirituality focuses on the spiritual implications of AI and its increasing presence in society. As AI technology advances, it raises fundamental questions about our spiritual relationship with technology. This study emphasizes the need to examine the ethical considerations of AI through a spiritual lens and to consider how spiritual principles can inform its development and use. This book covers topics such as data collection, ethical issues, and AI and is ideal for educators, teacher trainees, policymakers, academicians, researchers, curriculum developers, higher-level students, social activists, and government officials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technological advancements have deeply transformed society and the way people interact with each other. Instantaneous communication platforms have allowed connections with other people, forming global communities, and creating unprecedented opportunities in many sectors, making access to online resources more ubiquitous by reducing limitations imposed by geographical distance and temporal constrains. These technological developments bear ethically relevant consequences with their deployment, and legislations often lag behind such advancements. Because the appearance and deployment of these technologies happen much faster than legislative procedures, the way these technologies affect social interactions have profound ethical effects before any legislative regulation can be built, in order to prevent and mitigate those effects. Ethics in Online AI-Based Systems: Risks and Opportunities in Current Technological Trends features a series of reflections from experts in different fields on potential ethically relevant outcomes that upcoming technological advances could bring about in our society. Creating a space to explore the ethical relevance that technologies currently still under development could have constitutes an opportunity to better understand how these technologies could or should not be used in the future in order to maximize their ethically beneficial outcomes, while avoiding potential detrimental effects. Stimulating reflection and considerations with respect to the design, deployment and use of technology will help guide current and future technological advancements from an ethically informed position in order to ensure that, tomorrow, such advancements could contribute towards solving current global and social challenges that we, as a society, have today. This will not only be useful for researchers and professional engineers, but also for educators, policy makers, and ethicists. Investigates how "intelligent" technological advances might be used, how they will affect social interactions, and what ethical consequences they might have for society Identifies and reflects on questions that need to be asked before the design, deployment, and application of upcoming technological advancements, aiming to both prevent and mitigate potential risks, as well as to identify potentially ethically-beneficial opportunities Recognizes the huge potential for ethically-relevant outcomes that technological advancements have, and take proactive steps to anticipate that they be designed from an ethically-informed position Provides reflections that highlight the importance of the relationship between technology, their users and our society, thus encouraging informed design and educational and legislative approaches that take this relationship into account
