Book The Economics of Information Systems and Software

Download or read book The Economics of Information Systems and Software written by Richard Veryard and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Information Systems and Software focuses on the economic aspects of information systems and software, including advertising, evaluation of information systems, and software maintenance. The book first elaborates on value and values, software business, and scientific information as an economic category. Discussions focus on information products and information services, special economic properties of information, culture and convergence, hardware and software products, materiality and consumption, technological progress, and software flexibility. The text then takes a look at advertising to finance software, perspectives on East-West relations in economics and information, and evaluation of information systems. Topics include research on information systems, knowledge on Eastern European information services, GDR information institutes, local databases, GDR databases, CMEA directions, and theoretical propositions. The manuscript reviews software reuse, software methodology in the harsh light of economics, quantitative aspects of software maintenance management, and calibrating a software cost-estimation model. Concerns cover the need for calibration, measuring maintainability, prognosis of maintenance effort, object-oriented programming, metaprogramming, and software quality and reuse. The text is a dependable reference for computer science experts and researchers wanting to explore further the economics of information systems and software.

Book Essays on the Economics of Information Systems

Download or read book Essays on the Economics of Information Systems written by Liangfei Qiu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology and social media have been a driving force in the economy and have transformed all aspects of business in recent decades. Understanding social networks is necessary to evaluate their impacts and examine key business issues involving information and technological innovations. The dissertation contains three chapters exploring those issues. In the first chapter, I propose an optimal procurement mechanism for mobile data offloading, covering both technological and business aspects. The unprecedented growth of cellular traffic driven by web surfing, video streaming, and cloud-based services is creating challenges for cellular service providers to fulfill the unmet demand. My present work contributes to the existing literature by developing an analytical model, which considers the unique challenge of integrating the longer range cellular resource and shorter range WiFi hotspots. In the second chapter, I examine the effect of a social network on prediction markets using a controlled laboratory experiment. In prediction markets, people place bets on events that they think are most likely to happen, thus revealing in a sense the nature of their private information. Through a randomized experiment, I show that when the cost of information acquisition is low, a social-network-embedded prediction market outperforms a non-networked prediction market. The third chapter studies different forms of social learning in the context of location-based networks: observational learning and the saliency effect. In recent years, the location-sensing mobile devices offer geographic location capabilities to share users' information about their locations with their friends. In our context, observational learning corresponds to the fact that "check-ins" made by friends help users learn the quality information of a venue; the saliency effect refers to that check-ins lead some of the uninformed consumers to discover a new venue.

Book Three Essays on the Economics of Information Systems

Download or read book Three Essays on the Economics of Information Systems written by Shu He (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid development of computing devices and the improved Internet access, our daily lives and business world have been dramatically reshaped. While technology allows companies to attain unprecedented efficiency gains, it also brings about fundamental changes to the competition environment. The goal of this dissertation is to improve our understanding of three major technological developments through the lens of applied economics, econometrics, and machine learning. The first chapter is on the mobile application (app) market. The mobile app market is a fast growing platform which offers consumers millions of applications for smartphones and tablets, but the astronomical number of apps creates a search and discovery problem. I propose an optimal matching for a new advertising strategy, “Cross Promotion (CP),” which allows app developers to locate valuable users while helps app users discover new apps. Distinct from the extant platform literature, which consists mostly of theoretical formulations of platforms, I develop a two-stage model using data from a random matching experiment to examine how users preferences are influenced by apps characteristics. I propose a matching scheme which significantly improves the effectiveness of the CP using the deferred acceptance algorithm. The second chapter is on the issue of cybersecurity. I propose a potential information disclosure policy to alleviate cybersecurity threats. With a large-scale randomized field experiment consisting of 7,919 organizations in the U.S., I show through a random forest-assisted heterogeneous treatment effect analysis that the combination of information notification and publicity significantly reduces large spammers outbound spam volume, which is an indicator of an organizations underlying security condition. The last chapter investigates social media platforms, which is on companies social media strategies under challenging situations. Through a theoretical model, the use of support vector machine, and an empirical analysis using a large Twitter data set, I show the existence of both a negative spillover and a customer encroachment effect after the airline industrys major product-harm crises. In addition, I show that non-focal companies appear to harness two distinct functions of social media–offensive and defensive marketing strategies–to alleviate the negative influence and exploit the unexpected benefit as a result of such incidents

Book The Economics of Information Technology

Download or read book The Economics of Information Technology written by Hal R. Varian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-23 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Information Technology is a concise and accessible review of some of the important economic factors affecting information technology industries. These industries are characterized by high fixed costs and low marginal costs of production, large switching costs for users, and strong network effects. These factors combine to produce some unique behavior. The book consists of two parts. In the first part, Professor Varian outlines the basic economics of these industries. In the second part, Professors Farrell and Shapiro describe the impact of these factors on competition policy. The clarity of the analysis and exposition makes this an ideal introduction for undergraduate and graduate students in economics, business strategy, law and related areas.

Book The Use of Smart Mobile Equipment for the Innovation in Organizational Coordination

Download or read book The Use of Smart Mobile Equipment for the Innovation in Organizational Coordination written by Namjae Cho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-04 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent increases in uncertainty and speed of market change are driving the adoption of new intelligent mobile office systems. Organizational information systems paradigm suggests that a right match between organizational characteristics and the use of technology is critical in producing desired results. Following such perspective this study focused on the relationship between task characteristics and the use of mobile office systems with an intention to find out factors that affect the adoption of modern mobile office systems. The research results show that in performing tasks with high mobility users tend to use extensive mobile office functions. When the task has a high level of interdependency with external business partners, users relied on specialized mobile functions such as FFA, SFA and ERP. Highly volatile environment with many unexpected task changes caused an extensive use of task specific functions that help to solve problems at hand. Further, analyses of the differences of mobile office use by department showed that sales department used more communication functions than others, while administrative departments rely more on such task specific functions as mobile CRM and KM than others. Additional case study shows how the application of new technology the effectiveness of organizational coordination. Based on the research the concept of convergent coordination is suggested as well as the direction for future research.
