Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I'm going to camp out on the land ... try and get my soul free'. So sang Joni Mitchell in 1970 on 'Woodstock'. But Woodstock is only the tip of the iceberg. Popular music festivals are one of the strikingly successful and enduring features of seasonal popular cultural consumption for young people and older generations of enthusiasts. From pop and rock to folk, jazz and techno, under stars and canvas, dancing in the streets and in the mud, the pleasures and politics of the carnival since the 1950s are discussed in this innovative and richly-illustrated collection. The Pop Festival brings scholarship in cultural studies, media studies, musicology, sociology, and history together in one volume to explore the music festival as a key event in the cultural landscape - and one of major interest to young people as festival-goers themselves and as students.

Book Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar

Download or read book Origin and Transformation of the Ancient Israelite Festival Calendar written by Jan A. Wagenaar and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focusses on the origin and transformation of the priestly festival calendar. Since the epoch-making work of Julius Wellhausen at the end of the 19th century the differences between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars have often been explained in terms of a gradual evolution, which shows an increasing historicisation, denaturalisation and ritualisation. The festivals were in Wellhausen's view gradually detached from agricultural conditions and celebrated more and more at fixed points in the year. This study tries to show that the changes in the priestly festival calendar reflect a conscious effort to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the semi-annual layout of the Babylonian festival year. The ramifications of the change only come to the fore after a careful study of the agricultural conditions of ancient Israel - and Mesopotamia - makes clear that passover and the festival of unleavened bread were originally celebrated in the second month of the year. The first month of the year envisaged by the priestly festival calendar for the celebration of passover and the festival of unleavened bread in turn mirrors the date of one of the two semi-annual Babylonian New Year festivals. The two Babylonian New Year festivals were celebrated exactly six months apart at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. In order to adapt the ancient Israelite festival calendar to the Babylonian scheme with two New Year festivals a year, the date of passover and the festival of unleavened bread had to be moved up by one month. The consequences for the origin of passover, the festival of unleavened bread, the festival of weeks and the festival of huts are charted and the relations between the various ancient Israelite festival calendars are determined anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905, the president of the Portland Street Fair and Carnival Association, E.W. Rowe, presented the idea of an annual festival to Portland mayor Harry Lane. From that idea came the first Rose Festival, called the Rose Carnival and Fiesta, held June 20-22, 1907. It was hailed as a huge success. "There is no reason in the world why Portland should not hold a rose festival every year," remarked the Oregonian on June 21. "Everyone will be happier and better all the rest of the year for the festival of roses." And indeed, that has been the case. From just a three-day event, the Rose Festival has expanded over the years to include many activities covering several months every spring and summer.

Book Akhenatens Sed Festival At Karna

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992 as part of the Studies in Egyptology Series. This study looks at the depiction of the Sed-festival on blocks of the Temple at Karnak. According to some studies, Pharaoh Amenhotep IV recorded details of a Sed-festival event in his new temple complex dedicated to the Aten at Karnak. Blocks from the temple buildings which were re-used after the death of Amenhotep IV, were examined and photographed by the Akhenaten Temple Project between 1966 and 1977 in an attempt to analyse, with the aid of the computer, scenes carved on the blocks known as the Akhenaten 'talatat'.

Book Tonic to the Nation Making English Music in the Festival of Britain

Download or read book Tonic to the Nation Making English Music in the Festival of Britain written by Nathaniel G. Lew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long remembered chiefly for its modernist exhibitions on the South Bank in London, the 1951 Festival of Britain also showcased British artistic creativity in all its forms. In Tonic to the Nation, Nathaniel G. Lew tells the story of the English classical music and opera composed and revived for the Festival, and explores how these long-overlooked components of the Festival helped define English music in the post-war period. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, Lew looks closely at the work of the newly chartered Arts Council of Great Britain, for whom the Festival of Britain provided the first chance to assert its authority over British culture. The Arts Council devised many musical programs for the Festival, including commissions of new concert works, a vast London Season of almost 200 concerts highlighting seven centuries of English musical creativity, and several schemes to commission and perform new operas. These projects were not merely directed at bringing audiences to hear new and old national music, but to share broader goals of framing the national repertory, negotiating between the conflicting demands of conservative and progressive tastes, and using music to forge new national definitions in a changed post-war world.

