Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Erasmus Le clerc, whilst he was concerned in publishing an Edition of the Works of Erasmus at Leyden, drew up his Life, in French, collected principally from his Letters, and inserted it in the Bibliotheque Choisie, and had the pleasure to find that it was favourably received by the Public. It is so performed, in the main, that I could not hope to do it in a better manner, and was not inclined to do it in another manner. It is therefore taken, as a ground-work to build upon, and is translated, not superstitiously and closely, but with much freedom, and with more attention to things than to words. I found his way of thinking and judging, for the most part, correspondent with mine; and I have seldom had occasion to declare a dissent from him. But at the same time continual additions are made, not only with relation to the history of those days, but to the life of Erasmus, especially where Le Clerc grew more remiss, either wearied with the task, or called off from these to other labours. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Whole Familiar Colloquies of Desiderius Erasmus, of Rotterdam In the Colloquy concerning Visiting of Holy Places, the super stitious and immoderate affection of some is restrained, who think it to be the chiefest piety to have visited Jerusalem; and thither do old bishops run over so great tracts of land and sea, leaving their charge, which they should rather have taken care of. Thither also do princes run, leaving their families and their dominions. Thither do husbands run, leaving their wives and children at home, whose manners and chastity it were necessary to have been guarded by them. Thither do young men and women run, with the hazard of their manners and integrity. And some go the second time, ay, do nothing else all their life-long; and in the meantime the pretence of religion is made the excuse for their superstition, inconstancy, folly, and rashness and he that deserts his family contrary to the doctrine of St. Paul bears away the bell for sanctimony, and thinks himself completely religious. Paul (1 Tim. V. 8) boldly says, But if any provide not for his own, and especially those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. And yet Paul in this place seems to speak of widows that neglect their children and grandchildren, and that under pretence of religion, while they give themselves up to the service of the church. What would he say of husbands who leave their tender children and young wives, and that in a poor condition, to take a journey to J eru salem? I will produce but one example out of many, and not so long ago but that the grandchildren are still living, whom the great damage they sustained does not suffer to forget what was done. Book Selections from Erasmus

Download or read book Selections from Erasmus written by Erasmus Erasmus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Erasmus: Principally From His Epistles The selections in this volume are taken mainly from the Letters of Erasmus. Latin was to him a living language; and the easy straightforwardness with which he addresses himself to what he has to say, whether in narrating the events of every-day life or in developing more serious themes, makes his works suitable reading for beginners. To the rapidity with which he in variably wrote is due a certain laxity, principally in the use of moods and tenses; and his spelling is that of the Renaissance. These matters I have brought to some extent into conformity with classical usage and in a few other ways also I have taken necessary liberties with the text. In the choice of passages I have been guided for the most part by a desire to illustrate through them English life at a period of exceptional interest in our history. There has never been wanting a succession of persons who concerned themselves to chronicle the deeds of kings and the fortunes of war; but history only becomes intelligible when we can place these exalted events in their right setting by understanding what men both small and great were doing and thinking in their private lives. To Erasmus we owe much intimate knowledge of the age in which he lived and of none of his contemporaries has he given us more vivid pictures than of the great Englishmen, Henry VIII. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Erasmus: With Historical Remarks on the State of Literature Between the Tenth and Sixteenth Centuries But, in addition to these spoils of Greece, the Romans possessed in a high degree of excellence, a science, which, though it conduces more than any to public and private happiness, had been totally disregarded by the Greeks. To them, Jurisprudence as a liberal pursuit, was unknown their legal instruments and forensic proceedings were drawn up by a description of persons in little estimation among them, called pragmatists, or practitioners; but the knowledge of the laws of their country was never followed by them, as an occupation conferring importance and cele brity. Among the Romans, jurisprudence was always highly esteemed; it was studied on the most liberal principles, professed by the most distinguished persons, and led to the highest honours of the state. Download or read book The Colloquies of Erasmus Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colloquies of Erasmus, Vol. 1 This is a modest and fair account of Bailey's work. The chief peculiarity of his version is its reproduction of the idiomatic and proverbial Latinisms, and generally of the classical phrases and allusions in which Erasmus abounds, in corresponding or analogous English forms. Bailey had acquired, perhaps from his lexicographical studies, a great command of homely and colloquial English; the words and phrases by which he frequently represents rather than construes Erasmus' text have perhaps in many instances not less piquancy than the original. Thus his translation, as a piece of racy English, has a certain independent value of its own, and may be read with interest even by those who are familiar with the original. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colloquies of Desiderius Erasmus, Vol. 3 of 3: Concerning Men, Manners and Things This Colloquy points out the different Kinds of Deaths in two private Persons, describing, as in a Picture, the extravagant Expence that those Persons are at, who put their Confidence in Fictions, more than those that trust in the Mercy of God. In the Person of George Balearicus, he takes Occasion to rally the foolish Ambition of rich Men, who extend their Luxury and Pride beyond even Death itself. That the Way to Death is harder than Death itself. That God would therefore have Death to be terrible to us, that we might not be ready to contemn Life. That Physicians don't use to be present where Persons are dying. Of the Orders of Monks, who play upon the Folly of rich Men for their own Gain, when it should be their Business especially to correct it. The Pompousness of the Venetians at Funerals, altho it be but that of a Cobler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Erasmus, His Life and Character, Vol. 2 of 2: As Shown in His Correspondence and Works The time, in truth, demanded one of a far different stamp - one cast in a more heroic mould - who should not merely command the intellect, but master the heart of the great German people, and hurling defiance at the old Popedom, lead them on to smash into frag ments that splendid fabric of power and glory which fifteen centuries had reared and perfected. It is not from the learned and the wise, as was said in the beginning, and as many an example since compels us to confess, that the help of hlimanity comes. It is not usually they who live in kings' houses and bask in the smiles of the great, who can grasp and wield with effect those fundamental ideas by which the world is moved. Out of the heart of the people the great movements. Of humanity come. And the leader for whom the world was now waiting must be of the people and from them.
