Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two essays contained in this volume were originally published in Swedish under the titles of Det bestdende i kristendomen and Fšrsoningen en GudsgŠrning respectively. The first of them has been much used in Sweden as an introductory textbook for theological students. It outlines in nontechnical and more or less popular language the philosophy of religion underlying Nygren's theological work. Since none of Bishop Nygren's quite substantial philosophical writings is available in English, this essay can well serve as an introduction to his thought in that field for English readers. It furnishes something of the background against which Agape and Eros, for example, was written and can most profitably be read. It is also not irrelevant, despite the lapse of time since its original publication, to contemporary discussions of the meaning of religious language and ideas. The second essay elaborates a theme which in the first is claimed as a quite central concern of all religion and not least of Christianity. It also illustrates something of the theological implications of the idea of Agape, which is basic to the whole of Anders Nygren's theology.

Book The Grace of Christ Third Edition

Download or read book The Grace of Christ Third Edition written by Eric Roessing and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to communicate as clearly as possible Paul’s gospel of God in its depth, from what I have learned over five decades of studying Paul’s letters and theology. But, regardless of how much I have gained from teachers past and present, the bottom line is that “the things freely given us by God” in Paul’s gospel can only be known by the Spirit of God, through comparing Paul’s Spirit-taught words with Spirit-taught words (1 Cor 2:12–13). Luther’s grasp of how justification in Christ—and thus faith in Christ—is central, is verified by what Paul says in Rom 1:16–17; that in the gospel, God’s saving righteousness is revealed, from Christ’s faith to our faith. The message of this book can be summed up as follows: The life of the person in Christ is to be one of trust in Christ for righteousness before God, and, through that faith, obedience to Christ as Lord. This life is possible because Christ believers have died with Christ to the lordship of the Sin and the law, and are alive to God in Christ Jesus—owned by him as Lord, being one spirit with him.

Book Christianity after Christendom

Download or read book Christianity after Christendom written by Martin Koci and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What comes after the end of Christendom? Christianity has ceased to function as the dominant force in society and yet the Christian faith continues. How are we to understand Christianity in this 'after'? Bringing into conversation seven unorthodox or 'heretical' continental philosophers, including Jan Patocka, Jean-Luc Nancy, Gianni Vattimo and John D. Caputo, Martin Koci re-centres the debates around philosophy's so-called return to religion to address the current 'not-Christian, but not yet non-Christian' culture. In the modern context of increasing secularization and pluralization, Christianity after Christendom boldly proposes that Christians must embrace the demise of Christianity as a meta-narrative and see their faith as an existential mode of being-in-the-world. Whilst not denying the religion's history, this 'after' of Christianity emancipates the discourse from the socio-historical focus on Christendom and introduces new perspectives on Christianity as an embodied religious tradition, as a way of being, even as a faithfulness to the world. In dialogue with a broad range of philosophical movements, including deconstruction, phenomenology, hermeneutics and postmodern critiques of religion, this is a timely examination of the present and future of post-Christendom Christianity.

Download or read book I A Richards Routledge Revivals written by John Paul Russo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering critic, educator, and poet, I. A. Richards (1893-1979) helped the English-speaking world decide not only what to read but how to read it. Acknowledged "father" of New Criticism, he produced the most systematic body of critical writing in the English language since Coleridge. His method of close reading dominated the English-speaking classroom for half a century. John Paul Russo draws on close personal acquaintance with Richards as well as on unpublished materials, correspondence, and interviews, to write the first biography (originally published in 1989) of one of last century’s most influential and many-sided men of letters.

Book Nineteenth Century Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Nineteenth Century Philosophy of Religion written by Graham Oppy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century was a turbulent period in the history of the philosophical scrutiny of religion. Major scholars - such as Hegel, Fichte, Schelling, Newman, Caird and Royce - sought to construct systematic responses to the Enlightenment critiques of religion carried out by Spinoza and Hume. At the same time, new critiques of religion were launched by philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Nietzsche and by scholars engaged in textual criticism, such as Schleiermacher and Dilthey. Over the course of the century, the work of Marx, Freud, Darwin and Durkheim brought the revolutionary perspectives of political economy, psychoanalysis, evolutionary theory and anthropology to bear on both religion and its study. These challenges played a major role in the shaping of twentieth-century philosophical thought about religion. "Nineteenth-Century Philosophy of Religion" will be of interest to scholars and students of Philosophy and Religion, and will serve as an authoritative guide for all who are interested in the debates that took place in this seminal period in the history of philosophical thinking about religion.

Book excerpt: How does what happened 2000 years ago in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ radically alter the human nature and life situation of men and women in every generation up to the present day? Pursuit of this question provided the initial impetus for this book, a study of two vital themes pertaining to the doctrine of atonement - representation and substitution. The author explores their meaning and role within the theologies of three significantly diverse contemporary theologians - Dorothee Sölle, John Macquarrie, and Karl Barth - concluding with a comparative analysis of all three perspectives in relation to each other.

Book Archaeologies of the Future

Download or read book Archaeologies of the Future written by Fredric Jameson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age of globalization characterized by the dizzying technologies of the First World, and the social disintegration of the Third, is the concept of utopia still meaningful? Archaeologies of the Future, Jameson's most substantial work since Postmodernism, Or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, investigates the development of this form since Thomas More, and interrogates the functions of utopian thinking in a post-Communist age. The relationship between utopia and science fiction is explored through the representations of otherness . alien life and alien worlds . and a study of the works of Philip K. Dick, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, Brian Aldiss, Kim Stanley Robinson and more. Jameson's essential essays, including "The Desire Called Utopia," conclude with an examination of the opposing positions on utopia and an assessment of its political value today.
