Book Elysian Encounter

Download or read book Elysian Encounter written by G. Norman Laidlaw and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This cleverly conceived book relates Denis Diderot and Andre Gide to each other as well as to their separate centuries ... Using a binocular approach similar to the double-spotlight technique of the theater, Professor Laidlaw juxtaposes the lives, works, and philosophies of the two French writers. Constant questioning, agnosticism to the deathbed, and voluminous literary output characterize both. Their catholic interests -- in science, in poetry and drama, in Russian ways as well as French behavior -- are similar. [Laidlaw] discusses their common concern with the dilemma of morality and sincerity, their fascination with literal or figurative blindness, their attitudes toward death, their strong sense of paradox, and the delight and inspiration they both drew from foolishness"--

Book Gide s Eagles

Download or read book Gide s Eagles written by Ben Stoltzfus and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Ben Stoltzfus is a novelist, translator, literary critic and retired professor of comparative literature, French and creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. He is the recipient of Fulbright, Camargo, Humanities, and Creative Arts grants, a Gradiva award from NAAP for Lacan and Literature, and a Scholar's Library award from MLA for Gide's Eagles. An internationally recognized comparatist and interarts scholar, Stoltzfus has published books on Alain Robbe-Grillet, Georges Chenneviere, Rene Magritte, and Jasper Johns, as well as numerous essays, which have appeared in prestigious international and American journals. Andre Paul Guillaume Gide (1869 - 1951) was a French author and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947 'for his comprehensive and artistically significant writings, in which human problems and conditions have been presented with a fearless love of truth and keen psychological insight.' Gide's career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars. Known for his fiction as well as his autobiographical works, Gide exposes to public view the conflict and eventual reconciliation of the two sides of his personality, split apart by a straitlaced education and a narrow social moralism. Gide's work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the face of moralistic and puritanical constraints, and centres on his continuous effort to achieve intellectual honesty. His self-exploratory texts reflect his search of how to be fully oneself, even to the point of owning one's sexual nature, without at the same time betraying one's values. His political activity is informed by the same ethos, as indicated by his repudiation of communism after his 1936 voyage to the USSR.

Book Aaron Copland and His World

Download or read book Aaron Copland and His World written by Carol J. Oja and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron Copland and His World reassesses the legacy of one of America's best-loved composers at a pivotal moment--as his life and work shift from the realm of personal memory to that of history. This collection of seventeen essays by distinguished scholars of American music explores the stages of cultural change on which Copland's long life (1900 to 1990) unfolded: from the modernist experiments of the 1920s, through the progressive populism of the Great Depression and the urgencies of World War II, to postwar political backlash and the rise of serialism in the 1950s and the cultural turbulence of the 1960s. Continually responding to an ever-changing political and cultural panorama, Copland kept a firm focus on both his private muse and the public he served. No self-absorbed recluse, he was very much a public figure who devoted his career to building support systems to help composers function productively in America. This book critiques Copland's work in these shifting contexts. The topics include Copland's role in shaping an American school of modern dance; his relationship with Leonard Bernstein; his homosexuality, especially as influenced by the writings of André Gide; and explorations of cultural nationalism. Copland's rich correspondence with the composer and critic Arthur Berger, who helped set the parameters of Copland's reception, is published here in its entirety, edited by Wayne Shirley. The contributors include Emily Abrams, Paul Anderson, Elliott Antokoletz, Leon Botstein, Martin Brody, Elizabeth Crist, Morris Dickstein, Lynn Garafola, Melissa de Graaf, Neil Lerner, Gail Levin, Beth Levy, Vivian Perlis, Howard Pollack, and Larry Starr.
