How can each nation and each institution achieve the right balance between quality and quantity, access and equity, need-based and merit-based aid, government funding and private endowments? In these nine chapters, case studies discuss the different approaches being taken and the varying results produced. Book Social and Economic Vulnerability of Roma People

Download or read book Social and Economic Vulnerability of Roma People written by Maria Manuela Mendes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume provides an understanding of the different aspects of success, school continuity and social mobility among European Roma, including the motives justifying the high rates of school dropout and failure among this group. It offers a critical and reflexive perspective about social reality from a multidisciplinary and transversal point of view, sharing knowledge and practices in different countries about the articulations between Roma families, individuals, school and public policies. Over time, there has been an increase in the educational attainment of European citizens, but there are still persistent inequalities between Roma and non-Roma, including gender inequalities, which greatly affect Roma women. The volume explores the issue of Roma education and includes chapters from Western European, South and Central and Eastern European researchers using different theoretical and methodological perspectives. The intersection of this diversity and plurality of standpoints makes possible to obtain a comprehensive view on the education and schooling of European Roma.

Book The Distribution of Mexico s Public Spending on Education

Download or read book The Distribution of Mexico s Public Spending on Education written by Gladys Lopez Acevedo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public spending on tertiary education in Mexico is strongly regressive, benefiting mainly the nonpoor in urban areas. To give the poor a chance at higher education, student loan programs or means-tested financial aid and scholarship programs (though rarely devoid of subsidy) are preferable to free education services, because loan and aid programs target the students who suffer from the financial market's failure to provide long-term loans for higher education.

Book Handbook of Sustainability Science in the Future

Download or read book Handbook of Sustainability Science in the Future written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 1984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity will have to cope with many problems in the coming decades: for instance, the world population is likely grow to to 8,8 billion people by 2035. Also, changing climate conditions are negatively affecting the livelihoods of millions of people. In particular, environmental disasters are causing substantial damages to properties. From a social perspective, the inequalities between rich and poor nations are becoming even deeper, and in many countries, conflicts between national and international interest groups are intensifying. The above state of affairs suggest that a broader understanding of the trends which may lead to a more sustainable world is needed, especially those which may pave the way for future developments. In other words, we need to pave the way for sustainable futures.Consistent with this reality, the proposed Encyclopedia of Sustainability Futures aims to identify, document and disseminate ideas, experiences and visions from scientists, member of nongovernmental organisations, decision-makers industry representatives and citizens, on themes and issues which will be important in pursuing sustainable future scenarios. In particular, the publication will focus on scientific aspects, as well as on social and economic ones, also considering matters related to financing and infra-structures, which are important in pursuing a sustainable future. The Encyclopedia of Sustainability Futures will involve the contributing authors in line with theprinciple of co-generation, from across a wide range of disciplines, e.g. education and social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, the arts, languages etc, with papers adopting a long-term sustainability perspective, with a time horizon until 2050. The focus will be on themes which are felt as important in the future, and the chapters are expected to interest and motivate a world audience. This book is part of the "100 papers to accelerate the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals initiative"!

The focus is placed on the social and political achievements that feminism has attained since the transition to democracy in Spain. It outlines the radical changes of the image of women. Above all, however, this reader illustrates the extent of academic research on issues of gender, which has become increasingly differentiated over the last 30 years. This book is a tremendous example of the dramatic development of feminism and the new status of women in Spain. Book jacket.

  • Author : William Felstiner
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

Download or read book Reorganization and Resistance written by William Felstiner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Reorganization and Resistance' analyses the ways in which the legal professions of nine countries (England,France, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, the US, Mexico, Australia and Korea) and one continent (South America) have confronted the internal and external political, economic and social upheavals of the past twenty years. It documents how change and resistance are inextricably tied together in an oppositional tension where the greater weight shifts gradually from one to the other, even shifts backwards at times, but in the long view runs in the direction of change. The most obvious instance almost everywhere is the struggle of women in legal professions where improvement is undeniable even as resistance is varied and stiff. The book charts the way demographic shifts have changed the work of lawyers, the way that the revenue from law practice has been re-distributed, and the extent to which barriers based on race, class, religion and gender have shrunk or shifted. It describes how some professions have been forced by government or co-regulation with government to reorganize. It also documents how others have not kept pace with transformations in the economy and changes and challenges to legal education take center stage while demographic shifts and institutional reorganization are of much less importance.
