Book Short Papers on American Liberal Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Papers on American Liberal Education Classic Reprint written by Andrew Fleming West and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Papers on American Liberal Education The belief which underlies the several papers here collected is that the American College is the one thing in our higher education most worth maintaining. Its first business is to turn boys into men by teaching them the best things, whether hard or easy to learn, that they may do the best things, whether hard or easy to do - to show them that every difficulty surmounted by well-directed effort means more power to master the greater difficulties still ahead of them - to reveal and embody in them the living and eternal standards of thought and duty. Its constant foes are the self-seeking commercial spirit and the spirit of self-indulgence; its one friend is the better self in every man. Amid the ceaseless assaults of ignorance, selfishness, and weakness it stands as the citadel of our liberal knowledge. It cannot be taken from without, unless it is first surrendered from within. It cannot be surrendered from within to the forces of ignorance, selfishness, and weakness, so long as its defenders are enlightened, unselfish, and vigorous. Book Classical Scholarship and Classical Learning

Download or read book Classical Scholarship and Classical Learning written by John William Donaldson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Scholarship and Classical Learning: Considered With Especial Reference to Competitive Tests and University Teaching; A Practical Essay on Liberal Education Very few words will suffice by way of Preface to the following pages. Although this Essay is inconsiderable in extent, and intentionally written in a familiar and informal style, it contains the results of no slight experience and reflexion on the subjects of which it treats. Indeed, I have had many opportunities of discussing these matters before now, and I have often had to repeat in the present Treatise the thoughts, sometimes the very words, which I have used in fugitive publications or in public speeches and lectures. But the confidence, with which I bring forward this advocacy of the old basis of liberal education, does not spring merely from the maturity of my own convictions. I know also that most of those, who have paid adequate attention to the questions mooted by me, take the same view, either wholly or in part, and I have often, for obvious reasons, quoted passages from the writings of others, instead of endeavouring to enforce the same opinions by words of my own. One of my chief objects has been to correct prevalent, especially recent, exaggerations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book In Defense of a Liberal Education

Download or read book In Defense of a Liberal Education written by Fareed Zakaria and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CNN host and best-selling author Fareed Zakaria argues for a renewed commitment to the world’s most valuable educational tradition. The liberal arts are under attack. The governors of Florida, Texas, and North Carolina have all pledged that they will not spend taxpayer money subsidizing the liberal arts, and they seem to have an unlikely ally in President Obama. While at a General Electric plant in early 2014, Obama remarked, "I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree." These messages are hitting home: majors like English and history, once very popular and highly respected, are in steep decline. "I get it," writes Fareed Zakaria, recalling the atmosphere in India where he grew up, which was even more obsessed with getting a skills-based education. However, the CNN host and best-selling author explains why this widely held view is mistaken and shortsighted. Zakaria eloquently expounds on the virtues of a liberal arts education—how to write clearly, how to express yourself convincingly, and how to think analytically. He turns our leaders' vocational argument on its head. American routine manufacturing jobs continue to get automated or outsourced, and specific vocational knowledge is often outdated within a few years. Engineering is a great profession, but key value-added skills you will also need are creativity, lateral thinking, design, communication, storytelling, and, more than anything, the ability to continually learn and enjoy learning—precisely the gifts of a liberal education. Zakaria argues that technology is transforming education, opening up access to the best courses and classes in a vast variety of subjects for millions around the world. We are at the dawn of the greatest expansion of the idea of a liberal education in human history.
