Book Dictionary of Spoken Spanish

Download or read book Dictionary of Spoken Spanish written by U. S. War Dept and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a complete, unabridged republication of a Dictionary of Spoken Spanish, which was specially prepared by nationally known linguists for the U.S. War Department (TM#30-900). It is compiled from spoken Spanish and emphasizes idiom and colloquial usage in both Castilian and Latin American areas. More than 16,000 entries provide exact translations of both English and Spanish sentences and phrases; as many as 60 idioms are listed under each entry. This is easily the largest list of idiomatic constructions ever published. Travelers, business people, and students who are interested in Latin American studies have found this dictionary their best source for those expressions of daily life and social activity not usually found in books. More than 18,000 idioms are given, not as isolated words that you have to conjugate or alter, but as complete sentences that you can use without change. A 25-page introduction provides a rapid survey of Spanish sounds, grammar, and syntax, with full consideration of irregular verbs. It is especially apt in its modern treatment of phrase and clause structure. A 17-page appendix gives translations of geographical names, numbers, national holidays for Spanish countries, important street signs, useful expressions of high frequency, and a unique 7-page glossary of Spanish and Spanish-American foods and dishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuban and Cuban-American Women: An Annotated Bibliography covers primary and secondary sources found in Cuba and the United States on Cuban and Cuban-American women from the period 1868 to the present. The editors have amassed primary, archival materials located in Cuba and the United States, annotated the holdings and described their locations. Secondary sources are also included and annotated. While most of the emphasis is placed on the twentieth century, significant attention is paid to women in the Wars of Independence. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, comprising Chapters 1 through 3, contains all archival and secondary sources about women in Cuba. Covering the period 1868-1997, this section is divided into the nineteenth century and Independence (1868-1898), the early Republic (1898-1958), Guerrillas and Popular Underground Resistance against Fulgencio Batista (1953-1958), and the Cuban Revolution (1959-1997). Topics in this section include law, history, feminism, health, education, social welfare, archival resources, revolutionary government, the military, political organizations, cultural events, literature, and art. Part II contains all archival and secondary sources about Cuban women in the United States. It also covers the period from 1868-1997, but the body of literature is on the post-1959 era. Topics in this section include the exile experience, family history, autobiography, labor studies, health, education, political organization, racial issues, cultural expressions, literature, and art. Cuban and Cuban-American Women contains both an Author Index and a Subject Index keyed to the entry numbers contained in the body of the book. Book Converso Non Conformism in Early Modern Spain

Download or read book Converso Non Conformism in Early Modern Spain written by Kevin Ingram and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.

This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the ways in which the 2008/2009 social and economic crisis in Southern Europe affected the interpretation of the transitional past in Spain, Greece and Portugal. Discussing topics such as public memory, Europeanism and uses of the past by grassroots movements, the volume showcases how the crisis challenged consolidated perceptions of the transitions as ‘success stories’. It revisits the dominant historical narratives around Southern European transitions to democracy more than forty years since the demise of authoritarian regimes, bringing together contributors from history, cultural studies, political science and sociology.

Book The Early Colombian Labor Movement

Download or read book The Early Colombian Labor Movement written by David Sowell and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Sowell traces the history of artisan labor organizations in Bogotá and examines long-term political activity of Colombian artisans in the century after independence. Relying on contemporary newspapers, political handouts, broadsides, and public petitions, Sowell analyzes the economic, social, and political history of the capital's artisan class, a middling social sector with very significant social and political strengths. This is the first study in English of nineteenth-century Latin American artisans and one of the few treatments that spans the whole of nineteenth-century Colombian history. The rise and late decline of artisan class political activity coincided the Colombia's integration into the world market. Initially petitioning for tariff protection, Bogotá's craftsmen in time mobilized to address numerous issues, including industrial education, internal trade order, credit, and better health and educational facilities. Sowell traces the transformation of Colombia's economy and the (mainly negative) effects its evolution had on bogotano artisans. By the end of the nineteenth century, the artisans class was fragmented, their labor leadership replaced by workers associated with industrial production, transportation systems, and the production of coffee. Author note: David Sowell is Assistant Professor of History at Juniata College.
