Book Escaping from Bad Decisions

Download or read book Escaping from Bad Decisions written by Kazuhisa Takemura and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escaping from Bad Decisions presents a modern conceptual and mathematical framework of the decision-making process. By interpreting ordinal utility theory as normative analysis examined in view of rationality, it shows how decision-making under certainty, risk, and uncertainty can be better understood. It provides a critical examination of psychological models in multi-attribute decision-making, and evaluates the constitutive elements of "good" and "bad" decisions. Multi-attribute decision-making is analysed descriptively, based on the psychological model of decision-making and computer simulations of decision strategies. Finally, prescriptive examinations of multi-attribute decision-making are performed, supporting the argument that decision-making from a pluralistic perspective creates results that can help "escape" from bad decisions. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students and early career researchers in economics, decision-theory, behavioral economics, experimental economics, psychology, cognitive sciences, and decision neurosciences. Provides a comprehensive background to the phenomena of bad decisions, considered in their economic, psychological and cognitive aspects Reinterprets existing theories and phenomena and proposes a new overview of decision behaviors by integrating mathematical and psychological perspectives Adapts model-based techniques, such as mathematical model based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using mathematical models of the decision process

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have free will, and are answerable for our actions, but when our most important life decisions are based on childhood brainwashing, abuse, mis-information, and societal pressures, we are destined to make some poor decisions. Should we be forced to suffer for these poor decisions our entire life, or do we have the right to escape from those bad decisions, even if it causes distress for others. The author says yes, we do. We have a right to change the course of our lives such that we free ourselves to pursue the correct path that leads us to happiness and fulfillment. This is the theme of Escaping the Plantation. The plantation in this case being the marriage, corporation, government or religious group that demands we slave for them with little or no reward, and seeks to punish us if we refuse. Only by removing ourselves from the plantation can we ever hope to be truly free. And so that is what we must do. Escape. That is the theme of the five short stores contained herein. The first and last are true and are based on the authors personal experience. The other three are mostly fictional but are representative of the predicaments many of us find ourselves in. I'm sure you will enjoy all five and benefit from them. Steve Walker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful, breathtaking memoir about a young man's descent into madness, and how running saved his life. “Voluntary or involuntary?” asked the nurse who admitted J. M. Thompson to a San Francisco psychiatric hospital in January 2005. Following years of depression, ineffective medication, and therapy that went nowhere, Thompson feared he was falling into an inescapable darkness. He decided that death was his only exit route from the torture of his mind. After a suicide attempt, he spent weeks confined on the psych ward, feeling scared, alone, and trapped. One afternoon during an exercise break he experienced a sudden urge. “Run, I thought. Run before it’s too late and you’re stuck down there. Right now. Run. ” The impulse that starts with sprints across a hospital rooftop turns into all night runs in the mountains. Through motion and immersion in the beauty of nature, Thompson finds a way out of the hell of depression and drug addiction. Step by step, mile by mile, his body and mind heal. In this lyrical, vulnerable, and breathtaking memoir, J. M. Thompson, now a successful psychologist, retraces the path that led him from despair to wellness, detailing the chilling childhood trauma that caused his depression, and the unorthodox treatment that saved him. Running Is a Kind of Dreaming is a luminous literary testament to the universal human capacity to recover from our deepest wounds.
