Once Esther's pregnancy becomes obvious, Mrs. Barfield - a fellow Plymouth Sister, and a friend to Esther - regretfully fires Esther because, she says, she would make a poor example to the other girls.Esther returns to London, renting a room outside her family home to avoid her stepfather. Her mother dies giving birth to her eighth child at the same time as Esther finally gives birth to her own son, a healthy baby boy named Jack. Esther's younger sister comes to her during her confinement to beg for money for a trip to Australia - the family is going to emigrate.Desperate for money, Esther decides to become a wet nurse, taking a job suckling the child of a wealthy woman. The woman disallows Esther to be in contact with her own child out of fear of disease, so Esther has to place her own son in the care of a baby farmer. When Esther does visit her son, he is sickly, and Esther fears for his life. She immediately reclaims her child, ending her employment with the wealthy woman, and resigning herself to the fact that she will now have to enter a workhouse for food and shelter. She has no other choice.

There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of Émile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist.

Considered an innovator in fiction in his day, he no longer seems as important as he once did.Moore came from a distinguished Catholic family of Irish landholders. When he was 21, he left Ireland for Paris to become a painter. Moore's Reminiscences of the Impressionist Painters (1906) vividly described the Café Nouvelle-Athènes and the circle of Impressionist painters who frequented it. Moore was particularly friendly with Édouard Manet, who sketched three portraits of him. Another account of the years in Paris, in which he introduced the younger generation in England to his version of fin de siècle decadence, was his first autobiography, Confessions of a Young Man (1888).Deciding that he had no talent for painting, he returned to London in 1882 to write. His first novels, A Modern Lover (1883) and A Mummer's Wife (1885), introduced a new note of French Naturalism into the English scene, and he later adopted the realistic techniques of Gustave Flaubert and Honoré de Balzac. Esther Waters (1894), his best novel, deals with the plight of a servant girl who has a baby out of wedlock; it is a story of hardship and humiliation illumined by the novelist's compassion. It was an immediate success, and he followed it with works in a similar vein: Evelyn Innes (1898) and Sister Teresa (1901).
