Specifically, I would like to mention Professor Cesare Kaneklin who, several years ago, first came up with this idea of a common, shared reflection on the quality of learning. I must also underline the contribution of my colleague, Michele Faldi, who coordinated all those involved in the process – teaching staff, tutors and outside bodies – and who helped me develop and implement this idea. Finally, recognition goes to all those individuals, both inside and outside the University who, with great dedication, have put their professional skills and experience at the service of this project. The path we have chosen is an innovative one; our research focuses on how the functions of a tutor may be fulfilled with an area characterized by the dearth of accepted norms, that of the “Specializing University Master”. There are many different types of Master. Each is related to a particular market and has its own specific teaching needs and organizational characteristics. Over the years, our University has met, and continues to meet, a considerable number of students through these Masters. What does the Università Cattolica transmit through these Masters? What methods and tools does it use to communicate? This has been the focus of our research, and is what we have attempted to present here. What emerges is that the University possesses what we might call a certain “House Style”, – a feature which, over time, has become a sort of claim. Specializing Masters are titles conferred by the University and have, therefore, their own type of organizational framework of learning paths. At a certain point, and within this framework, a new function, that of the tutor, came to light, which gradually took shape and grew in importance. It is seen as a function, rather than a profession, as it implies a much more interactive channel of communication than we might imagine. These new connections between the student and the organizational framework of the Master represent an interesting and worthwhile research area. It is satisfying to see the development of an idea which forms an integral part of our University, an aspect which our postgraduate students will have learnt, almost by osmosis. Book excerpt: While Umberto Eco's intellectual itinerary was marked by his early studies of post-Crocean aesthetics and his spectacular concentration on linguistics, information theory, structuralism, semiotics, cognitive science, and media studies, what constitutes the peculiarity of his critical and fiction writing is the tension between a typically medieval search for a code and the hermeneutic representative of deconstructive tendencies. This tension between cosmos and chaos, order and disorder, is reflected in the word chaosmos. In this brilliant assessment of the philosophical basis of Eco's critical and fictional writing, Cristina Farronato explores the other distinctive aspect of Eco's thought - the struggle for a composition of opposites, the outcome deriving from his ability to elicit similar contrasts from the past and re-play them in modern terms. Focusing principally on how Eco's scholarly background influenced his study of semiotics, Farronato analyzes The Name of the Rose in relation to William of Ockham's epistemology, C.S. Moving away from the usual modes of defining this period—a trajectory that begins with neorealism and ends with Bertolucci—author Carlo Testa offers proof that coming to terms with literary texts is an essential step toward understanding the motion pictures they influenced. The means of recreating literature for the screen has changed drastically over the last half-century, as has the impact of different national traditions on Italian cinema. Testa's work is the first to explicitly and deliberately link postwar Italian cinema to general intellectual concerns such as the relationship between literary authors and cinematic auteurs. To appreciate his contribution as an epistemological rhetorician, she proposes a multidisciplinary approach that draws upon a remarkably wide range of theorists, including Kierkegaard, Husserl, Heidegger, Peirce, Jakobson, Deleuze, Lacan, and Derrida. In Part One of this study, Locatelli traces the evolution of Beckett's writing, proposing that his principal concern devolves more and more upon the essential character of representation and its role in the constitution and signification of the subject. Part One also provides a history of this thematic, showing how Beckett's writing effects a radical displacement of representation from function to object of discourse. In Part Two, Locatelli focuses on Beckett's fiction after the Nobel Prize of 1969 , and on the epistemological and aesthetic issues in Company (1980), ill seen ill said (1981), and Worstward Ho (1983). She examines his "unwording" in this "Second Trilogy," and defines it as a process of subtraction that probes into the most basic mode of our being in the world. Here Beckett proposes, as Locatelli suggests , a very real hermeneutics of experience, beyond the "schools of suspicion" which are still influencing some postmodernist thinking. This volume will be of particular value to scholars and students of twentieth­-century English literature, French literature, and literary theory .

Book excerpt: Liquid Architecture challenges the idea of architecture as a fixed, inert container and reconceptualises it as a body whose boundaries are rather blurred and ever-changing. This book moves away from form as the primary driver of spatial protocols and explores what the built environment might look like when viewed through the lenses of a ‘wet ontology’ that is attentive to fluidity, flows and territorial dynamism. A reconfiguration of architectural materials and authorship is thus considered, leading, in turn, to an exploration of the ethical dimensions of co-designing with natural systems (of various viscosities) through liquid paradigms. The book examines a set of principles for practice-led discoveries that incorporate hybrid, mixed media with the author’s intersubjective relationship with liquid matter. Drawing from qualitative-based analytical investigation models, the text allows comprehension of the liquid phenomena via material contextualisation of an ever-becoming research setting. Through a practical and theoretical engagement with the ontology of liquids, the reader is exposed to a range of design-led experiments and creative propositions, visualisation systems, construction, and testing of physical models that collectively translate into a series of novel insights for architectural agendas. This book will be of interest to architecture and design research students and academics because it advocates the need for a more symbiotic and resilient approach to natural systems, which could benefit from the integration of regenerating material flows into our buildings and urban settlements.
