Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a city based its planning decisions on the needs of an international bureaucracy rather than on the traditional needs of local residents and businesses, how would that city change? Alex G. Papadopoulos addresses this question with a detailed study of how the nineteenth-century quartiers of Leopold and Nord-Est in Brussels have been transformed materially and functionally since the European Communities decided to locate their administrative headquarters there in 1957. Drawing on game and rational-choice theories, spatial analysis, and urban morphology studies, Papadopoulos analyzes how the landscape of Brussels's center has evolved over the last three decades under the influence of successive coalitions of local and foreign elites. He describes how international real-estate developers form ephemeral, flexible, and specialized regimes of cooperation with governmental organizations at all levels and with special-interest lobbies to carry out major urban projects, while local neighborhood groups, conservationists, and political factions such as the Green Party oppose them with qualitatively similar regimes of resistance.

Book excerpt: This book uses the reflection of academics specialized in the urban area of Latin America, Europe and the United States, to initiate a comparative debate of the different dynamics in which Urbicidio expresses itself. The field or focal point of analysis that this publication approaches is the city, but under a new critical perspective of inverse methodology to that has been traditional used. It is about understanding the structural causes of self-destruction to finally thinking better and then going from pessimism to optimism. It is a deep look at the city from an unconventional entrance, because it is about knowing and analyzing what the city loses by the action deployed by own urbanites, both in the field of its production and in the field of its consumption. This suppose that the city does not have an ascending linear sequential evolution in its development but neither in each of its parts in the improvement process, showing the face that commonly not seen but others live. The category used for this purpose is that of Urbicidio or the death of the city, which contributes theoretically and methodologically to the knowledge of the city, as well as to the design of urban policies that neutralize it. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the book has an inclusive view of the authors. For this reason, gender parity, territorial representation and the presence of age groups have been sought.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What is whose?' As there develops increasing speculation, in our age, on the nature of 'globalisation', the prodigious flux of ideas, people, ideas, goods and fashions between Europe and the United States over the centuries invites nuanced approaches and a modicum of relativisation. Imports and exports, the endless back and forth movement of political, social, economic, cultural notions and institutions permanently raise the question of reciprocal influences and contributions. 'Facing realities' is both a fact and an indispensable activity. American institutions are indebted to European thought, American culture has to deal with European visions and the variety of the European heritage; American social and political circumstances keep informing and interfering with European choices and decisions. What notions, values and artefacts are indeed 'adopted' by one or the other continent turn out to be selected in the name of idiosyncratic cultural dispositions and thereby undergo subtle modifications. No cultural object or sign ever travels without being profoundly transformed. This volume examines nationhood, citizenship and culture, on both sides of the Atlantic, in the light of such complex exchanges. At a time when Europe is exploring its own political organization, it seeks to profit by the American experience; at a time when American culture is more and more forcefully asserting its presence in Europe, critical evaluations of its real pertinence grow more numerous. What superficially appears to be one-sided imposition turns out to be an intricate and complex dialogue. Resistance, caution, recalcitrance, defiance and rejection are as important for a definition of identity as enthusiastic sharings and the adoption of welcomed influences, however ambiguous and variously motivated. An analysis of misunderstandings is the surest way to mutual comprehension. Climb aboard the cultural shuttle.
