The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. Definitions of health-care settings are proposed in Appendix 1. These Guidelines and the associated WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and an Implementation Toolkit (http://www.who.int/gpsc/en/) are designed to offer health-care facilities in Member States a conceptual framework and practical tools for the application of recommendations in practice at the bedside. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. This extensive review includes in one document sufficient technical information to support training materials and help plan implementation strategies. The document comprises six parts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Essentials to Life and Health: A Practical, Primary Treatise on Hygiene The diaphragm, the organ of breathing and the leading muscle of the body, is attached to the inner lower border of the ribs and crowns up like a dome over the liver, stomach and spleen, with the heart resting down lightly on top of the dome and the lower border of the lungs slipping down on each side of the dome between it and the ribs. This appears partly in the right hung, is cut the left lung is cut away at the top of the dome so as not to obscure the location of the stomach, which is dotted in under the diaphragm on the left side of the body, being drawn away from the ribs to show the spleen (sp.). The liver is dotted in on the right side and the lower border lifted to show location of gall bladder. The colon is drawn down to show the kidneys. To appreciate diaphragm action, read pp. 45-47 and 162-166, studying the cut as you read. If the lower front border of the lungs were allowed to appear in their true position they would spread inward and downward, covering all but the central and lower portion of this dome of the diaphragm.
