Book excerpt: Previous research on the influence of sexuality on aggressive behavior presumes heterosexuality and gender identity corresponding with sex. This study seeks to distinguish the influence of gender identity and sexual preference on aggressive behavior. Three surveys were given (Multi-Gender Identity Questionnaire, Sexuality Questionnaire, and Aggression Questionnaire) to various participants. After calculating gender identity and sexuality values, each value was correlated with aggression values. Correlations corroborated previous research, indicating that men and women have similar levels of aggression, but express their aggression differently (men scored higher on physical aggression and verbal aggression, and women scored higher on anger and hostility). Two correlations were statistically significant: individuals who strongly identified as male reported higher levels of physical aggression, and individuals strongly attracted to the female body reported higher levels of physical aggression. Both correlations suggest similarities between the influence of gender identity and sexual preference on aggression, otherwise gender and identity and sexual preference were a marginal influence on aggression.

Frequently perpetrators of human aggression, when arrested and tried in court, resort to a psychiatric defense. But are all such aggressors indeed appropriately psychiatric patients? And if so, what are their particular diagnoses and how do these relate to aggression? Also of concern is aggression directed against self, as evidenced in the rising incidence of suicide among young people or the self-mutilation of patients suffering from certain personality disorders. Both violence directed outward and aggression toward oneself pose considerable challenges to clinical management, whether in the therapist's office or in the inpatient unit. Although we have not been able to find successful deterrents to aggression, a sizeable body of evidence does exist, certainly of a descriptive nature. Such data for psychiatric patients are scattered, however, and can be found in literatures as diverse as the biological, ethological, epidemiological, legal, philosophical, psychological, psychiatric, and crimi nological. Therefore, given the increased frequency with which mental health professionals encounter cases of violence in their day-to-day work, we believed it important that existing data be adduced in one comprehensive volume.

Book excerpt: Why is child sexual abuse committed primarily by men and male adolescents, unlike other forms of child abuse? Is child sex offending, rather than being a deviant masculine sexual practice, related to normative masculine practices, that is, practices structured on dynamic and changing relations of power? Using a practice-based sociological approach, the relationship between masculinities, sexualities and child sexual abuse is analysed and the power/powerlessness theory is developed to explain the predominantly male problem of child sex offending. The theory postulates that, because the social construction of masculinities involves the construction of dynamic and changing relations of power between men, men's lives are characterised by a combination of power and powerlessness. The book argues that an offender's experiences of powerlessness as a result of his relationships with other men is the key to understanding child sex offending, since sexuality is a key social practice for the alleviation of experiences of powerlessness and for establishing relations of power with other men. In particular, the theory argues that a man's particular attachment to the link between sexuality and experiences of masculinity and power will be a key factor for determining how he does sex and whom he chooses as a sexual partner. In the final chapter, the theory is tested through a re-analysis of offender interviews.
