Book Critical Essays on Twin Peaks The Return

Download or read book Critical Essays on Twin Peaks The Return written by Antonio Sanna and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection offers an interdisciplinary study of Twin Peaks: The Return, the third season of a TV program that has attracted the attention (and appreciation) of spectators, fans, and critics for over two decades. The book takes readers into several distinct areas and addresses the different approaches and the range of topics invited by the multidimensionality of the subject itself: the philosophical, the artistic, the socio-cultural, and the personal. The eighteen chapters constituting the volume are academic in their approach to the subject and in their methodology, whether they apply a historical, psychoanalytical, film studies, or gender studies perspective to the text under examination. The variety and range of perspectives in these aforementioned chapters reflect the belief that a study of the full complexity of Twin Peaks: The Return, as well as a timely assessment of the critical importance of the program, requires both an interdisciplinary perspective and the fusion of different intellectual approaches across genres. The chapters demonstrate a collective awareness of the TV series as a fundamental milestone in contemporary culture.

Book From Subsistence to Exchange and Other Essays

Download or read book From Subsistence to Exchange and Other Essays written by Lord Peter Tamas Bauer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Bauer, a pioneer of development economics, is an incisive thinker whose work continues to influence fields from political science to history to anthropology. As Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen writes in the introduction to this book, "the originality, force, and extensive bearing of his writings have been quite astonishing." This collection of Bauer's essays reveals the full power and range of his thought as well as the central concern that underlies so much of his diverse work: the impact of people's conduct, their cultural institutions, and the policies of their governments on economic progress. The papers here cover pressing and controversial issues, including the process that transforms a subsistence economy into an exchange economy, the reputed correlation between poverty and population density, the alleged responsibility of the West for Third World poverty, the often counterproductive results of foreign aid, and the effects of egalitarian policies on individual freedoms. Bauer addresses these and other matters with clarity, verve, and wit, combining his deep understanding of economic theory and methodology with keen insights into human nature. The book is a penetrating account of how to develop a prosperous economy alongside a free and fair society and a stimulating introduction to the work of a man who has done so much to shape our modern understanding of developing economies and of the relationship of economics to the other social sciences. "This selection of essays will give readers a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich world of cognizance and analysis erected by one of the great architects of political economy. I feel privileged to be able to offer this letter of invitation."--From the introduction by Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate in economics

Download or read book Love s Return written by Gail M. Boldt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that teachers love children is often taken for granted in education. Rarely is the idea of love itself examined. Bringing together the work of educators, curriculum theorists and clinical psychoanalysts, and drawing upon autobiographical and narrative case studies, this groundbreaking collection examines the collision of love and learning, including the ways in which such intersections are provoked, repressed and denied. Contributors turn to psychoanalysis to explore questions of love in all of its varying permutations - ambivalence, sexuality, hatred, desire, projection, and loss - in order to demonstrate how the social ramifications of such work is critical to the ways teachers are currently being prepared for life in the classroom.

Book Essays on Being

  • Author : Charles H. Kahn
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

Download or read book Essays on Being written by Charles H. Kahn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a series of essays published by Charles Kahn over a period of forty years, in which he seeks to explicate the ancient Greek concept of Being. He addresses two distinct but intimately related problems, one linguistic and one historical and philosophical. The linguistic problem concerns the theory of the Greek verb einai, 'to be': how to replace the conventional but misleading distinction between copula and existential verb with a more adequate theoretical account. The philosophical problem is in principle quite distinct: to understand how the concept of Being became the central topic in Greek philosophy from Parmenides to Aristotle. But these two problems converge on what Kahn calls the veridical use of einai. In the earlier papers he takes that connection between the verb and the concept of truth to be the key to the central role of Being in Greek philosophy. In the later papers he interprets the veridical in terms of a more general semantic function of the verb, which comprises the notions of existence and instantiation as well as truth.

Download or read book Three Essays on Risk adjusted Customer Lifetime Value and Returns to Search written by Shweta Singh and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third essay deals with consumer search for information and measuring the returns to search. In the past, results regarding the gains to search have been unclear and measures of returns to search have either been subjective or limited to price reductions. In this essay, we provide a more comprehensive approach to measuring returns to search. We measure returns to search in terms of the ability of consumers in buying a better quality product. We use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to estimate our conceptual model of returns to search. Our findings indicate that Internet users and more experienced and educated consumers tend to make more efficient choices while consumer efficiency goes down with age.
