Book Methods to Estimate Total Forest Biomass for Extensive Forest Inventories

Download or read book Methods to Estimate Total Forest Biomass for Extensive Forest Inventories written by Eric H. Wharton and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing literature on procedures for estimating tree biomass for northeastern tree species includes a number of research studies that are specific and localized. As a result, there is little consistency in these estimation procedures, which are largely in the form of regression equations. In addition, many species are ignored that need to be quantified when inventories of forest resources are conducted over extensive areas. This makes it difficult to determine the most appropriate biomass-estimation procedures. In this paper, an evaluation is made of prediction models and their application over the entire range of northeastern tree species. Recommendations are also made on procedures for the more nontimber oriented elements of total forest biomass-shrub biomass, foliage biomass, stump and root biomass, and biomass on unproductive forest land.

Book Pollution Assessment for Sustainable Practices in Applied Sciences and Engineering

Download or read book Pollution Assessment for Sustainable Practices in Applied Sciences and Engineering written by Abdel-Mohsen O. Mohamed and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2020-10-25 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution Assessment for Sustainable Practices in Applied Sciences and Engineering provides an integrated reference for academics and professionals working on land, air, and water pollution. The protocols discussed and the extensive number of case studies help environmental engineers to quickly identify the correct process for projects under study. The book is divided into four parts; each of the first three covers a separate environment: Geosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere. The first part covers ground assessment, contamination, geo-statistics, remote sensing, GIS, risk assessment and management, and environmental impact assessment. The second part covers atmospheric assessment topics, including the dynamics of contaminant transport, impacts of global warming, indoor and outdoor techniques and practice. The third part is dedicated to the hydrosphere including both the marine and fresh water environments. Finally, part four examines emerging issues in pollution assessment, from nanomaterials to artificial intelligence. There are a wide variety of case studies in the book to help bridge the gap between concept and practice. Environmental Engineers will benefit from the integrated approach to pollution assessment across multiple spheres. Practicing engineers and students will also benefit from the case studies, which bring the practice side by side with fundamental concepts. - Provides a comprehensive overview of pollution assessment - Covers land, underground, water and air pollution - Includes outdoor and indoor pollution assessment - Presents case studies that help bridge the gap between concepts and practice

Book Fire Climate Change and Carbon Cycling in the Boreal Forest

Download or read book Fire Climate Change and Carbon Cycling in the Boreal Forest written by Eric S. Kasischke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discussion of the direct and indirect mechanisms by which fire and climate interact to influence carbon cycling in North American boreal forests. The first section summarizes the information needed to understand and manage fires' effects on the ecology of boreal forests and its influence on global climate change issues. Following chapters discuss in detail the role of fire in the ecology of boreal forests, present data sets on fire and the distribution of carbon, and treat the use of satellite imagery in monitoring these regions as well as approaches to modeling the relevant processes.
