  • Author : Brian J. Huntley
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-02-20
  • ISBN : 3030030830
  • Pages : 549 pages

Download or read book Biodiversity of Angola written by Brian J. Huntley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.

Book Defining and Mainstreaming Environmental Sustainability in Water Resources Management in Southern Africa

Download or read book Defining and Mainstreaming Environmental Sustainability in Water Resources Management in Southern Africa written by Rafik Hirji and published by Sadc Environment and Land Management Sector. This book was released on 2002 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the result of a joint project of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the World Bank, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the World Conservation Union (Regional Office for Southern Africa) which investigated the threats to precious water resources in southern Africa, and to the environment that sustains them. The full colour, glossy report was intended as a SADC contribution to the United Nations summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, and to the New Partnership for Africa's Development. The report provides a framework for the sustainable management of water resources, and presents solutions for long-term protection and appropriate utilisation of water in the counties of the region ? the DRC, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa. Some key messages that pervade the report are: firstly that the effective and sustainable utilisation and management of water resources are essential prerequisites for sustaining all forms of life and livelihoods, and for fostering overall socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the region; and that moreover, sustainable water resources management must be balanced between the short-term needs of the people and their human development, and the protection of the natural resource base and environment.

Book The Development Dictionary

Download or read book The Development Dictionary written by Wolfgang Sachs and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic collection, some of the world's most eminent critics of development review the key concepts of the development discourse. Each essay examines one concept from a historical and anthropological point of view, highlights its particular bias, and exposes its historical obsolescence and intellectual sterility. The authors argue that a bidding farewell to the whole Eurocentric development idea is urgently needed, in order to liberate people’s minds in both North and South for bold responses to the environmental and ethical challenges now confronting humanity. The combined result forms a must-read invitation to experts, grassroots movements and students of development to recognize the tainted glasses they put on whenever they participate in the development discourse.

Book Religion and the Dramatisation of Life

Download or read book Religion and the Dramatisation of Life written by J. M. Schoffeleers and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2000 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Malawi in general, and the areas described in this book, are predominantly Christian, traditional religion is still an important reality, beside and within Christianity in Malawi. Matthew Schoffeleers, a Montfortian missionary priest and social anthropologist, addresses here aspects of African tradition religion, with a particular focus on spirit possesion. Both in its individual importance and in its territorial importance. Of the six papers collected in the book two deal with rain cults, which for centuries have played a central role in the political and religious life of Malawi, two with territorial spirit mediumship and two with cults of affliction.
