Download or read book Blind Vigil written by John E. Rawson and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the untimely death of his parents when he is ten years old, Kenneth Mills is forced to live with his grandmother, Esther, in Osprey Cove, Maine. Esther is controlling and bitter, and she and Kenneth repulse each other. What's more, Kenneth is unbalanced; as a teenager, he attacks a fellow student with a scalpel and then spends three years in the Crestwood Insane Asylum, where he is eventually diagnosed as a psychotic schizophrenic. Following treatment, he returns to the home of his youth. As he grows to adulthood, the townspeople see him differently. They are now scared of Kenneth and fear what he might do to them. He has bizarre obsessions with younger girls and fantasizes about becoming a great surgeon, like Dr. Walters, the town's only physician. Despite Kenneth's delusions, however, his psychological state may have other causes. The people of Osprey Cove are, in fact, cruel and abnormal-but who's to say what's normal anyway? As he sinks further and further into fantasy, it is impossible for Kenneth to discern reality from dreams. In the end, the question remains: who is the real lunatic of Osprey Cove?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Newbery Honor Book and New York Times Bestseller that is historical fiction with a hint of mystery about living at Alcatraz not as a prisoner, but as a kid meeting some of the most famous criminals in our history. Al Capone Does My Shirts has become an instant classic for all kids to read! Today I moved to Alcatraz, a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water. I'm not the only kid who lives here. There are twenty-three other kids who live on the island because their dads work as guards or cooks or doctors or electricians for the prison, like my dad does. And then there are a ton of murderers, rapists, hit men, con men, stickup men, embezzlers, connivers, burglars, kidnappers and maybe even an innocent man or two, though I doubt it. The convicts we have are the kind other prisons don't want. I never knew prisons could be picky, but I guess they can. You get to Alcatraz by being the worst of the worst. Unless you're me. I came here because my mother said I had to. Book excerpt: In this heartwarming and whip-smart YA spin on The Rosie Project, a teen girl is determined to prove that love, like all things, should be scientifically quantified…right? Iris Oxtabee has managed to navigate the tricky world of unspoken social interactions by reading everything from neuroscience journals to Wikipedia articles. Science has helped her fit the puzzle pieces into an understandable whole, and she’s sure there’s nothing it can’t explain. Love, for example, is just chemistry. Her best friend Seth, however, believes love is one of life’s beautiful and chaotic mysteries, without need for explanation. Iris isn’t one to back down from a challenge; she’s determined to prove love is really nothing more than hormones and external stimuli. After all, science has allowed humanity to understand more complex mysteries than that, and Iris excels at science. The perfect way to test her theory? Get the popular and newly single Theo Grant, who doesn’t even know Iris exists, to ask her to prom. With prom just two weeks away, Iris doesn’t have any time to waste, so she turns her keen empirical talents and laser-focus attention to testing her theory. But will proving herself correct cause her friendship with Seth—and the tantalizing possibility for something more—to become the failed experiment?

Download or read book Into Abyssinia written by Carl E. Hansen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this autobiographical book, the author gives an informative and lively account of the first eight years of his and his family's living and serving in pre-revolutionary feudal Ethiopia. It is a story of adventure as a novice missionary couple learns and adapts to a vastly different culture while raising a family in the less developed hinterlands. The events take place from 1967 to 1975, a pivotal time in Ethiopia’s history; a time marked by growing discontent with feudalism and the ancient imperial regime that supported it. It was a time of growing turmoil that, in the midst of drought and famine, spilled over into an armed revolution; a time when ignorant men with guns over-powered the best minds and forced a tradition-bound society to join in a bloody experiment with radical socialism. It was a time when the slow and difficult years of missionary effort in planting the seeds of the Christian gospel began to sprout and take root and grow into what would become a mighty movement of transformation in that society.
