Book Calculation of Electron Impact Cross Sections from Metastable States

Download or read book Calculation of Electron Impact Cross Sections from Metastable States written by M. Raymond Flannery and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-channel eikonal theoretical treatment of atomic collisions is developed with electron-metastable atom collisions in mind. The treatment is applied to electron-impact excitation of hydrogen and helium atoms in their ground state and of helium initially in its metastable level. Differential integral cross sections are calculated together with the orientation and alignment parameters. Cross sections for ionization of metastable rare-gas atoms and of metastable nitrogen and carbon monoxide molecules by collision with electrons are also calculated as a function of electron impact energy. Book Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics

Download or read book Cosmic Rays and Particle Physics written by Thomas K. Gaisser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years there has been marked growth in interest in the study of techniques of cosmic ray physics by astrophysicists and particle physicists. Cosmic radiation is important for the astrophysicist because in the farther reaches of the universe. For particle physicists, it provides the opportunity to study neutrinos and very high energy particles of galactic origin. More importantly, cosmic rays constitue the background, and in some cases possibly the signal, for the more exotic unconfirmed hypothesized particles such as monopoles and sparticles. Concentrating on the highest energy cosmic rays, this book describes where they originate, acquire energy, and interact, in accreting neutron stars, supernova remnants, in large-scale shock waves. It also describes their interactions in the atmosphere and in the earth, how they are studied in surface and very large underground detectors, and what they tell us.

Book Collision Processes and Excitation of UV Emission from Planetary Atmospheric Gases

Download or read book Collision Processes and Excitation of UV Emission from Planetary Atmospheric Gases written by SV Avakyan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the excitation and ionization of atmospheric gases has become an area of intense research. A large amount of data have been accumulated concerning the various elementary processes which occur when photons, electrons and ions collide with atoms and molecules. This scattered information has now been collected in a handbook for the first time, and the authors give a critical analysis of relevant data. This book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the available information and is distinguished by the following outstanding features: the consideration of a large number of atmospheric constituents, including H^O2, H, N^O2, N, O^O2, O, CO, CO^O2, H^O2O, HCl and some hydrocarbons the maximum number of space particles, including magnetospheric particles, are considered as projectiles: photons, electrons, hydrogen atoms, protons and helium ionsthe energy range under study corresponds to the real spectrum of cosmic fluxes, from threshold values for elementary processes up to several thousand keV the recommended values of cross sections, obtained from analysis of the available experimental data, are given in the handbook and their accuracy is estimated. These features make the handbook particularly valuable to specialists in the aeronomy of planets, comets and active perturbations, as well as to experimentalists and theoreticians working in the fields of plasma physics, atomic and molecular physics, physics of the upper atmosphere, chemical physics, optics and spectroscopy.
