Mainstreaming is a process which enables innovations and good practices to impact more widely on policy and practice. Mainstreaming is a challenging process. How can we ensure that innovative results developed and tested at project level are actually transferred to mainstream policy and practice? The guide presents information, tools and practical examples covering the entire mainstreaming process from the identification of policy needs to the development and implementation of mainstreaming plans. In April, a Learning Seminar on mainstreaming, using an earlier draft guide to inform discussions, was held in Dublin. EQUAL managing teams (Managing Authorities and National Support Structures) from both old and new Member States discussed strategies, compared different approches and worked out practical ideas and solutions through group work. It was very well received by the participants and the outcomes were used to inform the final version of the Guide. Although the guide has been designed to support the work of EQUAL Managing Authorities and their National Support Structures it will have relevance for other organisations with an interest in the transfer of innovations from other programmes or initiatives into the mainstream.

Making Gender Equality Happen argues that we should take this problem seriously. In this book Cavaghan uncovers the social processes that make gender appear irrelevant to so many policy makers using a new method, gender knowledge contestation analysis. Building on this new perspective Cavaghan identifies: barriers to effective gender mainstreaming; mechanisms of resistance to gender mainstreaming; and the steps towards positive change, which gender mainstreaming can yield, even when results stop short of ‘transformation’. These findings present fresh perspectives for policy makers and activists aiming to make gender equality happen. It uses multistage sampling in selecting Nigeria’s South-East, North-West and South-West geopolitical-zones and 1206 women of electoral age for the study survey conducted using structured questionnaire and in-depth interview.
