Book EPRU N Agriculture

Download or read book EPRU N Agriculture written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agricultural Sector's Development In spite of the country's semi-arid character, the Namibian agricultural sector, over centuries, sustained the rather small, but stable population of about 245,000 inhabitants before the arrival of the first colonialists in the form of missionaries and foreign hunters. [...] The establishment of the EMU may be seen as a belated reaction to the drought of the 1930s, when about 25 per cent of all subsistence farmers in the north of Namibia starved to death. [...] Government Action Plans The Government of Namibia has implemented and continues to implement a set of measures to counteract the effects of climate change and rising food prices on the national food security situation of the country. [...] The most important issue is the designation of Namibia as an NFIDC, since this will provide the country with more policy space in the implementation of the longer term measures to increase national food production within the limits of the climatic and soil conditions prevailing in Namibia. [...] The Government of Namibia has implemented and continues to implement a set of measures to counteract the effects of rising food prices, droughts and floods on the national food security situation of Namibia, such as establishing the EMU.

Book Agricultural transformation trends in farm size crop diversification and mechanization in Nicaragua and Peru

Download or read book Agricultural transformation trends in farm size crop diversification and mechanization in Nicaragua and Peru written by Srinivasan, S.V., Saborío, M., Morales Opazo, C. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural change is a process in which the amount of labour, capital and land dedicated to agriculture (and other sectors) changes over time. In this study, we focus on the cases of Peru and Nicaragua using their two most recently administered agricultural censuses. The agricultural censuses permit us to identify dimensions and information available to study the process of structural change in Latin America over the last 20 years. The study includes a comparative analysis and policy recommendations based on the two most recent agricultural censuses administered in Nicaragua (2001 and 2011) and Peru (1994 and 2012). Processing and analysing information from these censuses contribute to identifying dimensions and information available to study the process of structural change in Latin America over the last 20 years. Evidence-based policymaking is increasingly more at the core of the United Nations and member countries’ activity. In the case of FAO, this type of study is crucial to build the knowledge body on which projects and activities are carried forward. The Hand-in-Hand (HiH) initiative is a key example in this context, as it aims at quantitatively identifying high-impact and high-agricultural potential areas in which to invest within developing countries. As Nicaragua and Peru are HiH’s target countries, this study will show very useful to learn about their recent experiences in agricultural transformations.

Book The relations between climate change and child labour in agriculture

Download or read book The relations between climate change and child labour in agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change-related events undermine children’s educational attainment, exposing them to child labour, hazardous work and forced migration. This nexus is particularly relevant for agriculture and its subsectors: indeed, they absorb about 26 percent of the economic impacts of climate change-related disasters and host 70 percent of all child labour. This study aims to identify the extent to which climate change-related events and impacts affect child labour in agriculture by exploring the underlying connection between the two challenges as the initial step towards integrating a child labour lens within the international community’s work on climate change. It showcases the multi-dimensional relationship through a mixed-methods approach in four countries: Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Nepal and Peru. The qualitative and quantitative findings propose a set of policy implications that are in line with the concept that one-size-fits-all policy prescriptions are unlikely to work, as they must be tailored to different communities based on their characteristics.

Book Climate change Impacts and Household Resilience

Download or read book Climate change Impacts and Household Resilience written by Andersen, Lykke E. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This food policy report is a response to growing concerns about the impacts of climate change on Latin American economies, agriculture, and people. It assesses both local and global effects of changing agricultural yields on the economy, subnational regions, and different household types, including male- and female-headed households in Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. The three countries reflect economic and geographic diversity in Latin America and more than half of the region’s population. Climate change impacts tend to be relatively small at an economywide level in all three countries. However, sectoral and household-level economic impacts tend to be diverse across countries and subnational levels. They mainly depend on projected changes in agricultural yields, the share of agriculture in regional gross domestic product (GDP), crop-specific international trade balances, net food buyer/seller position, and income diversification of households. As for gender, results from this study suggest that female-headed households may be less vulnerable than male-headed households to the effects of climate change, highlighting the importance of considering women as a source for solutions for building resilience to climate change. Given the relatively small impacts of climate change and the degree of uncertainty associated with them, it is too early to define specific policy recommendations. All three countries should try to maximize the benefits that may come with higher agricultural world market prices and to minimize the losses from reductions in agricultural yields.

Book The agricultural sector as an alternative to illegal mining in Peru

Download or read book The agricultural sector as an alternative to illegal mining in Peru written by Piñeiro, Valeria and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold mining is the main economic activity in Madre de Dios, Peru. Despite efforts, the state has not yet managed to identify a formalization process achievable for small operators. In addition, many small-scale miners are driven by poverty and need income to provide for their basic needs. Because participation in small-scale mining is largely driven by poverty, it is likely that, in the longer term, much artisanal mining activity will disappear naturally if, through economic development, more attractive work options become available. This paper reviews the importance of illegal mining in Madre de Dios and the potential for development of the agriculture sector. It also analyzes three different policy scenarios: (1) government spending to rectify the environmental damage in the region caused by illegal mining, (2) development of the agricultural sector in the region, and (3) a final scenario with both environmental restoration and agricultural development. Results show that additional government spending in Madre de Dios does not significantly affect the rest of the country and that investment in agriculture can achieve structural change in the gross domestic product of Madre de Dios. Development of the agricultural sector also slightly increases household incomes in Madre de Dios.

Book Investing in rural households through community promoters

Download or read book Investing in rural households through community promoters written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study report was written as a part of the Agriculture Human Capital Investment Study, funded by FAO Investment Centre and with the support of the International Food Policy Research Institute and the CGIAR Research Programme on Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM) and the FAO Research and Extension Unit. Haku Wiñay/Noa Jayatai (“Let’s grow together” in the indigenous languages Quechua and Shipibo-Conibo, respectively) is one of the few government programs that work with poor rural households in a subsistence economy. Through the implementation of community projects composed mostly by training and technical assistance packages directed to improve production techniques as well as the household organization and financial inclusion, the programme seeks to contribute to the economic inclusion of poor households in rural areas improving their access to markets. Training packages are implemented by local promoters called Yachachiqs (“The one who knows and teaches”), selected and hired by the community for three years to implement community-based projects funded by the government office FONCODES. This study seeks to provide further knowledge about the programme major achievements and complement the literature that has been already developed about the impacts of the programme. For that purposes, structured interviews were performed with key informants, especially Yachachiqs, of the two poorest regions in Peru, Cajamarca and Huancavelica.

Book Labor Markets And Agricultural Production

Download or read book Labor Markets And Agricultural Production written by J D Van Der Ploeg and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1990-08-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the complex and often contradictory relationships between agricultural production and markets, the author examines the micro-macro linkages between farm production, farm labour issues and the degree of autonomy or dependancy vis-a-vis markets. By comparing the case of farmers in Peru, generally regarded as peripheral agricultural producers, with European farmers able easily to access the centralized markets of the EEC, Dr van der Ploeg is able to draw general conclusions about the ongoing process of commoditization of agriculture and the roles farmers play in agrarian development.