This book was released on 2019-02-18T00:00:00-05:00 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every February, tens of thousands from all over the globe flock to St. Boniface, Manitoba, to attend the largest winter celebration in Western Canada—Festival du Voyageur. For its duration, these visitors can experience the customs and ways of our voyageur ancestors, the hardy men and women who settled the prairies after the arrival of La Vérendrye in 1734. In 1969, the Franco-Manitoban community laid the groundwork for a new winter festival inspired by the historic voyageur era. It also introduced the ambassadors of the endeavour—the Offi cial Voyageurs, based on notable historical fi gures such as Jean-Baptiste Lagimodière and his wife Marie-Anne Gaboury, the fi rst pioneers of the Red River Settlement and the grandparents of Louis Riel. Thanks to its experienced team and thousands of volunteers, Festival du Voyageur has since its inception provided a space in which to gather and celebrate the history of the voyageurs and the fur trade, by way of the First Nations, the Métis, and the early days of the Red River Settlement. Festivalgoers are invited to visit striking snow sculptures, skate on the Red River, enjoy traditional foods, take part in a host of contests and competitions, learn legends and lore from kitchen party and folk music performances, and mingle at the various trading posts. This fond retrospective, spearheaded by Lucienne Beaudry Loiselle and brought to fruition under her careful and dedicated guidance, offers a candid and faithful account of Festival’s many successes and challenges over its fifty-year history of warming hearts and cold prairie winters.

Book Research Methodology of the International Festival

Download or read book Research Methodology of the International Festival written by Josipa Mijoč and published by J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek Faculty of Economics in Osijek. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Wilson et al. (2017), festivals are events held at a particular point in time, repeated in a regular manner and open to the public. Festivals differ from special events as they occur on a regular basis, whereas ‘a special event is a onetime or infrequently occurring event outside the normal range/program or activities of the sponsoring or organising body’ (Getz 1997). Although festival types and themes may differ, they have some characteristics in common. For instance, regardless of the theme of a festival, all of themhave similar stakeholders, i.e. organisations, audiences, exhibitors, sponsors (financiers), media, etc. Despite growing research interest in festivals, little attention has been put on simultaneous exploration of the key stakeholders of a festival. The research and methodological focus of this scientific book is the analysis of the EU- China Literary Festival, which is conceived as the interaction of European and Chinese authors with the Chinese audience, and the promotion of European culture in Chinese metropolises. The goal of the Festival is to bring distant cultures closer by means of literature as a medium. This book focuses on the analysis of the four festivals organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China, the EU-China International Literary Festival. The Festival has been held twice a year in China since 2017. The audience could follow the Festival-related events at the venue (n = 1,623) or online (n = 56,621). Online visitors have outnumbered visitors who attended physical events, which strongly popularised European-Chinese cooperation, literature and authors through all levels of communication. The aim of this scientific book is to present the process of developing a research methodology and establishing assumptions for its wider application. The research methodology measures the views of three stakeholder groups involved in the EU-China International Literary Festival (n = 73), i.e. 1) Festival visitors, 2) European authors (international participants), and 3) Chinese authors (domestic participants). In addition, the book explores how successfully the EU-China International Literary Festival has achieved its goal, mission and vision (the exchange of ideas and interaction between authors and audiences, or dedication to cultural diversity of China and Europe), and whether it is possible to successfully measure Festival satisfaction in relation to all groups of respondents. Comparison and identification of similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents is one of the research goals. This scientific book contributes to the field by increasing the number of tested research instruments that are adequate for determining the attitudes and satisfaction of Festival stakeholders. Additionally, research contribution is reflected in harmonisation of the methodology used in festival research and in identifying both common and specific dimensions depending on the creative industry sector promoted by the festival in focus (for instance, literary, communication, film, and other festivals in particular creative industry sectors). Analysing the research results, statistically significant differences in the expectations and satisfaction with the Festival segments were determined with regard to the role of the respondent examined. Greater satisfaction was reported by the authors (panel participants), and a lower level of satisfaction was observed among visitors to the Festival. Based on a large number of media releases and live streamings, the Festival can be seen as a highly successful promotional product where the culture in the European Union was presented to Chinese visitors. The tested research methodology for researching international festivals can be used by future researchers of festival phenomena for developing an instrument for measuring success of a festival from a multiple stakeholder perspective. The efforts of this research study are ultimately aimed at a systematic increase in the quality of festivals, ensuring continued funding, and laying the groundwork for related festivals funded by the EU Delegation to China.

