Book Explanations Excuses and Exhortations

Download or read book Explanations Excuses and Exhortations written by Robert A. Amundrud and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before I became a truck driver, I never imagined the immensity of the job and the number of duties involved in being an over-the-road truck driver; in fact, many of the things a driver is expected to do and even required to do are unpaid tasks since a driver's pay comes mainly from miles driven plus extra pay for extra pickups or drops on individual loads and other guarantees for time lost due to no fault of the driver. To begin describing the experiences, the trials, and the tribulations of the driver or drivers of these monsters of the road which we variously know as semis, eighteen-wheelers, big rigs, or even tractor-trailers one might look at the events of an individual driver's experiences. A good starting point might be to remind ourselves that without these mechanical beasts of burden which roam our highways and byways every hour of the day and night, we would all lead quite meager lives, since everything we eat, wear, entertain ourselves with, and transport ourselves by is at some point or even many points along the line transported by a truck or trucks. You name it, and trucks delivered it... Explanations, Excuses, and Exhortations presents a non-fiction account of the author's experiences as a truck driver in which he handled various problems and serious mistakes while making deliveries to his customers over a nine-year period. He encountered numerous challenges and difficulties trying to get home for time-off or emergency situations. Join him on the road and experience the events and problems of some of his actual trips, including: problems locating customers, with law enforcement officials, with his companies, with his trucks, and with routes that were impassible for trucks. The situations he encountered were often mind-boggling and overcome only by strategically manipulating through a maze of unknown and seemingly hard to surmount obstacles and difficulties. Sometimes, he felt as if there were no solutions to the problems facing him, while at other times he felt like they would only be resolved through extreme effort to achieve the desired end. The side trips were the best, exciting and adventure-filled, during which they saw beautiful, often awesome sights, including trips to New York City and other top tourist attraction areas. His wife accompanied him on most of these trips, taking pictures to chronicle the amazing sights that they enjoyed!

Book excerpt: A new collection from the author of Or To Begin Again, a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award in Poetry Ann Lauterbach is one of America’s most innovative and provocative poets, acclaimed for her fierce, sensuous and intellectually charged poems. In this, her ninth book of poems, Lauterbach pursues longstanding inquiries into how language forms and informs our understanding of the relation between empirical observation and subjective response; worldly attachment and inwardness; the given and the chosen. The poems set out not so much to find cogent resolutions to these fluid dyads as to open them to the fact of unknowing that is at the core of all human curiosity and desire. A central prose section tracks along a meditative edge, engaging the risky task of opening the mind to the limits of apprehension; the final section evokes, in the figure of the instructor, the essential contemporary question of how information becomes knowledge.

Book Escaping Toward Freedom

Download or read book Escaping Toward Freedom written by Denise Turney and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2022 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escaping Toward Freedom is the fictional story of four teens who escape a human trafficking ring, each heralding from different states. Clarissa Maxwell, a key character in this thriller, is a former Navy specialist with friends in military special forces. Clarissa is vacationing in the Georgia countryside, deep in the woods, when she spots a girl hiding by her car, at the edge of her cabin. Sight of the girl trembling changes everything, strips Clarissa of the reason she'd traveled to the cabin. At once, Clarissa and the teen enter a world of intrigue, mystery, suspense and escape. Days later, more teen girls would show up. The foundation, the very core of this story, has dominated headline news and rightfully so. Escaping Toward Freedom is a powerful story that should be read and shared. Each reader can do something to make what happens in this story a past, memory, no longer a present-day trauma haunting millions of teens and adults and their grieving families. It's time to escape! It's time to truly go free!

Book Adapting Stephen King

Download or read book Adapting Stephen King written by Joseph Maddrey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen King's fiction has formed the basis of more motion picture adaptations than any other living author. His earliest short stories, collected in the Night Shift anthology, have been adapted into hit features including Creepshow, Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Maximum Overdrive, Graveyard Shift, Sometimes They Come Back, and The Mangler. Through his "Dollar Baby" program, King licensed several Night Shift stories to aspiring filmmakers for just one dollar each, resulting in numerous student film adaptations. This book critically examines and contextualizes adaptations of the Night Shift short stories, from big box office features to relatively unknown student films. It illuminates how each film is a uniquely and intricately collaborative endeavor, and charts the development of each adaptation from first option to final cut. Through old and new interviews with the creators, the work explores how filmmakers continue to reinvent, reimagine, remake and reboot King's stories.

The sheriff's department was quick to attribute the tragedy to a faulty accelerator, but crafty old Sheriff Bob, after fifty years on the police force, secretly suspected it was murder. As the one or ones responsible for the tragedy with the car scramble to avoid justice with the sheriff's department hot on the trail, the plot thunders to the dynamic conclusion where everyone has their final rendezvous with destiny to settle the score in this lurid tale of obsessive sexual desire, murder, greed, and betrayal in a small, rural Kentucky town one steamy-hot summer, set in a honky-tonk truck stop saloon situated along the Southern interstate.

Book The Drug Wars in America 1940 1973

Download or read book The Drug Wars in America 1940 1973 written by Kathleen J. Frydl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drug Wars in America, 1940–1973 argues that the US government has clung to its militant drug war, despite its obvious failures, because effective control of illicit traffic and consumption were never the critical factors motivating its adoption in the first place. Instead, Kathleen J. Frydl shows that the shift from regulating illicit drugs through taxes and tariffs to criminalizing the drug trade developed from, and was marked by, other dilemmas of governance in an age of vastly expanding state power. Most believe the 'drug war' was inaugurated by President Richard Nixon's declaration of a war on drugs in 1971, but in fact his announcement heralded changes that had taken place in the two decades prior. Frydl examines this critical interval of time between regulation and prohibition, demonstrating that the war on drugs advanced certain state agendas, such as policing inner cities or exercising power abroad.

In the folklore of World War II, the memory of those heroes who staged 'Great Escapes' from PoW camps still endures. But what of the other side of the coin: the audacious and daring breakouts of gangsters and villains today? The focus of Prison Break is one these 'Great Escapes' from civilian prisons, whether the escape is planned or opportunistic, aided from within by corrupt guards or facilitated by a violent gang of intruders. We travel with out subjects as they go over walls, tunnel out, or are lifted from the exercise yard into the skies. The exploits of such legendary Houdini type figures as the 18th Century rogue Jack Sheppard and the Canadian serial escaper Wayne Carlson are recounted alongside tales of breakouts from seemingly unassailable jails; Alcatraz, Northern Ireland's Maze prison, and the Bangkok Hilton.
