Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eros and Anteros: Or, the Bachelor's Ward Certain fanciful, and unreal, visiters having intruded upon occasional hours of solitude, with a persistence which defies all efforts for relief, I have been constrained to give them form and permanence, and send them trooping forth, commissioned to invade other sanctuaries, to importune other minds. Engaged upon a wider field of action, they return no more; and peace may have been earned, unless, indeed, a "swarm more hungry" succeeds them. I can make no other apology for offering the public this crude result, of interludes of loneliness, and leisure. • Pages : 270 pages

Book excerpt: Anteros: A Forgotten Myth explores how the myth of Anteros disappears and reappears throughout the centuries, from classical Athens to the present day, and looks at how the myth challenges the work of Freud, Lacan, and Jung, among others. It examines the successive cultural experiences that formed and inform the myth and also how the myth sheds light on individual human experience and the psychoanalytic process. Topics of discussion include: Anteros in the Italian Renaissance, the French Enlightenment and English Modernism psychologizing Anteros: Freud, Lacan, Girard, and Jung three anterotic moments in a consulting room. This book presents an important argument at the boundaries of the disciplines of analytical psychology, psychoanalysis, art history, and mythology. It will therefore be essential reading for all analytical psychologists and psychoanalysts as well as art historians and those with an interest in the meeting of psychoanalytic thought and mythology.

Book Fran ois Duquesnoy and the Greek Ideal

Download or read book Fran ois Duquesnoy and the Greek Ideal written by Estelle Cecile Lingo and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in English devoted to Francois Duquesnoy, a central figure in seventeenth-century European sculpture, a rival to Bernini, and a leading light in an artistic milieu that included Poussin and Rubens. Estelle Lingo reconstructs Duquesnoy's pursuit in Rome of a modern artistic practice "in the Greek manner." Reconstruction of Duquesnoy's Greek ideal enables Lingo to offer new interpretations of his exquisite marble and bronze sculptures. Moreover, she demonstrates that the archeological and poetic vision of Greek art developed by Duquesnoy and his circle formed the basis of Johann Joachim Winclemann's influential Reflections on the Imitation of Greek Works in Painting and Sculpture - thus overturning the long-held assumption that no meaningful distinction was made between ancient Greek and Roman art prior to Winckelmann's work in the eighteenth century. Examining in detail how Duquesnoy developed and employed his "Greek manner," Lingo brings to light the extent of his contributions to European culture and aesthetics, and to the rise of Neoclassicism.
