This book was released on 1997 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prepared with the aim of integrating information about the chemistry and application of concrete superplasticizers in a manner relevant to concrete engineers and technologists. The opening chapter introduces basic aspects of concrete science as background for what follows. Chapters 2-4 discuss the chemical synthesis of superplasticizers, methods used to characterize those chemicals, and techniques for evaluation of their effect in cementitious systems. Subsequent chapters cover: the influence of superplasticizers on hydration of cement materials; rheology of cementitious systems; issues related to the mode of action and compatibility of superplasticizers; the effect of superplasticizers on fresh concrete; mechanical properties and durability of concrete; innovative applications of superplasticizers in concrete; superplasticizer dispensing, specifications, and standards; patents related to superplasticizers; and current and future trends in the use of superplasticizers in concrete.

This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the latest advances, innovations and applications presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the International Conference on Sustainable Production and Use of Cement and Concrete (ICSPCC 2019), held in Villa Clara, Cuba on June 23-30, 2019. It covers highly diverse topics, including sustainable production of low-carbon cements, novelties in the development of supplementary cementitious materials, new techniques for the microstructural characterization of construction materials, Portland-based and alkaline-activated cementitious systems, development of additives and additions in the sustainable production of concrete, sustainable production of high-performance concrete, durable concrete produced with recycled aggregates, development of mortars for historical patrimony restoration, environmental and economic assessment of the production and use of cement. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous, international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will inspire novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration between different specialists.

Book Cement and Concrete Chemistry

Download or read book Cement and Concrete Chemistry written by Wieslaw Kurdowski and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes cement clinker formation. It covers multicomponent systems, clinker phase structures and their reactions with water, hydrate composition and structure, as well as their physical properties. The mineral additions to cement are described as are their influence on cement-paste properties. Special cements are also discussed. The microstructure of concrete is then presented, and special emphasis is given to the role of the interfacial transition zone, and the corrosion processes in the light of cement-phase composition, mineral additions and w/c ratio. The admixtures' role in modern concrete technology is described with an emphasis on superplasticizer chemistry and its cement-paste rheological modification mechanism. Cement with atypical properties, such as calcium aluminate, white, low energy and expansive cements are characterized. The last part of the book is devoted to special types of concrete such as self compacting and to reactive powders.

Book Application of Bacterial Pigments as Colorant

Download or read book Application of Bacterial Pigments as Colorant written by Wan Azlina Ahmad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental concerns regarding continuous use of synthetic dyes saw a revival in the demand for natural dyes as natural dyes exhibit better biodegradability and generally have a higher compatibility with the environment. However, one of the limitations on the use of natural dyes or pigments is the low extraction yield factors (a few grams of pigment per kg of dried raw material). Therefore, the exploitation of other biological sources such as fungi, bacteria and cell cultures offers interesting alternative. Microbial pigments such as from bacterial origins offer the advantage in terms of production compared to pigments extracted from vegetables or animals, due to its simple cell and fast culturing technique. This book offers interesting insight into initial works carried out to demonstrate the potential use of bacterial pigment as colorant for various applications.

Book Learning from Vernacular

Download or read book Learning from Vernacular written by Pierre Frey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1964, Bernard Rudofsky curated the exhibition Architecture Without Architects at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, thereby drawing the attention of the postwar Western public to traditional architectures, rescuing them from the ignominy to which they had been consigned by the 'national' ideologies of Europe in the 1930s. In the early 1980s, Ivan Illich published a number of radical critiques of modernity in which he drew attention to 'vernacular' values, proposing a trenchant but hospitable definition of this term. It derives from Roman law, in which everything produced within the household for consumption within the household and not for sale or exchange is vernacular. In order to locate this proposition within the field of architectural criticism, this book borrows with ironic intent part of the title of Robert Venturi's celebrated work, Learning from Las Vegas (1977), which launched the fashion for post-modernism in architecture. Taking advantage of a collection of maquettes of vernacular architecture (the only one of its kind in the world), whose special attributes he highlights and whose value he underlines, the author selects contemporary realisations by architects from Africa, Asia, America and Europe that seem to him to constitute a 'new vernacular architecture'. The emphasis here is on materials available on the fringes of the market, on the safeguarding and development of traditional know-how, on the social role of the architect and on the teaching of architecture.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavements are easy to maintain, quick to construct, and provide a safe, smooth, quiet ride. Simply put, asphalt pavements provide the greatest level of drivability at the most economical price. Asphalt pavement refers to any paved road surfaced with asphalt. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil. Asphalt cement is heated aggregate, combined, and mixed with the aggregate at an HMA facility. Asphalt is America's most recycled material. Reclaimed asphalt is not just reusable as a "black rock" the asphalt cement in the reclaimed pavement is reactivated to become an integral part of the new pavement.
