Book excerpt: Escaping Obstacles is a motivational story of the life of a boy to a man. Overcoming tremendous adversity that was set into motion by his family, trying so desperately to break the inevitable cycle of choices his family makes, with the intention of not giving up on becoming someone. Using his own experiences of a dysfunctional childhood, drug abuse, depression, and suicide attempts, Escaping Obstacles focuses on how one person can endure so much pain, and still have the motivation to become better than the odds he was dealt. Many people believe they are "the only ones with family issues." Escaping Obstacles will prove that you're not. Bart Hardwell was born in Monroe, LA in 1982, and moved to Houston, TX. In 2002 with his wife Oranda, his imagination was often his escape from his dysfunctional life. As he grew older writing became an outlet to help escape his obstacles.

In this book, Melissa Perri explains how laying the foundation for great product management can help companies solve real customer problems while achieving business goals. By understanding how to communicate and collaborate within a company structure, you can create a product culture that benefits both the business and the customer. You’ll learn product management principles that can be applied to any organization, big or small. In five parts, this book explores: Why organizations ship features rather than cultivate the value those features represent How to set up a product organization that scales How product strategy connects a company’s vision and economic outcomes back to the product activities How to identify and pursue the right opportunities for producing value through an iterative product framework How to build a culture focused on successful outcomes over outputs

Download or read book Escape Routes Contemporary Perspectives on Life After Punishment written by Stephen Farrall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escape Routes: Contemporary Perspectives on Life After Punishment addresses the reasons why people stop offending, and the processes by which they are rehabilitated or resettled back into the community. Engaging with, and building upon, renewed criminological interest in this area, Escape Routes nevertheless broadens and enlivens the current debate. First, its scope goes beyond a narrowly-defined notion of crime and includes, for example, essays on religious redemption, the lives of ex-war criminals, and the relationship between ethnicity and desistance from crime. Second, contributors to this volume draw upon a number of areas of contemporary research, including urban studies, philosophy, history, religious studies, and ethics, as well as criminology. Examining new theoretical work in the study of desistance and exploring the experiences of a number of groups whose experiences of life after punishment do not usually attract much attention, Escape Routes provides new insights about the processes associated with reform, resettlement and forgiveness. Intended to drive our understanding of life after punishment forward, its rich array of theoretical and substantive papers will be of considerable interest to criminologists, lawyers, and sociologists.

Download or read book Escaping Dystopia written by Stephen McBride and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple crises have led many to conclude that the current economic and political system is broken. The present and future look increasingly precarious – if not outright dystopian Stephen McBride calls for radical solutions to these crises to provide a more rational and sustainable future. He critiques other potential responses which would further curtail democracy and increase the inequalities associated with neoliberal globalism. Demonstrating how mainstream ideas, powerful interests and political institutions face major challenges but block progressive alternatives, he argues that for radical transformation to succeed, institutional changes are necessary.

John F. Moscato is a Canadian-born product designer and stylist who began his career as a freelance illustrator and designer for Janus Publications/Dream Pod 9 in the early 90s. While still a student at Dawson College, John was noticed by a talent scout for his unusual creative abilities and illustration skills. He made his first splash on the role-playing game scene as the mechanical designer and illustrator for the “Jovian Chronicles” sourcebook, as well as the RPG-turned- video-game series “Heavy Gear.” Unsatisfied by the limitations of an illustrator’s career path, John was driven to learn the art of patternmaking and product design, turning his and his client’s many product ideas into reality: a career path he pursues to this day.
Download or read book Escaping the Khmer Rouge written by Chileng Pa and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia for three years, eight months and twenty days. After overthrowing Lon Nol in April 1975 and establishing a so-called Democratic Kampuchea, the Communist-sponsored government was responsible for the deaths of as many as two million people, almost one-third of the country's population. Here, Chileng Pa vividly recalls life under the Cambodian Communists. Attempting to conceal his identity as a policeman for the previous government, Chileng changed his name and moved his family to the village of Prayap, near the Vietnamese border. In April of 1977, after two years of starvation and cruelty at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, Chileng was forced to watch as Communist guerillas brutally murdered his wife and two-year-old son. With nothing left for him in Prayap Chileng fled to Vietnam, but eventually returned to Cambodia as part of a Vietnamese invasion force that would end the bloody reign of the Khmer regime. In 1981 Chileng and his new family found their way to America. His "simple strand of remembrance" serves to honor all those who died at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
Download or read book Escape Plan written by Lynette Charity and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynette Charity’s grit, grief, and gratitude will have readers rooting for this timeless memoir about growing up in the early ‘60s South and overcoming all the odds against her to become a doctor in a time when the idea of a Black woman physician was practically unheard of. At nine years old, Lynette Charity looked on, frozen in place, as her father hit her mother so hard that she flipped over their front porch railing and fell into the hedges below. That night, young Lynette hatched a plan: she would escape this life, no matter what it took. And a month later, after watching the first episode of a new show called Ben Casey, she decided that becoming a doctor was her way out. At some point, Lynette noticed that all the real doctors and nurses who took care of her were Black and all the make-believe doctors and nurses on TV were white. Did it make a difference? Not to her. Over the next decade-plus, she focused on her studies. At a time when segregation was still alive and well in Virginia, she forged her mother’s signature on transfer papers so she could go to a better-resourced white school on the other side of town. Upon finishing high school, she got a full ride to Pittsburgh’s Chatham College. And after graduating Chatham with honors, she became a member of Tufts University School of Medicine's Class of 1978, one of seven Black women in her class. Raw, candid, and inspiring, Escape Plan is the remarkable story of how, through perseverance and single-minded determination, a Black girl from the 1960s South faced down adversity, exceeded everyone’s expectations, and fulfilled her dreams.
Download or read book The Obstacle Is the Way written by Ryan Holiday and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. Its many fans include a former governor and movie star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a hip hop icon (LL Cool J), an Irish tennis pro (James McGee), an NBC sportscaster (Michele Tafoya), and the coaches and players of winning teams like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, and University of Texas men’s basketball team. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck. If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era.
