They thus form, as a whole, an autobiographical commentary on the larger systematic writings for which they have gradually prepared the way. Running as they do through the changes of thre score years, they can lay no claim to logical consistency. I can only hope that beneath the varying complexion of their thought some intelligible moral continuity may be traced, leading in the end to a View of life more coherent and less defective than was presented at the beginning.
