Book excerpt: El diseño de las cadenas de suministro es una de las actividades estratégicas más importantes dentro de las organizaciones dado que, en dicho diseño, se determina el funcionamiento general del sistema, la localización de sus instalaciones, la capacidad productiva, las políticas y el manejo de inventarios y los aspectos relacionados con el transporte. Este trabajo es una revisión bibliográfica de los conceptos generales que enmarcan el diseño de las cadenas de suministro y de los modelos de programación matemática recientes que se utilizan de apoyo en la toma de decisiones. El documento se compone fundamentalmente de: los conceptos de diseño de cadenas de suministro, modelos de programación matemática para el diseño y por último el análisis del estado del arte, conclusiones y las nuevas líneas de investigación. En la primera parte se presentan las definiciones de cadena de suministro y administración de la cadena de suministro, con sus respectivos niveles de decisión (operativo, táctico y estratégico), se explica en qué consiste el diseño como tal, las decisiones que deben tomarse en cuanto a sus objetivos, variables y restricciones, y las diferentes formas de clasificar los modelos matemáticos de diseño de cadenas de suministro. Posteriormente se exponen los antecedentes en modelos de programación matemática y se explican ocho de ellos de forma detallada, presentando sus variables, funciones objetivo, restricciones, resultados computacionales, si aplica, y se discuten sus características en común o las mejoras que presentan con relación a otros modelos. Se hace un análisis de los aspectos fundamentales encontrados en la literatura estudiada destacando dos de los modelos expuestos, dado que cumplen una serie de características que los hacen ser muy completos y muy pertinentes a la hora de diseñar cadenas de suministro. Se subrayan algunos factores que se utilizan en los modelos más recientes y que los trabajos posteriores deberían conservar, ya que aportan sustancialmente al diseño de cadenas de suministro y, por último se presentan posibles líneas para investigaciones futuras.
