Book Equatorial Spread F In Situ Measurements of Electron Density Temperature and Density Fluctuation Power Spectra

Download or read book Equatorial Spread F In Situ Measurements of Electron Density Temperature and Density Fluctuation Power Spectra written by E. P. Szuszczewicz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NRL pulsed plasma probe experiment was successfully flown on each of the two PLUMEX rockets during July 1979. The experiment provided direct measurements of absolute density N(e), temperature T(e) and density fluctuation power spectra with a maximum Nyquist frequency of 1 KHz (1 meter resolution at a 1 km/sec rocket velocity). In the first operation, a number of major depletions were distributed throughout the F-region, from its bottomside gradient centered near 260 km, through the F-peak, to a topside altitude of 500 km. The F-peak was at 375 km, with N(e)(Max) = 1/1,300,000 cc (+ or - 10%). The electron energy distribution was characterized by T(e) = 1350 (+ or - 250)K with no obvious signature of energy redistribution in and around the depletions. The most intense 'in situ' irregularities occurred on the bottomside ledge where gradient scale lengths were found to vary between 2 and 25 km. The power spectral density in this region of intense irregularities on the bottomside was dominated by a k( -2.5) power law over the intermediate wavelength domain k = 2pi/1 km to k = 2pi/2.5 m. This result supports the role of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability in generating intermediate wavelength irregularities during the occurrence of equatorial spread-F.

Book Nonlinear Equatorial Spread F Dependence on Altitude of the F Peak and Bottomside Background Electron Density Gradient Scale Length

Download or read book Nonlinear Equatorial Spread F Dependence on Altitude of the F Peak and Bottomside Background Electron Density Gradient Scale Length written by S. L. Ossakow and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four different two dimensional (perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field), plasma fluid-type, numerical simulations following the nonlinear evolution of the collisional Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the nighttime equatorial F region ionosphere have been performed. Realistic altitude dependent ion-neutral collision frequencies, recombination rates, and ambient electron density profiles were used. In three cases (ESF 0, 1, 3) the electron density profile was kept constant, with a minimum bottomside background electron density gradient scale length L about 10 km, but the altitude of the F peak was changed, with F peak altitudes at 340, 350, and 430 km. All cases resulted in bottomside growth of the instability (Spread F) with dramatically different time scales for development. Plasma density depletions were produced on the bottomside with rise velocities, produced by nonlinear polarization E x B forces, of 2.5, 12, and 160 m/sec, and percentage depletions of 16, 40, and 85, respectively. High altitude of the F peak, small bottomside electron density gradient scale lengths, and large percentage depletions yield large vertical bubble rise velocities, with the first two conditions favoring bottomside linear growth of the instability. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with rocket and satellite in situ measurements and radar backscatter measurements, including some of the recent results from the August 1977 coordinated ground based measurement campaign conducted by DNA at Kwajalein.

Book Model of Equatorial Scintillations from in Situ Measurements

Download or read book Model of Equatorial Scintillations from in Situ Measurements written by Sunanda Basu and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In situ measurements of F-region irregularity amplitude and ambient electron density made by the retarding potential analyzer (RPA) on OGO-6 near perigee altitude of 400 km have been utilized to derive the variation of electron density deviation over the equatorial region. Based on these measured electron density deviations and other assumed model parameters, including a three-dimensional power-law form of irregularity spectrum of index 4, a model of equatorial scintillations is developed in the framework of diffraction theory. The percentage occurrence contours of estimated equatorial scintillations greater than or equal to 4.5 dB at 140 MHz during 1900 to 2300 LMT for the period November to December 1969 and 1970 have been derived. The model is found to depict a pronounced longitude variation with the scintillation belt width and percentage occurrence being maximum over the African sector. The latitude extent of the spatial scintillation belt narrows over the American sector without much decrease in the scintillation occurrence whereas over the Indian and Far Eastern sectors both the extent and the occurrence are found to decrease. The percentage occurrence of scintillations estimated from this model is found to be consistent with VHF scintillation measurements at Ghana, Huancayo, and Calcutta. In addition, the model was found to be in qualitative agreement with GHz observations at various longitudes made by the COMSAT group. The effect of varying model parameters on scintillation estimates at VHF, UHF and GHz are discussed. Implications of the observed longitudinal variation of scintillations on current theories of equatorial irregularity formation are indicated. (Author)
