Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artist or Madman? A book that encompasses Eight years of painful writing, provides a unique insight into emotional turmoil and elation caused by this mental illness. The poems and stories cover a diverse range of genres and sub-genres in order to convey the perspectives, feelings and reflections that lie in the psyche of a bipolar survivor. The book opens with the poetic tale of a vampire romance in which the reluctant victim allows herself to be seduced but sacrifices her own life because she fears that her growing feelings of love and infatuation are unrequited. At the moment of death she realises that her fears are erroneous and in that second she is consumed. Further fantastical tales examine the sea as a possessive entity attracting those devoured by sadness, the ability to travel through time interpreted as a mental illness, protective ghostly creatures and frenzied mermaids robbing fishermen of their lives to save them from aging. Other pieces take the reader into the darkest recesses of the human mind grittily depicting addiction, neglect, isolation and death. Each poem or story invites the reader to empathise with the most passionate and devastating feelings that manifest as symptoms of bipolar. Cruel vampires, malicious murders, seductions, darkness, grief, isolation, fear, rallying, ghosts, humour, catapulting through the cosmos, reflections of nature, depression, imprisonment, suffering and devastation are just some of the themes filling the pages of this unusual collection with a long history in the making........

Download or read book Wading the Waters of My Mind written by Martine Daniel and published by Chipmunkapublishing ltd. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description'Promise me you'll never tell anyone. This can just be our little secret.' Fourteen years ago, Adam Waddoups made his father a promise - and for fourteen years, he's kept that promise, keeping to himself the secret that could so easily rip the fabric of his family apart. But keeping secrets comes at a cost for Adam, and he is tortured by the memories of the past, trapped in a cycle of guilt that regularly plunges him into episodes of depression and mania, which push him dangerously close to the edge. When Adam is diagnosed with bipolar disorder - a diagnosis which is later adjusted to the lesser known schizoaffective disorder - and referred to a psychotherapist, he is forced to confront the demons of his past - and to finally admit the truth, allowing him, at last, to shape a more positive future for himself. About the AuthorMartine Daniel was born in York in 1981. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a writer, and whilst at secondary school she would often be caught scribbling stories in the back of exercise books during lessons. Her dreams of seeing her name in print never dimmed, despite her life being turned upside down by episodes of mania, depression and psychosis during her late teens and early twenties. In 2003 the pressures of a stressful job brought on an episode of psychotic mania, which led to the breakdown that ended her hopes of a career in bookselling, following which Martine was finally forced into contact with local mental health services. With the help of medication and the support of her family, she began to pick up the pieces of her life and started work on her first novel The Fire in Your Eyes (published 2009), juggling work on the novel with her studies with The Open University. Her second novel, Legacy of Lies, the sequel to The Fire in Your Eyes, was published in April 2010. Wading the Waters of My Mind is her third novel.Martine hopes that by bringing the experience of mental illness alive in her works of fiction she can contribute to the ongoing battle to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Book Anatomy of an Epidemic

Download or read book Anatomy of an Epidemic written by Robert Whitaker and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated with bonus material, including a new foreword and afterword with new research, this New York Times bestseller is essential reading for a time when mental health is constantly in the news. In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Interwoven with Whitaker’s groundbreaking analysis of the merits of psychiatric medications are the personal stories of children and adults swept up in this epidemic. As Anatomy of an Epidemic reveals, other societies have begun to alter their use of psychiatric medications and are now reporting much improved outcomes . . . so why can’t such change happen here in the United States? Why have the results from these long-term studies—all of which point to the same startling conclusion—been kept from the public? Our nation has been hit by an epidemic of disabling mental illness, and yet, as Anatomy of an Epidemic reveals, the medical blueprints for curbing that epidemic have already been drawn up. Praise for Anatomy of an Epidemic “The timing of Robert Whitaker’s Anatomy of an Epidemic, a comprehensive and highly readable history of psychiatry in the United States, couldn’t be better.”—Salon “Anatomy of an Epidemic offers some answers, charting controversial ground with mystery-novel pacing.”—TIME “Lucid, pointed and important, Anatomy of an Epidemic should be required reading for anyone considering extended use of psychiatric medicine. Whitaker is at the height of his powers.” —Greg Critser, author of Generation Rx

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saturn and Melancholy remains an iconic text in art history, intellectual history, and the study of culture, despite being long out of print in English. Rooted in the tradition established by Aby Warburg and the Warburg Library, this book has deeply influenced understandings of the interrelations between the humanities disciplines since its first publication in English in 1964. This new edition makes the original English text available for the first time in decades. Saturn and Melancholy offers an unparalleled inquiry into the origin and development of the philosophical and medical theories on which the ancient conception of the temperaments was based and discusses their connections to astrological and religious ideas. It also traces representations of melancholy in literature and the arts up to the sixteenth century, culminating in a landmark analysis of Dürer's most famous engraving, Melencolia I. This edition features Raymond Klibansky's additional introduction and bibliographical amendments for the German edition, as well as translations of source material and 155 original illustrations. An essay on the complex publication history of this pathbreaking project - which almost did not see the light of day - covers more than eighty years, including its more recent heritage. Making new a classic book that has been out of print for over four decades, this expanded edition presents fresh insights about Saturn and Melancholy and its legacy as a precursor to modern interdisciplinary studies.
