Book excerpt: Tenacious advocate for women's rights Abigail Scott Duniway offers her life story, describing the intense, decades-long struggle to attain voting rights for American women. Although the author recalls her own upbringing and ascendance to a position of leadership in the Women's Suffrage movement of the late 19th century, she is emphatically clear almost from the start that this nationwide goal was a team effort consisting of many talented people, male and female alike. Portraits and anecdotes of these figures, many of whom are now obscured by time, are present that readers may appreciate how rallying support behind votes for women was the combined work of many. Abigail describes having to doggedly persist against numerous stumbling blocks and personal difficulties; the notion of women voting was then a topic of great controversy, and she found herself shunned and sidelined for her campaigns. Although her state of residence, Oregon, had a generally progressive outlook and culture, it took many years of sustained protest and pressure to make votes for women a serious reform for consideration. Finally in 1912, Oregon approved an amendment for women's suffrage - Abigail Scott Duniway, by that time elderly, was present when Governor Oswald West signed the amendment into law.

Appreciated Assistance. THE following report is condensed, by permission, from the graduating thesis of Mr. A. T. Kronenberg, an alumnus of the University of Oregon of 1913, and is compiled from the National History of Woman Suffrage, Vols. III and IV, and from files of the "Morning Oregonian," selected from February 14, 1894, to November 17, 1912: "While the equal suffrage amendment of 1894 was pending, awaiting the electorate of the following June, our capable and conscientious United States Senator, the late Joseph N. Dolph, favored the Oregon State Equal Suffrage Association with an able and comprehensive letter for general publication, and in a speech before the U. S. Senate, commended the adoption of the amendment as a measure of justice and right. Leading clergymen, especially of Portland, preached in favor of woman suffrage, prominent among whom were Rev. T. L. Eliot, pastor of the First Unitarian Church; Chaplain R. S. Stubbs, of the Church of Sea and Land, and Rev. Frederick R. Marvin, of the First Congregational Society. Not one influential man made audible objection anywhere. "The state had been carefully districted and organized, neither labor nor money being spared in supplying 'Yes' tickets for all parties and all candidates and putting them everywhere in the hands of friends, for use at the polls. But no sooner had the polls been opened than it appeared that the campaign was one of great odds. Masked batteries appeared in the open in every precinct, and multitudes of men who are rarely seen at the polls except at a general election, crowded forth to strike down the manacled and voteless women. American Indians also faced discrimination at the polls and still do today. This book explores their fight for equal voting rights and carefully documents how non-Indian officials have tried to maintain dominance over Native peoples despite the rights they are guaranteed as American citizens. Laughlin McDonald has participated in numerous lawsuits brought on behalf of Native Americans in Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. This litigation challenged discriminatory election practices such as at-large elections, redistricting plans crafted to dilute voting strength, unfounded allegations of election fraud on reservations, burdensome identification and registration requirements, lack of language assistance, and noncompliance with the Voting Rights Act. McDonald devotes special attention to the VRA and its amendments, whose protections are central to realizing the goal of equal political participation. McDonald describes past and present-day discrimination against Indians, including land seizures, destruction of bison herds, attempts to eradicate Native language and culture, and efforts to remove and in some cases even exterminate tribes. Because of such treatment, he argues, Indians suffer a severely depressed socioeconomic status, voting is sharply polarized along racial lines, and tribes are isolated and lack meaningful interaction with non-Indians in communities bordering reservations. Far more than a record of litigation, American Indians and the Fight for Equal Voting Rights paints a broad picture of Indian political participation by incorporating expert reports, legislative histories, newspaper accounts, government archives, and hundreds of interviews with tribal members. This in-depth study of Indian voting rights recounts the extraordinary progress American Indians have made and looks toward a more just future.

Book excerpt: Dispelling the myth that women became involved in partisan politics only after they obtained the vote, this study uses contemporary newspaper sources to show that women were active in the party struggle long before 1920. Although their role was initially limited to attending rallies and hosting picnics, they gradually began to use their pens and voices to support party tickets. By the late 19th century, women spoke at party functions and organized all-female groups to help canvass neighborhoods and get out the vote. In the early suffrage states of the West, they voted in increasing numbers and even held a few offices. Women were particularly active, this book shows, in the minor reformist parties—Populist, Prohibitionist, Socialist, and Progressive—but eventually came to play a role in the major parties as well. Prominent suffrage leaders, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, entered the partisan arena in order to promote their cause. By the time the suffrage amendment was ratified, women were deeply involved in the mainstream political process.

It has made for a fuller, finer participa tion in public affairs, and by the intro duction of a distinctly independent ele ment into partisan politics, it has com pelled the adoption of progressive plat forms and the nomination of bettercandidates than the old way ever knew. If the reform were pinned down to a specific result, and discussion limited to one concrete outcome, equal suffrage could well afford to rest its case on the findings of the inter-parliamentary Union. This globe-circling organization of men and women, who play important parts in the public affairs of their va rious countries, is on record as declaring that Colorado has the sanest, the most humane, the most progressive, most scientific laws relating to the child to be found on any statute books in the world. And of these laws which drew such praise from impartial sociologists, -, not one but has come into operation since Colorado's adoption of equal suffrage in 1893; not one but owes either its incep tion or its success to the voting woman. Even in those cases where the law was not originated, not specifically cham pioned by them, they elected the official responsible for the law, and whose can didacy had its base in revolt and reform.
