Download or read book Forgotten Men written by Michael Tyquin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten Men is the long overdue account of the significant contribution to the Australian Army of the Australian Army Veterinary Corps in two world wars. One of the army's smallest and least recognised corps, its humble beginnings and quiet work in the background belie the crucial role of the Corps in supporting wartime operations and dealing with logistical issues never envisaged before 1915. While their place in military history is often overlooked, the men of the Australian Veterinary Corps deserve recognition. Stoic and hardworking, they unselfishly worked among the horrors of war, to provide the support needed for army units and their animals. While the Veterinary Corps reached its peak during the Great War, its role did not end when the guns fell silent in 1918. Instead, the Corps continued to support military activities across Australia until horsepower finally gave way to mechanisation in World War II. The Corps' success in enabling the 1st Australian Imperial Force to fight in two theatres, each with its own peculiar veterinary problems, is an achievement worth recording. Doctor Michael Tyquin is a consulting historian based in Canberra. He has published extensively in the areas of Australian social, medical and military history. He is a serving member of the Australian Army Reserve which he joined as a medical assistant with the 4/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse. He is the official historian of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland's Centre for Military and Veterans' Health.
Download or read book Glory Fame written by John Murray and published by Slattery Media Group. This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1970s, the Essendon Football Club was at its lowest ebb. The Bombers made just three finals appearances that decade - a huge shock to the system for a club accustomed to regular success. That all changed when Kevin Sheedy walked through the doors of Windy Hill in 1981. Glory and Fame: The Rise and Rise of The Essendon Football Club focuses on Essendon's resurgence from its lowest ebb to become a football superpower. In a series of essays, complemented by strong photography, some of Australia's leading football writers, including Rohan Connolly, Scott Gullan, Emma Quayle, Glenn McFarlane and John Harms, retrace the key moments in the Bombers' renaissance and look at the key people who helped transform the club - on and off the field. Glory and Fame: The Rise and Rise of The Essendon Football Club features in-depth interviews with Kevin Sheedy, James Hird, Tim Watson, Peter Jackson, Terry Daniher, Simon Madden, Michael Long and many others who have been pivotal to the Bombers' success over the past quarter of a century. Plus there is a comprehensive review of each of the Bombers' last four Grand Final triumphs (the drought-breaker of 1984, back-to-back success of 1985, the Baby Bombers of 1993, and the redemption of 2000). Glory and Fame: The Rise and Rise of The Essendon Football Club gives a wonderful insight into how to achieve sporting success and is essential reading for Essendon supporters and all sports fans.

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Book excerpt: Fifty-six Australian corvettes went to war in the 1940s. Thirty years later most had been scrapped, and the hulk that was once HMAS Castlemaine was also heading for the breaker's yard. Then in 1973 the Maritime Trust of Australia came to the rescue, and its volunteers took Castlemaine home to her birthplace of Williamstown, Victoria. Over decades they restored her wartime configuration, and today maintain the heritage-registered corvette. HMAS Castlemaine, still afloat, tells her story of conflict in the Pacific - and of the young men who confronted its dangers with courage, hard work and good humour.
Download or read book Lost Pipe Organs of Australia written by Geoffrey Cox and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been published to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the foundation of the Organ Historical Trust of Australia in 1977. It provides a pictorial record of pipe organs in Australia that have been lost through various agencies. Some have simply been removed and broken up, others have been destroyed by fire, and others have been rebuilt beyond visual or tonal recognition. This book is not intended to provide a comprehensive account of such instruments, but rather a selective representation of those for which suitable images have survived. Insofar as individual organs can be accurately dated, the images are arranged in chronological order. These have been sourced from public and private collections, and many are published here for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is brutally honest and bitingly funny discussion of politics and society in contemporary Australia. Using satire, insight and occasional foul language Clark pokes the swollen bellies of politics, economics, consumerism, media, food, oil, logging, water and transportation. This is an important work at a time when political critique has been eroded from the public discourse.
