Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foe of Compromise, and Other Essays The case for compromise was never put better, perhaps, than it was by moderate American statesmen after the great political compromise of 1850. That adjustment, they said, had saved the Union; and they pointed out to the defeated radicals that the noblest politics are but a compromise. The Union itself, they declared, is a compromise; so is the Constitution, and all social life, and the harmony of the entire universe. With sincere conviction and a genuine fervor they dilated on the blessings we had won by being reasonable. Had we not won peace itself? "With what instantaneous and mighty charm," cried Rufus Choate, their orator, the measures of compromise "calmed the madness and anxiety of the hour!" And not peace alone, but love. "How, in a moment, the interrupted and parted currents of fraternal feeling reunited!" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To receive the instruction of understanding, of justice, of judgment, and of all equity, (or righteous ness.) Herein divers parcels of instruction, mentioned in the former verse, are specified. First, These parables serve unto the renewing and lightening of the mind, which here is meant by understanding. Secondly, They teach justice, whereby is given to every one that which is his due. Thirdly, They teach also judgment, whereby the straight rule of God's word and his exact law is in every point and action observed. Finally, They teach all equity, whereby 'whatsoever things are true, whatsoever comely, whatsoever just, whatsoever holy, whatso ever acceptable, whatsoever of good report, of any praise or any virtue, are thought on, practised, and followed after, ' Phil. Book Twice told Proverbs and the Composition of the Book of Proverbs

Download or read book Twice told Proverbs and the Composition of the Book of Proverbs written by Daniel C. Snell and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Proverbs is permeated with patterns of repetition, yet to date no major work on Proverbs has dealt adequately with this phenomenon. Snell catalogs and analyzes repetitive words and verses and uses the data to draw conclusions about the composition of the book. He sees four stages in the composition of the book, with the earliest section dated no later than Hezekiah's reign. This book provides a wealth of information, including indexes of repetitive words and verses and an English translation of J. M. Grintz's major essay on the composition of Proverbs, which has previously been available only in Hebrew. The basic work done here will need to be considered in any future work on the Book of Proverbs and wisdom literature in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Proverbs When, however, such a gift is bestowed, it must, in order to its answering its end, be bestowed discreetly - not in any such way as is calculated to produce the impression Of selfishness, or vanity, or a mercenary spirit, on the part of him who receives it. It must, therefore, be a gift in se cret, not ostentatious not such as to bring credit to o selves, and attach meanness to the other party, - credit to us for generosity, - meanness to him for selfish cupidity. There may be cases, indeed, in which the offence has been public, and in which the gift may be a public acknowledg ment and public reparation. In such cases, publicity may be called for. But there must nothing be done that either implies on our part, or seems to impute on the other, aught that is hypocritical or dishonourable. All must be open and ingenuous, -all in simplicity and godly sincerity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary written by Crawford H. Toy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: The Book of Proverbs There are now before the public many Commentaries, written by British and American divines, of a popular or homiletical character. The Cambridge Bible for Schools, the Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students, The Speaker's Commentary, The Popular Commentary (Schaff), The Expositor's Bible, and other similar series, have their special place and importance. But they do not enter into the field of Critical Biblical scholarship occupied by such series of Commentaries as the Kurzgefasstes exegetisches Handbuch zum A. T.; De Wette's Kurzgefasstes exegetisches Handbuch zum N. T.; Meyer's Kritisch-exegetischer Kommentar; Keil and Delitzsch's Biblischer Commentar uber das A. T. Lange's Theologisch-homiletisches Bibelwerk; Nowack's Handkommentar zum A. T.; Holtzmann's Handkommentar zum N. T. Several of these have been translated, edited, and in some cases enlarged and adapted, for the English-speaking public; others are in the process of translation. But no corresponding series by British or American divines has hitherto been produced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Lectures on the Book of Proverbs Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Ralph Wardlaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Proverbs, Vol. 2 It is probable, therefore, that the intended antithesis re lates, not so much to the actual fact of truth saving and falsehood condemning, as to the dispositions and intentions of the faithful witness on the one hand, and the lying wit ness on the other. The faithful witness delights in giving testimony that will save life - that will be salutary and beneficial to his fellow-creatures. The lying witness will, in general, be found actuated by a malevolent and wicked pur pose, having pleasure in giving testimony that will go to condemn the object of his malice. The sentiment will thus be, that truth is most generally found in union with kind ness of heart, and falsehood with malevolence. And this is natural 3 the former being both' good, the latter both evil; falsehood more naturally akin to malice, and truth to love. A deceitful witness is evidently not intended to be under stood of a witness who deceives for the good of others. A man may occasionally deceive for such a purpose 3 but this is the exception, not the rule. The deceitful man de ceives for his own advantage - while the man of truth regards not the results, whether to others or to himself 3 but, be they painful or pleasant, considers only what fidelity and veracity demand of him: not things as he may wish them, but things as they are.* Verse 26. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence 3 and his children shall have a place of refuge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
