Book Error Based Evidence for the Phonology of Glides and Nasals in Polish with Reference to English

Download or read book Error Based Evidence for the Phonology of Glides and Nasals in Polish with Reference to English written by Hanna Dziczek-Karlikowska and published by Warsaw Studies in English Language and Literature. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the phonology of glides and nasals in Polish and English on the basis of spelling and pronunciation errors. The aim of this study is to show the relatedness between spelling and pronunciation errors and the phonological systems of both languages in Standard Generative Phonology and Optimality Theory. The rule-based phonology, where the intricacies of gliding and nasalization are resolved by the application of fully productive rules, gives a coherent analysis of the investigated data corpus. Similarly, the constraint-based phonology, where the solution is offered by the system of universal constraints, successfully accounts for the examined phenomena. However, for generalizations concerning the insertion of the back glide, Standard Optimality Theory does not provide conclusive results. This study proves that the introduction of a two-level evaluation, as envisaged by Derivational Optimality Theory, satisfactorily handles the ongoing changes.

Book Acquisition of Polish Nasal Vowel Syllables by Native English Speakers

Download or read book Acquisition of Polish Nasal Vowel Syllables by Native English Speakers written by Krystyna Sulima and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few generations of phonologists dealing with Polish have been struggling to find the true nature of the Polish nasal vowel. The strongest earlier claims postulated that Polish has no nasal vowels at all. The newer studies, however, suggest that phonemic nasal vowels are present in Polish phonology. Their behavior has been connected to their status in the syllable. Recently, data from second languages has been used to make conclusions about the phonology of native languages. This paper draws heavily on the works of Czaykowska-Higgins and Bethin with respect to the Polish nasal vowels and Osburne with respect to findings on the L1 throughout the L2. Nevertheless, this work is innovative since L2 Polish has not been studied at all, let alone in order to make conclusions about native Polish. The findings of this study, which compares the Polish of native speakers with the second language speech of native English speakers, confirm the phonemic status of the Polish nasal vowels in the native speech of Polish speakers. A new underlying structure of the Polish nasal vowel is postulated and, based on it, descriptions of the processes involving the Polish nasal vowels are provided. Furthermore, this study provides important insights from the perspective of the second language, and not only into Polish phonology. Most importantly, it allows us to draw conclusions with regard to the syllable structure in Universal Grammar. An unassociated X-position, called an empty slot, is postulated to be present underlyingly in the syllable structure in the mind of native Polish speakers, and perhaps speakers of other languages as well. The structure of this thesis is as follows. Chapter one is preliminary to the empirical study and presents a phonological analysis of the Polish nasal vowels and nasal consonants. This information is used in the discussion of the present state of knowledge of the Polish nasal vowels as established by consecutive phonological schools--Acquisition of Polish nasal vowel syllable by native English speakers 2 structuralism, standard generative phonology, and non-linear syllable-based phonology. The work of many authors who have suggested analyses of the Polish nasal vowels is considered. The presentation gives a comprehensive overview of all relevant issues before an attempt can be made to find the reasons for the differences in pronunciation of the nasal vowels by L1 and L2 Polish speakers; it is important to establish the phonological status of the nasal vowels before considering their pronunciation and representation by different groups of speakers. Chapter two contains the hypothesis followed by the actual empirical study. The tests, methods, and results are all presented. Based on the results of the study, a new analysis of the Polish nasal vowel is proposed involving a new underlying form, and this is applied to the explanation of the facts introduced in Chapter one. Chapter two concludes with a discussion of the results of the study. The importance of the study for both theoretical phonology and inter language phonology is considered.

Book The Phonology of Polish

Download or read book The Phonology of Polish written by Edmund Gussmann and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the most complete phonology of contemporary Polish ever published. It is topic-oriented and presents the fundamental characteristics and problems associated with each topic, among them syllable structure, vowel-zero alternations, palatalizations, and other vowel and consonant changes. Professor Gussmann re-examines assumptions about phonological contrasts and alternations, and raises and addresses central questions in morphophonology. He takes morphophonology to be systematically separate from phonology. Palatalizations, he shows, are crucial to Polish, as both phonological and morphophonological phenomena: their detailed description leads him to a systematic presentation of vocalic alternations. The book develops a Government Phonology account of Polish, but is primarily a description of the language with the model subordinated to the organization of data. All the many examples used to illustrate the presentation are transcribed in standard IPA, and translated. This important book will interest all scholars and advanced students of Polish and Slavic phonology.

Book Studies in Abstract Phonology

Download or read book Studies in Abstract Phonology written by Edmund Gussmann and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1980 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of abstractness is currently one of the central questions in the ongoing research into the theoretical foundations of modern phonology. Linguists are divided on the degree of abstractness admissible in phonological representation. While some would impose far-reaching restrictions on admissible abstractness, others have felt that such restrictions are unrealistic. This monograph offers extensive arguments for admitting a high degree of abstractness in phonology. The empirical material on which the monograph is based is the phonology of modern Polish. A substantial portion of the phonological rules of the language are studied and their theoretical implications are investigated in detail. Although there exists a rich literature on Polish phonology, very little of it has been written with clear theoretical issues in mind, and practically none of it is in English. The results obtained in the monograph, especially with regard to the vowel-zero alternations hold not only for Polish, but with some straightforward modifications can be shown to hold for all other Slavic languages as well. The book consists of four chapters. The first chapter examines critically and rejects the restrictions on abstractness in phonology that have been advanced by proponents of Natural Generative Phonology, in particular Hooper's &"true generalization condition.&" The second chapter considers the vowel-zero alternations in Polish and shows that the facts require an abstract analysis including the postulation of two abstract vowels that do not appear directly in phonetic forms of the language. The proposed vowel inventory is exploited in the third chapter which deals with one of the most complex problems of Polish phonology, the alternations of the nasal vowels. The proposed vowel inventory also plays a central role in the final chapter, which deals with the [o-u] alternations.

Book Crossing Phonetics Phonology Lines

Download or read book Crossing Phonetics Phonology Lines written by Eugeniusz Cyran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a significant and up-to-date contribution to the debate on the relation between phonetics and phonology, provided by researchers from different countries and representing diversified theoretical positions. The authors of the papers included in this collection analyze selected phenomena situated on the border between phonetics and phonology in various languages, such as English, Italian, Welsh, Polish, German, Southern Saami, Saraiki, and many others, in order to shed more light on the nature of the sound structure of human languages. It is the juxtaposition of different theoretical approaches, including Optimality Theory, Government Phonology, and Laboratory Phonology, coupled with their application to the analysis of specific language data, that makes this book particularly valuable and different from other current publications.

Book Between Phonology and Phonetics

Download or read book Between Phonology and Phonetics written by Eugeniusz Cyran and published by ISSN. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.
