Book Estimates of Air Drying Times for Several Hardwoods and Softwoods

Download or read book Estimates of Air Drying Times for Several Hardwoods and Softwoods written by William Turner Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published data on estimated air drying times of lumber are of limited usefulness because they are restricted to a specific location or to the time of year the lumber is stacked for drying. At best, these estimates give a wide range of possible times over a broad range of possible locations and stacking dates. This report describes a method for estimating air drying times for specific locations by optimizing a drying simulation using existing experimental air drying times for northern red oak, sugar maple, American beech, yellow-poplar, ponderosa pine, and Douglas-fir. The results are simulation parameters that make it possible to estimate the air drying times of these species regardless of when they are stacked, in any location where average temperature and relative humidity are known, and for lumber of any thickness dried to any final moisture content. Graphs of these estimated air drying times to several final moisture contents are given for several nominal thicknesses of lumber at various locations within the growing range of the six species studied.

Book Air Drying of Lumber

Download or read book Air Drying of Lumber written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes how lumber can be air-dried most effectively under outdoor conditions and illustrates the principles and procedures of air-drying lumber that were developed through field investigations and observations of industrial practices. Particular emphasis is placed on the yarding of lumber in unit packages. Included are topics such as why lumber is dried, advantages and limitations of the drying process, properties of wood in relation to drying, layout of the drying yard, piling methods, causes and remedies of air-drying defects, and protection of air-dried lumber.

Book Using the Air drying Estimator to Predict the Air drying Time for Lumber

Download or read book Using the Air drying Estimator to Predict the Air drying Time for Lumber written by Philip H. Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "Lumber is often air dried for months prior to being kiln dried. The air drying yard manager must decide when to end air drying and move the lumber to the dry kiln. This issue of Wood Products Notes presents the Air Drying Estimator Excel spreadsheet which is based on previous air drying of lumber research."

Book Volume Loss and Grade Change of Hardwood Lumber During Air Drying Classic Reprint

Download or read book Volume Loss and Grade Change of Hardwood Lumber During Air Drying Classic Reprint written by Glenn L. Gammon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volume Loss and Grade Change of Hardwood Lumber During Air-Drying Sawmill Operators are often confronted with the task of estimating lumber output. They know the relationship of log grade and scale to product recovery, and they know the effect of a given log size on the cost of producing that lumber. But once the logs have been sawed and the green lumber stacked on the drying yard, what can they expect in terms of volume and grade when that lumber has air-dried? To answer this question, nearly 782 thousand board feet of hardwood lumber were analyzed for changes in grade and volume between the rough green and rough air-dry conditions. Percent volume of lumber recovered after drying is tabulated by lumber grade and thickness for ten species.
