Book The Voyage and Other English Essays From the Sketch Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Voyage and Other English Essays From the Sketch Book Classic Reprint written by Washington Irving and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Voyage, and Other English Essays From the Sketch Book This rambling propensity strengthened with my years. Books of voyages and travels became my passion, and in devouring their contents, I neglected the regular exercises of the school. How wistfully would I wander about the pier-heads in fine weather, and watch the parting ships, bound to distant climes - with what longing eyes would I gaze after their lessening sails, and waft myself in imagination to the ends of the earth! Further reading and thinking, though they brought this vague inclination into more reasonable bounds, only served to make it more decided. I visited various parts of my own country; and had I been merely a lover of fine scenery, I should have felt little desire to seek elsewhere its gratification: for on no country had the charms of nature been more prodigally lavished. Her mighty lakes, like oceans of liquid silver; her mountains, with their bright aerial tints; her valleys, teeming with wild fertility; her tremendous cataracts, thundering in their solitudes; her boundless plains, waving with spontaneous verdure; her broad deep rivers, rolling in solemn silence to the ocean; her trackless forests, where vegetation puts forth all its magnificence; her Skies, kindling with the magic of summer clouds and glorious sunshine, -no, never need an American look beyond his own country for the sublime and beautiful of natural scenery. Book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon Gent

Download or read book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon Gent written by Washington Irving and published by . This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. Published serially throughout 1819 and 1820, and was published in one volume in 1894 by Altemus' Bookbindery. The collection includes two of Washington's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym "Geoffrey Crayon," which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career.Apart from "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include "Roscoe", "The Broken Heart", "The Art of Book-making", "A Royal Poet", "The Spectre Bridegroom", "Westminster Abbey", "Little Britain", and "John Bull", His stories were highly influenced by German folktales[1] , with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musäus.Stories range from the maudlin (such as "The Wife" and "The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation.

The expressions, attitudes, and movements of the human body had always interested scientists as well as artists, but never before had thy been treated with such depth and conciseness. Book Essays on Art Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Art These essays were written in the autumn of 1914 as part of a series of talks on art appreciation. In committing them to writing, my purpose was to help the student to recognize and to live the principles of art and to apply them in his work according to his own discernment. I am happy to be able now, to give these short essays a wider field in the hope that they may help to foster the love of art and its significance in life. At no better time than this, could I express my appreciation of the encouragement given to me to write, by my friend, Leonard Van Noppen, whose wise counsel I gratefully acknowledge. Download or read book Ten Selections From the Sketch Book Classic Reprint written by Washington Irving and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Selections From the Sketch-Book Washington Irving, the eighth and youngest son of William and Sarah Irving, was born in a house on William Street, in New York City, April 3, 1783. His father was a descendant of an old Orkney family, and his mother was a native of Falmouth, England. Young Washington began his school days at the age of four. At the age of sixteen his school days were over, and he began the study of law. Though his education was of a rudimentary and incomplete character, consisting of a smattering of Latin, music, and the ordinary English branches, he gave early signs of a natural avidity for reading, and of a power of rapidly assimilating what he read. Sinbad, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver made a deep impression on his young mind. His early fondness for romance showed itself in many ways, and the theater in John Street possessed for him a seductive charm, to which he succumbed as often as he could steal away from home; for his father, of the stem ways and habits of the Scotch Covenanter, looked upon theaters with hearty disfavor. In 1802 he entered the law office of Josiah Ogden Hoffman, and, together with his "Blackstone," he read general literature voraciously. About this time his health began to fail, and he made frequent trips up the Hudson and the Mohawk, to Ogdensburg, Montreal, Albany, Schenectady, and Saratoga.
