Book Large Scale Molecular Systems

Download or read book Large Scale Molecular Systems written by Werner Gans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This NATO Advanced Study Institute centered on large-scale molecular systems: Quantum mechanics, although providing a general framework for the description of matter, is not easily applicable to many concrete systems of interest; classical statistical methods, on the other hand, allow only a partial picture of the behaviour of large systems. The aim of the ASI was to present both aspects of the subject matter and to foster interaction between the scientists working in these important areas of theoretical physics and theoretical chemistry. The quantum-mechanical part was mostly based on the operator-algebraic formulation of quantum mechanics and comprised quantum statistics of infinite systems with special em phasis on macroscopic observables, equilibrium conditions, irreversibility on the one hand, symmetry breaking for molecules in the radiation field and macroscopic quantum phenomena in the theory of superconductivity (BCS-theory) on the other hand. In addition, phase-space methods for many-body systems were also presented. Statistical physics was the main topic in the other lectures of the School; much emphasis was put on the statistical features of macros copic ("large") systems, the lectures dealt with mass and energy transport im polymers, in gels and in microemulsions, with aggregation and growth phenomena, with relaxation in complex, correlated systems, with conduction and optical properties of polymers, and with the means of describing disordered systems, above all fractals and related hierarchical models.

Book Hydration Processes in Biology

Download or read book Hydration Processes in Biology written by Marie-Claire Bellissent-Funel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of water at organic surfaces or interfaces is of fundamental and technological interest and importance in chemistry, physics and biology. Progress towards an in-depth, molecular interpretation of the structure and dynamics of interfacial water needs a range of novel experimental and simulation techniques. We are now reaching the stage at which we understand, at the molecular level, the mutual perturbation at a macromolecule/water interface. The aims of this book are to provide with a comprehensive background to the properties of bulk water at the microscopic level and with a substantial account of the theoretical and experimental contributions which have been done to understand the role of water in various systems from some model systems to the more complex ones such as the biological systems.

  • Publisher : Wiley-VCH
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Disperse Systems written by Makoto Takeo and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makoto Takeo Disperse Systems Interesting applications for disperse systems exist in many areas of modern technology. Weight and cost savings achieved in engineered foams for complex designs and computer-modeled optical pigments for creating astounding effects in coatings are but two examples of such diverse applications. In addition to the cost and material reductions already achieved in existing applications, future applications of disperse systems are ripe with many heretofore-undeveloped products processing unprecedented properties. A thorough understanding of the relationship between microscopic composition and the measurable macroscopic behaviour of disperse systems is necessary for technologists to exploit the unique properties of these systems. With such an understanding, the reader will be equipped to develop new products efficiently and to effectively achieve required material properties. Professor Makoto Takeo, the renowned expert from Portland State University, addresses this need for an understanding of disperse systems in a remarkable new text. The current knowledge base is presented and the underlying principles of these systems are revealed in a straightforward and easily accessible manner. It is an indispensable work for those who want to competently enter this fascinating field, and an absolute must for tomorrow’s physicists and materials scientists.
