Cain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equilibrium Conditions in the System Carbon, Iron Oxide, and Hydrogen in Relation to the Ledebur Method for Determining Oxygen in Steel The principal results of these researches that concern the present investigation are (i) that reaction (4) takes place toward the right only at temperatures below (2) that the Speed of the reaction is greatly affected by temperature; for instance at 850° it is 66 times as fast as the reverse reaction (rhead and Wheeler loc. (3) that the reduced iron and unreduced oxide both catalyze the reverse reaction; (4) that the speed of the gas current through the apparatus or over the catalyzers is of great importance. Reaction (5) has been investigated by Giolitti 8 in connection with casehardening experiments. His book on casehardening gives many other references. This reaction proceeds rapidly above 810°c. This book was released on 2018-03-25 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Study of the Ledebur Method for Determining Oxygen in Iron and Steel Oxides with known or unknown formulae of the following ele ments may exist in steel: Class I, iron and manganese; class 2, silicon (silicates), aluminum, chromium, vanadium, and titanium; class 3, copper, nickel, and tungsten; class 4, phosphorus and sul phur; class 5, carbon. Class I consists of metals present in quan tity relatively large to that of the reducing agent (carbon). The corresponding oxides would, therefore, probably be present in steel. Oxides of metals in class 2 have very high heats of formation; hence are diicult to reduce by carbon except at temperatures higher than those usual in steel or iron furnaces, and are therefore prob ably present to some extent in the steels which contain these metals as essential ingredients. Oxides of metals in class 3 are, on the contrary, very readily reduced by carbon at temperatures prevail ing in steel furnaces, and are probably never present in steel. Oxides of class 4 are volatile or decomposed at steel-melting. Temperatures and are not to be expected in the metal. Class 5 contains the oxides of carbon. These have been reported by numerous investigators, and it is almost certain that carbon mon oxide, at least, is present. Ragone and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equilibrium values of total gaseous carbon (sum of mole fractions of CO, CO2, and CH4) are calculated as a function of total oxygen and total hydrogen in an inert gas for temperatures between 500° and 1500°F. These calculations show that hydrogen can counteract the tendency of oxygen to transport carbon from regions of high temperatures to regions of low temperatures.

Book Slag metal Equilibria in the System Iron chromium silicon carbon calcium magnesium aluminium oxygen

Download or read book Slag metal Equilibria in the System Iron chromium silicon carbon calcium magnesium aluminium oxygen written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equilibrium between carbon-saturated Fe-Cr-Si-C alloys and SiO2-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-CrOx-FeOy slags was studied under argon and carbon monoxide atmospheres at 1500 and 1600 degrees C. The equilibrium distribution of chromium, silicon, and iron between the slag and metal phases was determined for different compositions of both phases under different atmospheres and at different temperatures. The samples were equilibrated for approximately 11 hours, and then quenched to room temperature. The slag phases were then analysed for silica, lime, magnesia, alumina, total chromium, and total iron. The metal phases were analysed for iron, chromium, silicon, and carbon. The results of the investigation show that the transfer of silicon from the slag to the metal increases with increasing temperature, decreasing carbon content of the metal, increasing chromium-to-iron ratio of the metal, increasing silica content of the slag, and decreasing lime-to-alumina ratio of the slag. The results are presented graphically on quaternary diagrams as lines representing metals of constant silicon content in equilibrium with the slags. These are also lines of constant silica activity in the slag. Some activity calculations were carried out for experiments at 1600 degrees C in carbon monoxide atmospheres. It is also shown that an increasing iron-oxide content and slag basicity decrease the chromium content of the slag. Most of the chromium present in the slags under the highly reducing conditions of the test were found to be in the divalent state. These results are also shown as lines of constant chromium content in the slag on SiO2-CaO-MgO-25 per cent Al2O3 quaternary diagrams.