Download or read book Research Study on Festival and Events written by Josipa Mijoč and published by Andizet - Institute for Scientific and Art Research in Creative Industry . This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three successful research studies and three scientific books, the EU-China International Literary Festival international project team focused on testing and applying the international festival research methodology. Based on previous research studies, reports and scientific books, the authors had sufficient knowledge of the methodological guidelines for conducting demanding multilingual and cross-cultural research. The research and methodological definition of the scientific book is the EU-China literary festival conceived as the interaction of European and Chinese authors with Chinese audiences and the promotion of European culture in Chinese cities. This book focuses on the analysis of the 4th EU-China International Literary Festival organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China. The goal of the Festival is to bring distant cultures closer by virtue of literature as a medium, and the Festival has been held twice a year in China since 2017. The audience could attend Festival events either at the venue (n = 6,914) or online (n = 377,098). The number of online attendees far exceeded the number of visitors who attended live events, which strongly popularised EU-China cooperation, cross-cultural differences, new media monitoring literary events, literature itself and the authors. The research methodology was used to measure the views of three groups of stakeholders in the EU-China International Literary Festival (n = 70), i.e. 1. Festival visitors, 2. European authors (international participants), and 3. Chinese authors (national participants). By analysing the views of the three groups of respondents, the book analyses the measure of both the success of the EU-China International Literary Festival and the level of satisfaction with the Festival. Comparison and identification of similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents is one of the research goals. Based on a large number of media releases and live streamings, the Festival can be seen as a highly successful promotional product where the culture of the European Union was presented to the Chinese visitors. In addition to the research methodology, the scientific book also provides the design of research procedures applied in multilingual research by international research teams. An enviable longitudinal series of data collected from the three groups of stakeholders was created by the fourth measurement of Festival success. The tested international festival research methodology can be used by future researchers of festival phenomena for developing an instrument for gathering the views of festival participants (authors, visitors and organisers) of literary and all other related festivals. The efforts of this research study are ultimately aimed at a systematic increase in the quality of festivals, ensuring continued funding, and laying the groundwork for related festivals funded by the EU Delegation to China.

Book Apartheid s Festival

  • Author : Leslie Witz
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press

  • ISBN : 0253028310
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Apartheid s Festival written by Leslie Witz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid's Festival highlights the conflicts and debates that surrounded the 1952 celebration of the 300th anniversary of the landing of Jan Van Riebeeck and the founding of Cape Town, South Africa. Taking place at the height of the apartheid era, the festival was viewed by many as an opportunity for the government to promote its nationalist, separatist agenda in grand fashion. Leslie Witz's fine-grained examination of newspapers, brochures, pamphlets, and advertising materials reveals the expectations of the festival planners as well as how the festival was engineered, historical figures were reconstructed, and the ANC and other anti-apartheid organizations mounted opposition to it. While laying open the darker motives of the apartheid regime, Witz shows that the production of local history is part of a global process forged by the struggle between colonialism and resistance. Readers interested in South Africa, representations of nationalism, and the making of public history will find Apartheid's Festival to be an important study of a society in transition.
